It's not Islam, it's the NATION OF ISLAM. The Nation of Islam has nothing to with mainstream Islam. It's rather a cultic bastardization of Islam. These are two totally different things. Perhaps, but The Nation of Islam believes they ARE Islamic and authentic Muslims. Who are we to say they are not? Your comment of "The NOI does not represent mainstream Muslims any more than the Klan represents mainstream Christians" doesn't prove anything and is merely abstract.
Having read things by Elijah Muhammad, Malcolm X / Malik Shabazz (not to be confused with Malik Zulu Shabazz), and having known a NOI man, I've learned that NOI are a very Afrocentric version of Islam.
The reason Iconocclesiastes has a point is that although NOI says they are peaceful, Wallace Fard Muhammad asserted that white people are devils created by Yakub (Jacob) and that Yakub and his white devils regularly killed dark babies. White devils cannot follow Allah because they are inherently evil.
This isn't in line with mainstream Islam that would allow anyone to convert. That's why when Malcolm X was on his pilgrimage (Elijah and Farrakhan tried to talk him out of it) he saw a Scandinavian Muslim. He returned, calling them liars.
It's a strange story. They're based on Islam but have changed it around. So I'm not saying they definitely are not Muslim, but they've distorted it a fair bit.
