Title: THINK LIKE A KOAN! A Daily Meditation on Decoding The Big Lebowski.
Post by: Nolan Hofstadter on April 01, 2014, 11:11:21 PM
The Ben-Hur Auto Repair sign (The Big Lebowski; 40 min) is in plain view across the parking lot of the bowling alley. To what is it referring?

REFERENCE: Ben-Hur (1959 film)

LEBOWSKI CODE: One of many allusions to the Ancient Palestine.

A small pearl, I would say.

Or is it...

Ben-Hur was adapted from Lew Wallace's 1880 novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ. The screenplay is credited to Karl Tunberg but includes contributions from Maxwell Anderson, S. N. Behrman, Gore Vidal, and Christopher Fry??

"We Venerate Thy Cross"1 (The Big Lebowski; 61 min [and end credits 116 min]) is playing in the backgound in Maude's loft. At one point the Dude states, "Hey, man, why don't you listen occasionally. You might learn something." Maybe we can! Also, etymologies for Maude include "woman from Magdala"/"mighty in battle." She echoes Mary of Magdala of the Gospels.

Pearls by Coens. Two pearls most certainly do not make a strand.

THE ANTI-STRIKE

In Chapter 8 "Jesus" (The Big Lebowski 25 min) there is a 4 second scene in reverse image. An indicator of code? The viewer's attention is on the licked purple ball, oblivious to reversed lane numbers ascending to the left. The scene is righted after the strike. However, upon closer inspection it becomes apparent that things have changed again. Jesus is now on lane '21.' What the fuck!?

After an air-kiss to Donny (as if between two tangent universes), Jesus points to the heavens and immediately the camera does a close-up flyby of Score Projector '23.'

REFERENCE: Gospel of John 21:23 This word therefore went out among the brethren, That disciple [[THE Dude]] does not die. And Jesus did not say to him, He does not die; but, If I will that he abide until I come, what [is that] to thee?1

LEBOWSKI CODE: Another fine example of a Coen Brothers' foreshadowing . . .

20140404: You're right Doug. So let me reveal a signal code. A signal of significance in the Lebowski Code is thrice repeating (e.g., "your roll, your roll, your roll"). It's like in Donny Darko (Director's Cut, 28 min) when the narrator says, "Pay close attention, you could miss something."  In the "Jesus" chapter of The Big Lebowski, there are actually thee discontinuities: 1) image reversal, 2) Jesus now on lane 21, and 3) Jesus's teammates on lane 19. BROTHER'S SHAMUS, PAY CLOSE ATTENTION.

THRICE!

Joel & Ethan's Pearl Co.  Our motto is, "We Protect Our Beds."

Now three pearls on a strand? Nothing to write home about to be sure, but durned interestin'.

A LAND FLOWING WITH MILK & HONEY

The Big Lebowski (3 min): The Dude is shoved head first into his indoor honey-bucket,1 milk splashing every which way. Woo then let's go a flow on the Dude's rug.

CODED SIGNALS OF SIGNIFICANCE: Thrice stylized Yin-Yangs: 609, 069, 609. Pay close attention!

LEBOWSKI CODE: An allusion to the time and place of the man echoed by the Dude. 'A land flowing with milk and honey' is Ancient Palestine, Judaism.2  Woo's 'water way' is the East, Taoism.3  Woo states, "Ever thus to deadbeats, Lebowski." In Taoism, 'Wu Wei' literally means "non-action" or "non-doing."3  Strands both East and West mingle to offer "philosophical-religious traditions that predate and (I think) inform Dudeism" and The Dude!   Remember, "The chinaman is not the issue here." He is an associate of Jackie Treehorn.

CODE MATCHES: The sign (The Ben-Hur Auto Repair); the song ("We Venerate Thy Cross").

Now to which strand, East or West, do I add this pearl?  Of course, a pearl to each!

P.S. Congrats to the afore attested Pearl Diver!

RE-POSTED FROM 20140318 GENERAL DISCUSSION

"All the Dude ever wanted, was his rug back."

"This a-here story I'm 'bout to unfold is a story 'bout the story itself.  And, I reckon it's 'bout them tellers too. The Coen Brothers! What I find so durned interestin' is how sneakily these fellas spun a golden yarn into them threads that make up that thar rug.  Same said rug that, in the parlance of our times, "tied the room together."

And here's the story, Dudes: Once upon a time there was a story. But it weren't no ordinary story. It were a story 'bout a story. Hell, it were a story 'bout a pickle barrel full of stories. Now this a-here story caused such a warmin' inside me . . . well, I wanted to hear it again and again.  And then, and then . . .  I begun to see things!  Deep in the pile of that thar rug, hidden as it were down in the warp and weft.  Why, there's a story deeperin' I ever figured.  A story within a story, and that story within yet another story.  And that there's the story!  "Welp, that about does her.  Wraps her all up."

To tell the truth, friend, the warp and weft of all this sometimes leaves my head a hurtin'.  Maybe I'm better for it though!  My room does seem much tied together now.

But, oh what a wonderful feelin'
Just to know that you are near,
           It sets my heart a-reeling
From my toe(s) up to my ear(s).
The Man In Me (Bob Dylan)

I RETURN TO THE ABOVE METAPHOR FOR THE PURPOSE FRAMING THE POST THAT IS TO FOLLOW. THE FIRST-LEVEL-STORY OF THE DUDE STANDS ON ITS OWN. THE ACTING, THE DIALOGUES, AND THE ENTANGLEMENTS OF HUMAN BEINGS ALL UP IN EACH OTHERS' PROJECTS! THESE ELEMENTS--DEFTLY SCRIPTED, SCORED, DIRECTED, AND EDITED--MAKE FOR A CULTURAL PEARL THAT WILL STAND THE TEST OF TIME. A CULT FILM.

NOW, I HAVE BEEN CRITICIZED FOR 'CHRISTIANIZING' THE BIG LEBOWSKI. SORRY, I DO NOT HAVE A DOG IN THAT FIGHT. I HAVE TO NO END ENJOYED THE FIRST-LEVEL-STORY OF THE FILM. THAT SAID, WHAT I AM ABOUT HERE IS EXPLICATING THE SECOND-LEVEL-STORY AND LEAVING THE INTERPRETATION OF THE THIRD-LEVEL-STORY TO THE DUDES AT LARGE. THAT LINE, I WILL NOT CROSS.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
Also, some dudes might be interested in this exposition of the concept of kairos (http://kairos.technorhetoric.net/layers/metaphor.html), the moment when affordance, opportunity and correct action coincide. This concept can apply equally well to the examples given in the linked article, archery, weaving and rhetoric, as it can to many other spheres of human activity, from bowling to musical performance and perhaps even coitus.

CODED SIGNALS OF SIGNIFICANCE: THRICES GALORE:  thrice scene dislocations [see above reply "The Anti-Strike"]; thrise "Jesus" (one in chapter title, Jesus' monogram, the Dude), thrice use of "8" (one in chapter number, two by Walter regarding eight-year-olds); thrice Donny's insistence, "I am the walrus"; and, thrice "your roll, your roll, your roll."

CODE MATCHES: The sign (The Ben-Hur Auto Repair); the song ("We Venerate Thy Cross"). Now add Lane 23 (see above previous posting, "The Anti-Strike").  The Dude and Walter are sitting in waiting area 23, Donnie triangulated in the Dude's arm.

LEBOWSKI CODE: This "what-have-you" has something to do with the Gospel of John.

Not to get off the point, but it's weird how frequently archery figured into Grecian (particularly Aristotelian) artistic terms. Kairos, above, Hammartia (falling short of the mark - which later somehow deviated into "sin"), toxon... I saw a show a while back, can't remember the name right now, that pointed out the same thing as to medieval terms coming from falconry.  I need to find that again...

'Donald' (etym, "world rule") 'Theodore' (etym, "God's gift') 'Kerabotsos' (oronym: "care abouts us")

ALL BY WAY OF POINTING OUT: THE DUDE AIN'T ECHOIN' THE CHRIST

It is upon The Dude (the Disciple Jesus loved) that Donny's ashes cling.
No doubt, the first-level-story is about the Dude. However, the second-level-story echoes the Apostle John,
so much so a man for his time and place that Jesus says to Peter,
"If I will that he abide until I come, what [is that] to you to thee?"1

THE DUDE ABIDES!

See even your bible quote is overly complicated:

John 21:23

New International Version (NIV)

from your own source:

Because of this, the rumor spread among the believers that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?"

Stumblin' Stumbleweed Dude,

I dig your style man. Got that whole weed thing going.

So Dude, to my way of thinking the sooner we crack the Western code in this ahere second-layer-story the sooner we can move on to the East. As I've said before, it's like the two primary stories--West & East--are dancin' around each other, Yin-Yang fashion.

NECESSARY SHAMUSIN' QUALITY: "You know, this is a very complicated case, Maude. A lotta in, a lotta outs. Uh, you know, fortunately, I'm adhering to a pretty strict, uh, drug regimen to keep my mind, you know [sniffs] limber."  To all Dudes: You would be mistaken if you think the Coen Brothers would place these pearls of code in easy view.  They have never done so, and never will.

The Big Lebowski     >>>    Gospel of John

DONNY IS THE RANSOM

Chapter 18: Jesus (Donny, "I got $18.") i, having said these things, went out with his disciples beyond the torrent Cedron (anagram, "corned"; "I fuck you in the ass, I fuck you in the ass.") where was a garden (parking lot under a sign, "Ben-Hur Auto Repair"), into which he entered, he and his disciples.

2 And Judas also, who delivered him up ("We want the money Lebowski."), knew the place, because Jesus was often there (bowling strikes), in company with his disciples (Walter & The Dude).

3 Judas therefore, having got the band (Autobahn, "Nagelbett"; "There music is a sort of techno pop."), and officers of the chief priests and Pharisees, comes there with lanterns and torches (car torched) and weapons.

4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that were coming upon him (the standing pin), went forth and said to them, Whom seek ye (Are these the Nazis, Walter)?

5 They answered him, Jesus the Nazaraean. Jesus says to them, I am [he]. And Judas also, who delivered him up, stood with them.

6 When therefore he said to them, I am [he], they went away backward and fell to the ground (bowling ball in stomach).

7 He demanded of them therefore again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus the Nazaraean.

8 Jesus answered, I told you that I am [he]: if therefore ye seek me, let these go away;

9 that the word might be fulfilled which he spoke, [As to] those whom thou hast given me, I have not lost one of them (The Stranger, "Things seem to work out pretty good for the Dude & Walter.").

10 Simon Peter therefore, having a sword (word!), drew it, and smote the bondman of the high priest and cut off his right ear (word!); and the bondman's name was Malchus.

So basically the film is about two fictional characters. The Dude who is believable and Jesus who isn't.

That's cool man...that's really cool.

The movie's message is clear: "Never base a major life decision on what a 2,000 year old fictional carpenter would do."

Well, that or: "Never order seafood from a restaurant known for its steak."

Rumor is they're both pretty central to the Gospel of John.

Jesus, man, can you change the station?
I see absolutely no evidence in the above post to suggest, even remotely, that the Coens intended Donny to represent a Christ-like messiah figure.

PS. My 50th post, this calls for an oat soda.

Just out of curiosity, why does it have to be the Gospel of John?

Masked Dude,

I thought a lot about your question today. I had to think back to last year around the time prior to my first post, "A Midrash of The Gospel of John."  I had watched yet again The Big Lebowski, but this time just after having read The Existential Jesus.1 This evening I found that reference, in the context as it was of the author's own midrash on the The Gospel of John:

These are the last words the Master speaks. The narrative ends with a two-headed reference.
Peter is instructed, 'You, follow me.' John is addressed obliquely, 'If I want him to abide until I come' (emphasis mine).
The Greek verb for 'abide'--meno--can also mean 'stay', 'tarry', 'wait', or 'stand fast' (p. 227).

I remember being surprised at twice coming across the word 'abide' in as many days. My curiosity peaked, I started scrutinizing the film.

Now as the short story goes: After endless hours I found more and more curious instances of thrices (things that happen in threes).  I eventually realized them to be 'significance codes.' So I started concentrating on the scenes in which they appeared (e.g., Donny's thrice uttered "I Am The Walrus.)" Ultimately this thrice led me to Lennon's "I Am The Walrus", the first line of which resonated with a passage from the Gospel of John. Later, I discovered The Stranger's 'sometimes-you-eat-the-bar and sometimes-the-bar-eats-you' resonated with a yet another passage from the Gospel of John. Finally, I found a number-coding system which related bowling lanes (amongst other things) to these same passages. I then found an even deeper number-code system, resonating etymologies, resonating props, so on and so on.

I reached a point where the movie would no longer let me alone. What I experienced was the quite unbelievable flood of analogies, allusions, and references coming up subconsciously, sometimes in my sleep. They continue to this day. Ultimately, I came to the realization that what I was finding was a whole second-level story structure of two tales, East & West. And that structure pointed to an even deeper story or possibly a Koan (which must be experienced for positive life effect). My intuition is that the deepest level of this story will serve, as grandiose as this sounds, as a type of sub-codex that informs character of The Dude.

So hey, what's this code bullshit? As I said, I will not cross the line into the third-level story. I leave that for the personal experiences of Dudes everywhere. Having said that, let me more appreciatively answer your question, Masked Dude.  The Apostle John echoes in The Dude. "The Dude, takin' 'er easy for all of us sinners."  I mean 'hamartia' baby.  In later posts, I will show that the hare of the Hare-mark in the Moon echoes in the Dude as well. Both stories--East & West--strands of narrative DNA.

Now I'm a Joseph Campbell type of guy. I'll end with a quote, "God is a metaphor for that which transcends all levels of intellectual thought. It's as simple as that." And in that, I guess I somewhat agree and somewhat disagree with Caesar Dude. Paradox . . .

I just noticed that "Jeffrey Lebowski" is an anagram of "Beer Sky Life of JW." I can't find any reference to this in any of the sacred manuscripts I have immediately to hand, so this must be a sign to explain the mysterious impregnation of Salian Frankish king Pharamond's wife by an aquatic quinotaur, thus founding the Merovingian dynasty. It would be unwise to attempt to deny or refute this.
Mind you, I also just noticed that the word "options" is an anagram of "spitoon," so perhaps not. Still, it's as plausible as anything else I've seen in this thread.

Look mate congratulations you managed to read a book.

In fact you read a book about the Gospel of John and it's hidden meanings, well done again, not only have you read a book but it had big words and heavy symbolism.

The problem we have is this is not your personal blog site.

Your pearls are but dung to us.

At the moment you are the nutter on the box in Hyde Park Corner that everyone goes to laugh at on a Sunday.

You are perfectly entitled to your opinion, but much like your penis, don't be surprised if people get upset if you go around waving it in peoples faces.

You think there is a code in the film, we get that. What you don't seem to get is, we don't care!

You are preaching christianity to a bunch of Athiests, Taoists, and Buddhists, (and some christians) who just don't care.

In fact it's not the fact that you are preaching christianity to a bunch of Athiests etc, it is the fact that you are preaching.

Thank you for your point of view but we are not interested.

Sorry. I asked my Bavarian friend (she was born & raised in Nuremberg). Christian is the same in English and German. The adjective is christlich. Nihilist is spelled the same. In German it's pronounced more like nee-hee-leest.

They don't rhyme.

THE LAST SUPPER (DETAIL)

_______________

CODE TRIANGULATION

SCENE (Setting & Position): Most paintings of the Last Supper position Jesus between John and Peter.1

SYMBOLS: Donny is wearing a purple2 shirt with 'Jug'3 monogrammed over his heart. Sustenance is laid out before him. The pinsetter lid is raised to create a halo effect.

TEXT & DIALOGUE: The Stranger states, "Well, a wiser fellow than myself once said, Sometimes you eat the bar, and  . . . much obliged . . . sometimes the bar, well, he eats you." In Aramaic, bar translates to "son." Inserting 'son', "Well, a wiser fellow than myself once said, Sometimes you eat the Son, and . . . much obliged . . . sometimes the Son, well, he eats you." Compare John 6:56 "He that eats my flesh and drinks my blood dwells in me and I in him."4

FORESHADOWING: Script and Scripture: In both works of art, Gospel of John and The Big Lebowski, the writers are foreshadowing events to come. In Chapter 6 of the Gospel, the writer is foreshadowing the Last Supper. In The Big Lebwoski, the writers are foreshadowing the Eucharist scenes, blood with Walter and body with the Dude (refer to above reply title ?Eucharist?).

LEBOWSKI CODEX: A triangulation of codes echoes the Last Supper with Donny himself as the Chalice.

so here's the skinny dudes.
I have been going through some rather rough treatments for my recurring lung cancer....I got a collapsed right lung and trying to function on one lung only. Just finished 3 radiation treatments called HDR-airway....you can look that up....it really really sucked. knocked the snot right out of me....no energy...sleeping 14 to 16 hours a day. I started my first cycle of 3 for chemo yesterday....two different drugs and they are both nasty. Why I am doing this I am not real sure...buy a few more years maybe....but they way I feel now i am not so sure I really want to....real tired all the time and nothing interest me....don't even want to  eat....lost 10 pound already....not a good thing.
So anyway Wednesday night I log in and I see Nolan pissing all over our forum again.....I was in No Mood for his bullshit and my inner Walter took over. I locked the thread and put a 7 day ban on Nolan....I was just going to delete his account and kick his ass out of our nice quiet beach community, but then I saw the option to ban for how many days....never used that before so I decided to give it a try.....I can always boot his ass later if need be.
After logging in Thursday after my chemo I read the comment and undid the Walter from Wednesday night. I am still not sure if that was the right thing to do.....we will have to wait and see.
So look Nolan.....I am dying of lung cancer and going through some real nasty shit just to stay alive a few more years. When I log in here I want to enjoy myself and talk with other dudes about dude type nonsense and shit. I'm an Atheist as I believe are most of the dudeist who sign on here. We are Not stupid nolan we been through many a flame war with countless christian asshats. I do not want to have to keep going through the same bullshit over and over again....especially here on the Dudeist Forum. Dudeism has no gods....we do not want any gods, and we sure as shit do Not want your fuckin god. So Please keep your religion to yourself.
You are welcome here to discuss thinks that interest you as a dudeist....talk with us as if we are all sitting together at the bar sharing an oat soda. Please avoid climbing on you soapbox and preaching....that is what you have been doing here so far.
Nolan....become a Dude for real man....take it easy and just enjoy your time here. Talk to us as a fellow dude, not some crazy preacher asshat.
If you can do that everyone will get along just fine, but please remember what I am going through right now, and I have no patience for any bullshit.
And until Oliver decides I am too far over the line and removes my admin.....I do have the authority and the ability to delete all you posts and your account with just a few clicks on a mouse. I have done so a few time in the past when I was feeling good....I am not feeling so good right now so Please do not test me!
Remember...first....before all else.....Please Do No Harm. 8)

Indeed. The plot thickens. I wonder if that was an intentional spelling to get a particular accent or the phonetics they wanted or if this script is a some kind of a compromised second draft.

When I do a J... I see that it is a female virgin that gives forth her fruit. Probably where the term Mary Jane comes in. Just my opinion and blathering.
