The Sober Dude? An oxymoron? Or a feasible reality?
« on: July 12, 2014, 05:10:19 PM »
I am pretty fucking und-dude when I drink. EVen a little and I stop listening to my body which tells me its not a good idea( i.e. one drink = diarrhea, man!)
I also don't smoke weed.
Yet I consider myself a pretty serious Dudeist. And Lebowski-ist, AND Achiever( rabid movie fan, right?)

I love to drink, I'm just  a shit your pants agter one glass of wine and pogo around the house listening to CRaSS kindof drinker, it does not mellow me.
Before meals in my house, we say the Dude's Prayer over the vittles, and I stil havent come up with a good replacement for the line which reads 'give us this day our daily_____, i think I might put in MARMOT, since its a fun word to say, what do you think?
Anyone else here a Dude who just can't drink?
I am NOT an AA person, tried to be, cant hang with that. I just try to use my own regimen, and that given to us by such notables as Oliver Benjamin in "The Abide Guide" to make good, mellow-inducing choices in my moment to moment life and to not crash the plane into the god damned mountain. I am pretty Dude for the most part, hormones being an exception. It helps that I am indeed unemployed-sir, and will be for the rest of my lazy-ass days. Aw Hell, I'm rambling now. Lastly, Vagina.

My drinking problem is just the opposite....I can not drink.
I get shooting hot pains down my neck and I never get to a pleasant dude type of mellow drunk I can see everyone else is enjoying.
I like mellow in just about everything. A nice mellow dude buzz.
I pretty much go from sober to sick in just a few ounces. Luckily....for me...I learned to listen to my body and abide what it is trying tell me.
I do have problem with caffeine though.
I haven't had coffee for two days now after several days of d.t.s from being way over caffeinated...damn I needed to crash and get some sleep.
I'm sleeping sitting straight up the last few nights....about the only way I can breath without coughing.
Maybe tonight I will be able to sleep straight threw the night...if I could score weed...keeping a nice mellow would no be a problem.
Try and keep it all "Mellow" Hannadude.

We got a new puppy! We got her from a border collie breeder up the line from us!
I made a video of our Chelsea for Kevin the breeder.
Thought maybe you dudes would like it as well. who the fuck doesn't like puppies!?

I tend to overindulge when I drink, although not to an extreme degree.  I can't bring myself to fully give up drinking though since I especially enjoy a good Oat Soda.  As a compromise, I usually avoid hard liquor now for the most point.  I also only get about a 6 pack of good Oat Soda about once a month or so, so I don't get myself in to much trouble.  When I do drink my wife jokingly calls me a Chatty Cathy.  I am not well versed in the ways of brevity, but it is especially apparent when I drink (especially more than a few).   I am also an on again off again Artist and often plan to make great art while I am intoxicated often but usually end up only listen to music, making playlists, and pondering!  Hahaha!
Take 'er easy, Dudes!

And Welcome you are dude! 8)

Take er easy dude....try to abide the best you are able....and please...don't be a dick.

I think that pretty much wraps Dudeism up in just that little philosophy. I mean I look at what the 3 say and I can feel the karma radiating from it.

Just like my opinion dudes but to me that is the basic Taoism that Dudeism embarrass's.
Not sure if we can call it a religion, but it's far and away the simplest and perfect philosophy for living a happy and joyful life I can think of.

Abide dudes.....Abide.

I can drink the occasional beer but liquor is out.
I am certain that alcohol is responsible for more bad shit than any other drug to ever exist.
Hard liquor makes it impossible to moderate not just in drinking but in behavior as well.

Weed? No bad has come of weed unless you count wasted hours and bad dietary habits.
It's a shame it's illegal. It's completely arbitrary when you look at what is legal.
Right now the US is going through a near crisis increase in use of drugs like Heroin. Which can be directly linked to the abuse of prescription pain killers. (Oxy).
Yet these idiots in politics will continue to simply pull it out of their asses that there is some link to weed, despite the fact that the users themselves say that they got hooked on Oxy and moved to Heroin because it's cheaper.

Weed was made illegal when hemp competed with the new Dow Chemical patent for making paper.  You can thank William Randolf Hurst for heading the drive to ban it, he even came up with a lot of the wild accusations to print in his papers to convince people it was bad stuff.

Oh, and he had a lot of money invested in Dow.

I'm putting myself on a sober regimen for the time being. I have dabbled in AA before but it's not exactly for me. It has good points but is a little too reactionary in practice.
I tend to overindulge which interferes with my taking it easy over time. Keeping my health, finances and relationships on track is much more important to my inner peace.
Dude's blessings.

AS it happens I will not be adhering.
It's been a bullshit week for sure.
And I will at the very least be sitting around the campfire Friday and Saturday nights imbibing mass cerveza.
It's a long shot but I mayyyyyyyy make the trip to New Hampshire to see Blackberry Smoke open for Lynyrd Skynyrd.
If that happens I'll be sober for the long ride.
Probably the fire and the radio. It's tough to get away like that now with kids and what have you to deal with.

I've never been a big drinker myself, just never really acquired a taste for it.  Occasionally, sure, I'll have a Caucasian or a beer, but more often than not I'm a "one and done" dude; if the first one tasted good enough I might have a second, but that's rare.

And I'm not much for drugs either--a little weed every great once-in-a-while is more than enough for me.  Three or four years ago I got my "medical marijuana" card because of chronic back pain (long story), and I smoked so little of what I bought on my first visit to the local dispensary that I still have about 3/4 of it left.  It worked--sort of--but I stopped using it regularly because it only works while you're feeling the effects, and walking around half-baked all day and having to fire it up every three hours isn't a practical solution for me.  Besides, getting high alone is a bummer, man.

That being said, if someone likes to indulge in a little booze or weed or whatever and can do it without it causing problems in their life that's cool, but in my opinion it's not mandatory for Dudes to do so.  Sobriety is definitely a feasible reality.

Because of health reasons I stay away from hard liquor now. I'll have a oat soda every now and then.

I guess I'll start by saying there is nothing wrong about being a sober Dude. Dude is a state of mind that can be with or without intoxicants.

I'm a beer drinker myself. Never cared for smoke, but hey, if you wanna do a J, I don't mind.
At least I'm housebroken.

I have a tendency to over-indulge as well with hard liqour. Not a beer guy.

That said, I enjoy the drink too much to give it up, but i've been cutting down as of late.

I realize this thread is old as fuck, but just throwing my two cents in. I also am a clean and sober Dudeist. I find it annoying when TBL is categorized as a stoner comedy. I don't think it fits that bill, because weed isn't core to the plot, nor do I think it is essential to who the Dude is as a person. You could remove all marijuana references from the movie and the story would still work.
