NASA Goes With 'Tron-Like' Design For Next Spacesuit

When not playing catch-up with Elon Musk, NASA busies itself preparing for future space missions that will send humans to our nearest planetary neighbor, Old Dusty McRedFace, AKA Mars.

One key element of this long-overdue mission will be to update the Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU, or what most people recognize as "a spacesuit"), which has remained largely unchanged since its last upgrade in 1981. The Agency has literally been using the same EMU design from the dawn of MTV right on through to the end of the U.S. Shuttle program in 2011.

Enter NASA's next-gen "Z Series" spacesuits, which will be used for micro-gravity activities such as spacewalks as well as planetary activities like exploring the surface of Mars. The first version, the Z-1, made its debut in 2012, but now NASA has an updated version - selected with the assistance of crowd-sourced space fans.
