If you notice, a day or so later when the landlord comes to visit The Dude he says "tomorrow's already the 10th...." in reference to the rent that he is owed.
So from this we can gather that the Dude is not only a prophet, but a cheap postdating prophet at that.

It gives a new frame of reference to the timeline in the movie if you ask me. Not to mention Dude, not to mention that the uh broadcast... that was playing... you know on the TV.. That originally aired 1 day before...
