My companion of 14 years passed away last January. He was old for a dog of his size, and was hurting pretty bad. It was a rough one for this dude, I'm not ashamed to admit I cried a lot, even took a couple days off of work to grieve. We had him cremated and we keep his ashes and his collar on our fireplace mantle. My special lady friend has been saying we should get a puppy since he passed, but I just hadn't been ready to jump back in and make a bond with a new friend. But I think I'm ready now. I think I can bring the balance back to the way it's always been: 2 dogs, 2 cats, a Dude and his special lady friend.
That's a bummer man.
It's tough to lose a pet.
I'm in deep shit when my dog dies.
He's my shadow.
A total Dude.
I say definitely get another one.

Yeah, man. Sounds like you're ready and can give another dog a good home. He'd want you to. Remember: you're not replacing your little buddy, you're just making another friend.
Someone once said that getting a dog is a downpayment on heartbreak. It's rare for us to outlive them. I was devastated when I lost my last dog and couldn't bear to have another. That being said, I eventually got a cat and I fear the day the evil (cute) little shit (sweetheart) leaves me.
