  • Hey careful man there's a beverage here!
Last night an old buddy of mine called me up. He said he was in the neighborhood, so he would stop by for a few oat sodas. We met back in carpenter's school and have been friends for over ten years now. Most of the relationship has been smooth sailing and easy, never any angry words between us, until a couple years ago when he began having little outbursts over really small stuff. One falling out was over something really trivial, but it did create a gap in the friendship that took time to close.

Anyway, he stopped by last night for some beers, and we played cards and laughed and yelled about the shitty hands dealt just like old times. After a while we got into a conversation about the "Right to Work" issue going on in Michigan. While I know we have different views on Unions, I figured we could have an adult discussion about the ins and outs of it all. After all it's interesting if you're a worker being affected. While I was merely making a point about an individual experience with the union, and how they didn't help a coworker of mine, I could quickly see him getting all wound up. Then, as my lady friend was sharing her point he kept trying to talk over her and was being very Un-Dude. So she stood up for herself and said- "Wait, let me finish". This prompted a real reactionary-type reaction from  him where he began shouting his points as he stormed up the stairs. It was like a kid having a temper tantrum because you just told him Santa Claus isn't real. At first I thought he was just going upstairs to use the john, but then  heard the door slam- He left! My lady friend and I looked at each other and said, "Wow. What the hell is wrong with this guy man?" It wasn't even like we were having some heated debate- then I might understand how someone might storm out, but this was overreacting in kind of an unstable way. In the past I might have attempted to call him out and heighten the argument, but I just sat there with my Miller in hand and said fuck it. After his many outbursts, I'm to the point of saying it's not worth it anymore. I don't need the drama in my life man, and as I get older I find I'm getting less tolerant of it.

Don't mean to blather. I guess my point in posting is that I'm proud of myself for handling the situation in a very Dude-like manner, whereas in the past I may have not. Perhaps there is an unspoken message here...
One that comes to mind that fits here is "Fuck it can't be worried about that shit. Life goes on man."

Good reaction dude. I think that there is a finite amount of energy in the world, and it's either uptight or laid back. Whatever choice we make at any given moment tips the scales one way or the other.
