« on: February 12, 2010, 01:04:49 AM »
Hey look you guys seem to know how to relax and take it easy.
So, Help me out?
I've had a couple deaths, A couple breakups, A couple near misses with the family and a couple hard hits.
How do you guys deal with the rough times?

Well the thing to do is abide. That's the magic word here. Sometimes life's a bitch, man, it's strikes and gutters. Especially in case of the death of  loved ones, there is nothing you can do...
Maybe these words may inspire you, as they inspired me lots of times:

"Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, the past is gone, the future has not yet started"
-Buddha-

"So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."
-Jesus Christ-

"Just, take it easy, man"

Well, that wraps her all up. Good luck man, take 'er easy...
- the Dude -
Stop thinking too uptight, just take it easy and abide.

Neve underestimate the power of stimulants.  My wife never drinks but her dad died a week before this past christmas.  She started hitting the hot damn and amaretto stone sours and it helped her to abide.   FunkinA gave great advice "ABIDE".  I'm sorry for your losses and hard times dude, just taker easy and say fuck it alot.  It helps.   ;D

Heavy prescription medication.

I don't advise self medication (drinking , or other alternatives). Tried it myself but you can just push yourself further down with that shit.

Though you do have to be careful with the anti-depressants, they did turn my head off completely, probably what I needed at the time but after a while I stopped going back for more.

Drinking doesn't stop you remembering it just makes you forget you had a shit night remembering.

There is only so far you can beat yourself up about what you have or haven't, should or shouldn't do. It's very easy to say don't mind the past but very difficult trying to deal with that on a day to day basis.

Sometimes we have to endure the hard times to grow. Personally I'm an emotional giant (lot of shit in my life previously). I'm the one that a lot of my family turn to when they hit rock bottom.

I've had a lot of bad shit happen in my life dude...everything from War and the death of buddies to being homeless and losing everything......

Here I am...still alive and kicking and with my mental health in a fairly good state...

The mantra that gets me through is "This too will pass" but hey the same mantra applies to the good times too.

Just abide Dude Things will get better.

Perhaps that's another factor that ties us together here. I can't claim the war bit but have been homeless for a while, lost a lot of friends when I was younger (mostly because they were nut job biker loonies), I am an ex-beaten Husband, spent eight months on medication and nearly lost my house (again) due to depression.

I always put it down to being too stupid to stay down after I take a good kicking from life. You know the sort of scene where the big nasty really kicks the shit out of someone, their lying on their face in the mud he's dusting his hands off and walking away and the stupid bastard is dragging himself up to fight again. That's me and life.

A distraught mother came to the Buddha one day to beg him to bring her dead son back to life. The Buddha gave her a bowl and said she was to go to every house in the village, and get a single grain of rice from every family that had not lost a loved one. She eagerly grabbed the bowl and began her quest, a number of days she returned with the empty bowl, she handed it to the Buddha and thanked him.

The moral is, you are not alone, suffering is what binds us one to another, it is inescapable life, sometimes the bahr eats you, but eventually it eats us all. The pain you feel is the same pain I feel as we peer into freshly dug graves. The fear you feel of being unsheltered in a dangerous world is the same fear we all face. It is what unites us in our humanity, then you see that easing suffering is our most noble endevour, sometimes relieving our own pain is not an option, in those circumstances it can help to relieve others suffering, because if you do, you have eased some of the pain in our human community, that will make you feel better, and it will help you face your own dilemmas.

When i get hit by life particularly hard, I often think of a story I saw in a BBC doc, it was about a young boy in Somalia, his parents were blown up by a mortar shell as they slept in their bed. Orphaned at 6 years old, with no options he picked up an AK and worked at road blocks to extort money for tolls, he was killed in a shoot out at 8 years old. No matter how bad it gets for me, in relation to this poor suffering life, I am truly blessed.

That and, a lot of weed.

Peace

I don't deal with tough times well.

Usually ends up with a lot of self destruction, which leads to more tough times.

Literally the best thing you can do is to accept the past for what it is, smile and nod, and move the hell on with whatever you have left and never look back.

If you're thinking about suicide, let me know. I practically have a Ph.D in that department.
Short answer: Don't do it.

Instead of thinking about things in the past, do something good right now.
The worst thing is to think too much, your brain is busy and overheated but your body is unable to do anything. Find a simple acitivity that you like and make your hands, not your brain, busy.
