Title: Official beer?
Post by: RustyMarmot on January 28, 2016, 05:23:53 PM
I was wondering if there are any other brewers amongst my dude brothers and sisters?  I was pondering the idea of an official libation.  Maybe something in a nice dark cream ale with hints of coffee on the backside.  I'm going to be brewing a nice Scottish Amber this weekend, but in three weeks, I'll be ready to make something new.

I guess Miller Genuine Draft could be the official oat soda as much as white Russian's are the cocktail of choice.

I also brew the odd beer now and then. I have a  recipe for a hemp/ wheat beer/ IPA which I have been meaning to get going for a while now, but need to A, get off my lazy ass and B, find a suitable vessel to boil the mash in. I got the idea from a beer called Bongwater, (though can't remember who makes it).

I usually make 3,  5 gallon brews a year, (roughly 120 pints),  which works out a lot cheaper than going out drinking, besides, I find it satisfying to make too! ;-)

I was thinking of brewing an Imperial Blonde with coffee and lactose for Day of the Dude.

Kettle House Brewing makes a Bongwater Porter, and an IPA.  I haven't tried them, but I will search them out.

Nice! I used to have three or four batches going at a time, but now I just do it when the feeling grabs me.

I've not made a hemp beer before and from what I have read, it can either be really nice, or be gross. Will find out as and when I get round to making it. Will be using pale malt, cascade and fuggle hops, roasted hemp seed, Irish moss and a decent yeast culture. Mmm getting thirsty now!

I'll look forward to hearing how it turned out.  How much hemp seed do you think will be needed to add to the flavor?

Can't remember dude, I'll have to check the recipe, but don't think it's a lot. Apparently, you have to roast the oils out, or it'll turn nasty. Think you put em in like 40/45 mins into the boil before sparging. Again, I'm no expert.

My recipe is (now I've found it), makes 5 gallons/40 ish pints.

Boil 3kg pale malt, 1kg toasted oats, 1oz  crushed and lightly roasted hemp seed and 1/2 oz cascade hops in 10 litres/ 2 gallons of water.

In the last 15 mins of boil, add 1oz fuggle hops and 1/2 tbsp Irish moss. Sparge, cool to 20-27°c/70-82°f, make up tp 5 gall, and add ale yeast to ferment.

Est original gravity: 1.047,
Est final gravity: 1.015.

Man, that hemp beer sounds interesting. When you say "toasted oats" do you mean the flaked or the malt? Either way, I'm tempted to give the beer a shot. But I already have one fermenting now (Pliney the Elder clone) and a yeast starter on a stir-plate for a weekend brew (Rye Barleywine). Maybe in a month or so.

I like Cascade and Fuggles a lot; they should go well with the grain bill and hemp adjunct. As a relative brewing noob, big beers hide my mistakes better than those with light or average gravities. So, I'm curious about ramping up the OG to maybe 1.090 with some crystal malt and a few pounds of rock candy or corn sugar to dry it out.

If I bump up the malt, then the hops would need increased, too. I wonder if some of the resinous, almost weedy, strains like Columbus, Simcoe, Chinook would bolster the hemp factor? It would definitely start looking like a DIPA or Imperial IPA.

Local company makes a "Coffee Cup" stout that is pretty Dudely.
9% alcohol. And way Coffee flavored. In a good way.

This is one of my favorites... even the label is pretty Dudely.  Terrapin Brewery makes Liquid Bliss Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter.  Yep, tastes just like it sounds... A Reece Cup in a bottle.

Tell me this is really a thing.

I will subject my bank account to mortal wounds to obtain these beverages.

Oh,  they're real. And they're tasty. But I don't think either one is currently available in bottles. El Dankerino  hits the tap list fairly often. I'll find out when they're brewing either one again, and maybe I can ship some to my fellow dudes.

I have made some severe servings of shit how'd the floor get up here. Meads and ales, but nary a lager for temp control fucked that goat. As fr scotch ales my base recipe is golden promise, golden naked oats, peat smoked, heather, and goldings. All boiled till a dark red. It takes hours. That said i thought of doing a gallon or 3 of the second grain run with apricot and lacto, then blending the main and second runs pre bottling. As for stouts that'd be a novel, they're my favourite and about half of what i made over 9 years.
