Title: Indo-Tibetan Dudeism - Renunciation
Post by: WeAreSame on July 03, 2009, 12:55:18 PM
Have studied Buddhism for about twenty years, the last ten intensely focused on the Tibetan tradition...you know, high lamas, meditation, learning the Tibetan language, what have you.

Simultaneously, always a student of The Dude. But it took twenty years of studying the most profound teachings of the East to get me to the point of truly appreciating the profundity of The Dude, or His Dudeness, or the Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing.

So, being a newly ordained Dudeist priest, figured I'd expound upon some of the parallels, and connections, even if at times there is no literal connection...starting with the first of the three aspects of the path...renunciation.

Now...renunciation...that's a term no one would apply where I come from. Kinda means realizing that the world is fucked up. That, existentially, the plan has crashed into the mountain.  But, a wiser fella than me pointed out that the original Sanskrit term shouldn't be translated as "renunciation," but as "arising from."

Now...The Dude...he's risen above.  Everyone's all concerned about "me and mine" and having this and that, and making sure that other people know that you have this and that.  But the Dude...he abides.  He walks to the grocery store in a bath robe. No credit cards owned.  He knows when life is a league game, and when it's not. And he knows that since sometimes you eat the bear, and well...sometimes, sometimes the bear eats you, there's no point in getting all worked up about it.

He's risen above, takin' it easy for all us sinners. Now, I won't call him a hero...'cause, what's a hero...but, he's the man for his time...and there's no reason why we can't be the same.

Now, that don't mean we have to get all uptight and structured and trying to copy his rituals...the only way to be a good Dudeist is to abide...some may bowl, some may quilt, some may Xbox360....but all in the knowledge that they've risen above.

Beyond profound posting dude. Any way of tying the whole movie together with the book of the dead? The rug always struck me as being like the focal point of a mandala propelling the film toward its conclusion, which has nothing to do with the rug- just as true meditation aspires to transcend to empty forms of focus. Thanks for the insights. 8)

sorry man...book of the dead not part of the tradition I studied...stages of death part of higher, esoteric stuff...stuff that I won't go into here...you know, lotta of ins, lotta of outs, and that's where I draw a line in the sand...just gonna stick to the open teachings and parallels...and I wouldn't hold out much hope for the tape deck though...or the Creedence

See the bowling thing had got me worried for a bit (no real hand eye coordination when it comes to throwing things), but the xbox360 thing I can do.

I personally studied Zen, but here in the West, and not quite to the extent you seem to have studied Tibetan Buddhism.
