Title: Does any dude have experience officiating in NYC/ State?
Post by: Bergdude on July 31, 2009, 09:44:35 AM
Just got my ordainment yesterday and I'm stoked to go out and start doing the Dude's work, but I know from experience (we had a friend marry us through the Church of Universal Life last year) that NY is one of the states which requires extra info vis a vis wedding ceremonies.  I looked through the State legaleeze, and I think I'm cool, but wondering if anyone has specific experience getting registered here in New York using the papers provided in the "Complete Ordination Kit" I ordered from the site store yesterday.

Any help would be, like, you know, appreciated.

Thanks, man

Way to go Donny!! First you gotta go door to door to tell all your neighbors and exes that they can fuckin' board it. Then you just gerrymander this free ministerial document in to a tax free income or charitable outfit. Than just get some burger, some beer, and you're fuckin' troubles are over dude!

Did you perform the NY ceremony?  I'm residing in Oregon, but may fly out to Buffalo, NY next year to marry my cousin.  I've performed a ceremony in Florida under my Florida Notary license before, but have not used the Dudeist ordination yet.  Any help would be awesome!  I just want to make sure that this is legal in NY.  It seems that after the ceremony, I have to file the license with the county (Erie) Clerk.  Hate for them to say it isn't valid.

Sorry dude...I cannot help you on this, but I do wish to welcome you to our nice (mostly) quiet beach community.
I hope a smarter fella than I on this subject can help you out here.
Maybe the Rev Ed C has some new  information to bring to light here?

Welcome dude. Smoke em if you got em. 8)

Not my area of experitise.  I'd pass the buck to Meekon, but he's really only a UK legal expert?  We got any legal-beagles from the US knocking about?  Check the bar, man :)

This is generally down to particulars of state legislation.

You should be able to enquire what constitutes a recognised religion and what legally you have to do to have recognition as a legitimate entity (Mission, or congregation) at your local town hall (or similar municipal facility).

A really good source of info is the Universal Light Church (http://ulc.net/index.php?page=wedding_laws). This is a listing by state on their site (please stop by and read the full article):

Quote from: ULC

NEW YORK
Marriages may be performed by a clergyman or minister of any religion. Ministers do not have to be licensed except that before performing marriages in New York City, the minister must register his or her name and address in the office of the city clerk of the city of New York.  Documentation, to be obtained from ULC Headquarters must be provided with the application for registration in New York City.  Ministers must complete a marriage certificate and return it to the town or city clerk who issued the marriage license within 5 days after the marriage. --- For questions see the town or city clerk.

It may be useful to become duel ordained with this organisation, they don't mind. I know of Pagan friends in the past who have used the ULC ordination to bypass local by-laws, and perform Pagan weddings.

Now as usual I must stress that I in no way represent myself as a Lawyer or legal specialist and thoroughly recommend consulting a professional in this area before relying on anything here.

I live in NY state and while I can't say for sure I'm betting on an uphill battle here.
Best of luck though.
