I have for a few years been sporting the same hairstyle as the Dude - same length but less curly. Sadly my head and face had been very itchy for some time and i had a terrible rash on my face so bad I couldn't sit down. So finally I had to see the doctor and he told me it was an incurable skin disease that I can only keep down by using a special shampoo and ointment.
The good news is that the stuff works but the sad news is that the doctor also told me to get a haircut to give my scalp more room to "breathe" and more direct sunlight. So I got a buzz haircut today and it's nice the irritation is gone but it does make me feel less dudely. I know that unlike how Samson's strength was located in his hair, my dudenature is NOT located in my long locks but it's still a bummer, man. But I guess it's just another reminder (like Meekon often says) to be dudeist and not to be The Dude. But it can be tricky for a new dudeist to not confuse the two.
So how do you guys deal with this: How do you remind yourself to be dudeist and not just someone who imitates a character from a movie?
I just take it easy man, you may have lost your sweet locks, but you haven't lost the dude in you.
Remember what Winston Churchill said in 1948 - "It is not the locks that make the dude, but the dude who makes the locks."
And always remember, no matter what happens, the dude abides.
I reckon The Dude would have cut his hair if he needed to. It'd have been a bummer but, you know, what are ya gonna do? Can't be worried about that shit. Fuck it. Go bowling. Own the shorter hair style and rock it. It wouldn't be, like, (shocked) "Hey, that's The Dude with short hair!", it'd still be (appreciative) "Hey, there's The Dude. Short hair, man? Nice!".
I let my hair grow long. It's cool. Looks rocking. First time it gets to be a drag or unhealthy, that hair is gone, man. I look great with flowing tresses or bald. Whatever works.

This exactly, I got long hair too but it used to be way longer, then I cut it because it got too hot one summer, but it's growin back out now.

They shave there head so there pride vanish alongside with there hair.
I also shave my head.
I don't need to try to look like a character from a movie to make me fell better about universe.
But the Dude has long hair...
