I REALLY hate locked down systems
« on: December 30, 2013, 06:58:22 PM »
For a customer's project I have an iPad (we're an Apple MFi developer since Apple people will pay outrageous sums of money for just about anything).  It hasn't been powered up for a while since I only touch Apple when I'm on the clock.

I'm going to need it shortly for some more testing but of course the battery is dead.  Plugged it in and went to the store.

Get back, it's insisting on calling home (Apple), won't boot beyond that.  &^%$#@!

I find the old laptop I'd put iTunes on with a throw-away e-mail address (everything to it bounces unless I unlock it) and iTunes doesn't remember my login anymore.  *&^$#@!

I go to Apple to reset my password/account and it doesn't like any of the passwords my software is generating (things like hEt8%XE/bykbt ) as not being strong enough.  WTF?!?!  What does a 7 year old use for a password?  After several attempts I find one it likes.

iTunes now gives an "unknown error" and suggests updating iTunes.   First attempt at updating didn't work, it's downloading everything again.  &*^%$#@!

I used to like Apple, then they came out with the Mac and lost me.

I have GOT to charge more $ to people for designing Apple crap.

Update:  After trying all the online fixes, I called Apple support since this thing isn't very old.  Still under warranty, good.  Had me try everything again.  Still didn't work.  I now get to take it into an Apple store at 7:10pm, I'll try to be cool and not demand my rug back.

See I don't touch Apple.

And the Apple users at work are the most demanding annoying and up their own asses of all the end users.

But then I don't suffer idiots gladly (so have a lot of trouble with certain individuals at work anyway).

Too many people suffering from delusions of their own competency.

Steve Job's only genius was taking what you already had, making it more shiny (and less accessible) then charging you twice as much to use it.

All IMHDO of course.

I was at a trade show and some vendor was trying to push Apple on me.  He said "You know Microsoft didn't invent the GUI, right?" I said "True, Xerox invented it and then Apple stole it."

Really sour look from that guy.

Thank you! I had an Apple friend tell me I was absolutely 100% wrong when I said that.

Xerox PARC (Palo Alto Research Center). I understand the mouse only had one button because the person writing the technical documentation couldn't figure out how to describe more than one button.

Apple (Jobs) did nothing but steal an idea and an actual functioning GUI System from Zerox PARC and claim it was his...

Ok, Apple applied polish and glitter.  That's only partial credit and does NOT let them claim to have invented the GUI.  Things are changed over time, in computers glitz and flash are added constantly, much more than application usefulness.

I almost got into an argument with one of my brothers girlfriends because I suggested Mac's got viruses. Whilst she was busy arguing they don't my sister googled the subject and came up with the site where they Apple finally admitted they do get viruses, almost.

I guess as we're a religion based on a fictitious movie character we can't really say much about a religion based on a fictitious (to the public) character named Jobs.

I always tell anyone who asks that choosing a Mac over a PC or an iPhone/iPad over any generic Android phone/tablet that it's pretty much the same as recommending a luxury car over a standard domestic/import.

Are the luxury cars nicer, as in nicer engines and interiors? Yes, same as Apple.
Do all cars get you from Point A to Point B? Yes, same as all laptops, phones, tablets, etc.

Do some people want to pay more to show off? Yes.
Do some people want to pay more not to show off, but because they prefer more refined products? Yes.

Can someone spend tens of thousands of dollars for a luxury car just to drive to the supermarket and mall? Yes.
Can someone spend thousands of dollars on a Macbook just to browse Facebook and YouTube? Yes.
Can someone start a great business with limited resources out of the back of a Hyundai, or drive across the country to a start a new life and career with a used sedan? Yes.
Can someone with a groundbreaking idea and limited funds change the world with a cheap laptop and FOSS software? Yes.

At the end of the day, it's all the same shit.

Jobs was a genius marketer who repackaged other inventions, and was apparently quite an asshole to work for.  His co workers would dread being in the same elevator as him.

I'm sure there's a couple geeks here who remember this... Being a Unix guy, I found it quite entertaining.  Edited for brevity...

DOS Airlines
Everybody pushes the airplane until it glides, then they jump on and let the plane coast until it hits the ground again, then they push again jump on again, and so on.

Mac Airlines
All the stewards, stewardesses, captains, baggage handlers, and ticket agents look the same, act the same, and talk the same. Every time you ask questions about details, you are told you don't need to know, don't want to know, and would you please return to your seat and watch the movie.

Unix Airlines
Each passenger brings a piece of the airplane and a box of tools to the airport. They gather on the tarmac, arguing constantly about what kind of plane they want to build and how to put it together. Eventually, they build several different aircraft, but give them all the same name. Some passengers actually reach their destinations.

Windows Airlines
The terminal is pretty and colorful, with friendly stewards, easy baggage check and boarding, and a smooth take-off.  After about 10 minutes in the air, the plane explodes with no warning whatsoever.
