OK, Dudes. I had a White Russian the other night, and went with an off-brand :The Grind" I think, coffee liqueur. Like Kahlua, it gave me a wicked migraine. I won't touch the stuff now. I though it could just be the alcohol, but I indulge in an oat-soda here and there so I highly doubt one mixed drink is the cause, and the brand of vodka used is usually trouble free.
Anyway, any brands out there I should try that are non-migraine-inducing?
As a fellow migraine sufferer, that's a tough one. Migraine triggers can sometimes be very hard to pin down. What you could do is try Bailey's (I don't think it's a true coffee liqueur, just coffee flavored) or Patron XO. If those do it, it might be tough to figure out.
Hey, thanks! Yeah, unlike other foods alcohol makers don't have to list their ingredients (in the US, might be different elsewhere). I'll give it a shot (no pun intended :) ) or just try a coffee syrup with no alcohol. At least then I can read what's in the stuff. :)
It is more likely the vodka I would guess. But I suppose it could be the Kahlua substitute.
Typically cheap alcoholic drinks contain glycerin.
That's also a major ingredient in all kinds of soaps.
Yeah it's disgusting.
It will give you a horrible headache even if you aren't a migraine sufferer.
There is always the diy option. 1 cup cold brew coffee, 2 cups simple syrup 1.5 cups rum a tiny bit of vanilla extract. Stir it up and you have homemade Kaluha. Simple syrup is one cup of sugar stirred into water as soon as it starts to boil. Don?t forget to remove from heat once mixed, burnt sugar smells BAD.
Thanks, will likely go with the homemade options. I've had the vodka (several times alone) before which doesn't give me the problem. Tried it with chocolate syrup and a bit of espresso powder the other night. Not the same but also not migraine-inducing. Strikes and gutters, will figure it out. Thanks for the recipe, will be giving it a try. :)
It's better to buy liqueurs of higher quality for bars (Cointreau, Passoa, Tempus Fuigit, Chambord, Kahlua, Krupnik.... etc). However there are cheaper brands, they usually make a lot of flavors of liqueurs. What is the best one? These are the more popular ones. Each of these have their own unique flavors for example- Briottet makes a Pimento, Prickly Pear and Cactus liqueur.
