To give advice to a man who asks what to do with his life implies something very close to egomania. To presume to point a man to the right and ultimate goal — to point with a trembling finger in the RIGHT direction is something only a fool would take upon himself.

At the Brain Pickings (http://www.brainpickings.org/index.php/2013/11/04/hunter-s-thomspon-letters-of-note-advice/) web site.

Have a look round there's a lot of interesting stuff there including some bits about Alan Watts.

Nice stuff. I tend to be of the opinion that life isn't as simple as having a single right direction. What works for me seems to be very similar to what works for the Dude, but for others it may be different. When people start conflict over their different paths is when it becomes a problem.
