Dzogchen for Dudeists
« on: March 22, 2013, 07:25:16 PM »
Dudes,

And a good day to all of you!  I've been limbering my mind with a little Tibetan Buddhism in recent months, and I came across the practice of Dzogchen.  Now, many learned men have disputed this, but Dzogchen is one of the more direct routes toward abiding in the true nature of one's mind (i.e., knowing the limber mind for what it is).  Imagine the joy in my dudeist heart when I came across the following description from a Tibetan Lama (say what you will, at least it's an ethos).  I've made some notes in brackets.

The everyday practice of dzogchen is simply to develop a complete carefree acceptance, an openness to all situations without limit. [Far out, man, you mean a limber mind?]

We should realize openness as the playground of our emotions and relate to people without artificiality, manipulation or strategy. [By which he means, I assume, just abide.]

[Okay, here's where shit gets real]:

We should experience everything totally, never withdrawing into ourselves as a marmot hides in its hole.  [A marmot?  Are you fucking kidding me??!] This practice releases tremendous energy which is usually constricted by the process of maintaining fixed reference points.  Referentiality is the process by which we retreat from the direct experience of everyday life. [Reference points??  Seems that the ole lama is saying it's best to eschew funny schtuff, just approach life like a child who's wandered into a movie...]

I didn't make this shit up, dudes.  Take a look for yourself (so you don't feel like I gypped you).  I can't post the link here, but if you search for Dzogchen Practice in Everyday Life by Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche you'll find it.

It's all the same shit, man!  Never changes.  Take er easy.  I know you will.

The clouds above us come together and disperse;
The breeze in the courtyard departs and returns.
Life is like that, so why not relax?
Who can keep us from celebrating?
