Post by: Duderek on September 07, 2009, 12:59:20 PM
Has anyone got a list of countries that accept Dudeism as a religion man.

I don't like to imagine what dudeism would have to become to gain government acceptance.

If Scientology can then everyone can. Even goat's worshippers. Nothing against goats though.  8)

That's a valid question tho, can we really marry people for instance? I seem to remember reading on here that once we have our business papers proving we are ordained, we can. (?)

It depends where you live. Here in Italy you can't since if your religion doesn't have official recognition by the state whatever you do doesn't have legal value. You can perform any ceremony as there is freedom of religion but to have legal recognition of marriage you must be married by the major, and for baby naming you have to go by yourself to the county clerk. Well, for now.

In the US marriage regulations are largely the providence of the states.   Some states have pretty strict requirements for who can officiate a marriage, others allow anyone who self declares as a religious leader to officiate and still others even allow one of the people getting married to conduct the ceremony.

So it depends on which government you are as to what you can and cannot, in the eyes of the law, do as a reverend in the Dudeist faith.   Lotta ins, lotta outs.

My advice: Do research with your local laws (many of them are online these days).  Be prepared to describe you faith to officials clearly and succinctly (in many cases it might serve you best to leave out the 'based on the movie' part).  Know that you might still run into a brick wall because some closed minded thug decides that you are falsely representing yourself as a clergyman.

Take it easy, man.

It might be an idea to say that you are a Dudeist Monk instead of a Priest. This could prepare them mentally to the Eastern thing instead of thinking of a Catholic Priest and making comparison.

Ok, ok maybe I saw Bulletproof Monk too many times.  8)

But I think Monk gives a smoother approach or presentation.
