Title: It's inevitable...
Post by: BikerDude on June 23, 2014, 12:00:28 PM
How long before one of the nuts brings this into the US, Britain, Europe?
I'm betting not long. A free weapon of mass destruction.

If I understand it correctly, accidental transmission is just as, if not more likely as your hypothetical "nut" scenario.
It's pretty scary either way.

I don't think accidental transmission is as likely because typically in the US and Europe we don't eat a lot of monkey or bat meat. I'd say the fact that we haven't had an outbreak outside of remote areas on the African continent supports this. And when it does infect a small village there it decimates it entirely. Nearly all are infected and nearly all of them die. Then it typically ends.
But the likely hood that someone would take the initiative to bring the infection to New York City, I'd say that is as I said "inevitable". It's easier and much more deadly than a bomb. And in a densely populated area it would be a lot more difficult to contain especially if it was being intentionally spread.
All the airport checkpoints and body scanners in the world is not going to be able to stop it.
In fact "The Report of the Commission on the Prevention of WMD Proliferation and Terrorism" says
Quote
RECOMMENDATION 1:
The United States should under-take a series of mutually reinforcing domestic measures to
prevent bioterrorism:
(1) conduct a comprehensive review of the domestic program to secure dangerous pathogens,
(2) develop a national strategy for advancing bioforensic capa-bilities,
(3) tighten government oversight of high-containment
laboratories,
(4) promote a culture of security awareness in the life sciences community, and
(5) enhance the nation?s capabili-ties for rapid response to prevent biological attacks from
inflicting mass casualties.
Honestly I don't think any of that is going to work against bio-terrorism. These outbreaks more of less ARE the laboratories for producing pathogens. Terrorist groups don't really need to set up labs when you have a group of infected individuals. the fact is that the CDC knows this. But they have a very long history of sugar coating this sort of news to prevent panic.

Well, you could be right. All I know is that the UK Customs seem to have significantly reduced the illegal importation of bushmeat, but I don't know if they're completely stopped it. There were a couple of fairly well publicised cases (https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=london+bushmeat&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a&channel=fflb&gfe_rd=cr&ei=lXipU7v_M4LR8ge91IHYDQ) a few years ago.
