So Windows Eight came out today.

Windows Eight...ho hum!

So Windows Eight came out today. I dropped by a local computer store to check it crowds, no one looking at any laptops or desktops, no one seemed to give a flying hoot. Perhaps if Bill and Steve would have been there to pass out autographs it might have helped.

My first impression; big, clunky, waste of desktop space, dumb for a non-touch screen laptop or desktop, felt like playing with space grabbing big colored goofy blocks worthy of a playpen nursery. Overly commercial and silly looking obviously designed to turn your desktop, or mobile device, into Microsoft's personal App, Music and Video store.

Perfect for dumb downed inner city metro geeks trying to join every social network on the net, jam their device with as many useless apps as possible and share as many photos, MP3s and trendy YouTube vids as they can while hooking up at their local Starbucks to talk about tonight's clubbing plans.

I think one main reason for the "look and feel" of Metro/Windows Eight is to dazzle you with with an animated screen surface; maybe people are getting tired of clicking on those dull icons all over their desktop and want that "reach out and touch" sensation and response that helps to bond you with your device, be it a tablet computer, laptop or smart phone. They are definitely trying to "bring it to life."

This is NOT a serious GUI beyond the motivation of driving social trends to a profitable marketing situation for Microsoft. I bet it's unlikely that the business or government world will embrace it any time soon.

And, it's more or less fucking dull looking beyond the first look, possible even somewhat insulting and childish looking.

Damn; my arm is still tired from all that "poking and swiping." Nice try, Microsoft. Try again. Sorry, I'll pass at this point.::)

IMHDO, this is not me.

Good point about business users... I wonder if there's a "power user" option? How does one - say - reconfigure their TCP settings to manually set an IP address? Would MS be that stoopit so as to completely ignore the business/server market? There's gotta be more...

I don't fancy trying to do cad on it but as a display tool for interactive presentations it may have a use, like in the recent bond films

If I wanted to touch a screen the whole time I would stick with a smart phone or tablet....
