...as a general rule of thumb, (and there are a few exceptions to this, most notably Mother Duderior) anybody who claims to be a Dudeist and has never even set foot in the United States, is actually a poser and a f***ing amateur.
IMO, one cannot fully and truly "get" The Big Lebowski unless one is thoroughly familiarized with my country and our popular culture.
So that being said: all of the nihilist haters can go keep on being nihilistic haters. But if you don't have anything nice to say to me here in this forum, then please leave me alone. There's room for all of us.

Just out of curiosity, what do you consider "nihilist haters"? Not to incite an argument since I'm honestly curious, but it sounds as though it just means "those who are stupid enough to disagree with me."

Am I wrong?
Yes. On several levels.
Being from a place and being familiar with a culture are different things.
Little, if anything, in the film is uniquely American. What references there are to American culture are easily understood.
You're out of your element, Donny. Shut the fuck up.

No. My name is not Donny, and I will not shut the fuck up. Quite to the contrary; I'm gonna stand up for myself (unlike Donny, who should have done so) and tell these Walters not to be such a bunch of a**holes.

Look, I'm an Iraq veteran, man. I did not watch my buddies dies face down in the sand so that I can have these pretentious UK poser-Dudes telling me what's what about one of my favorite movies. I'll bet that most of them have never even set foot in my country, much less in the state of California.

Hell, the guy that turned me on to
The Big Lebowski in the first place died over there in Iraq. His name was Mintzlaff, and he truly was my buddy.
It's pure Americana, man,
Lebowski is. So I'm not gonna let some pretentious, poser Brit explain to me what one of my favorite movies is "really all about", much less give me grief about being a Christian. Hell no, I'm not.
1-800-WHO CARES
life goes on man....can't be worried about that shit.
If you keep going Walter every time someone pokes at you....they are just going to keep poking at you dude.
A wiser fella than I once said..."Keep you buttons to yourself."
If you keep you buttons out there and let anyone push them on you...you will forever be jumping to their tune dude. keep your buttons to yourself and dance to your own music.
Besides...why should you give a fuck what anyone else thinks?
It's just like their opinion man....so fuck it dude....abide. 8)
I'm sure you count me as an attacker, since you've made it clear you think I'm a hater and coward. But you can't play the victim here. You've done your share of baiting and attacking, too. You make these general assumptions and claims, and then go off on anyone who doesn't agree.
Now you're going off on Brits? All I can say is cool your jets. I've learned a lot from people here, especially those whose opinions differ greatly from mine.
And it's not Christians they're going off on. It's anyone with fundie attitudes and sweeping generalizations. You say they're attacking you, but put yourself in our shoes. You keep calling us names for every little thing we don't agree on. You get annoyed when others get on your case, but you're doing the same. We have a cool little pad here. Just abide, man.

Ok now I echo this for the reason of its logic and it is what I tell my kids when they worry about what others think of them.
As for the culture of the movie, it is very easy to say one understands but not always true. I have met many foreigners and they always find the reality different. When they see our culture on movies they dont get the subtle under tones and what have yous. Once they are here for a few years they start to get it and still often find it difficult to blend... Heck you see that in our movies too with the foreigner be a bit off in talk and customs. I grew up with British programming and relate much but not pretentious that I could blend in if I moved there tomorrow, no I know I would stick out and feel out of my element in a few areas. The Big Lebowski is definitly a massive amount of American influence. Well that is my 2 cents and surely you can take it for what any wants to.
Whether your Chinaman, Brit, or what have you, just know I am racially cool with all that 8) If you want to get into the name calling well chill stop being Quintana Mr Lebowski like. We could all use some serious rug time here and have a J
Peace and may you abide well

forumdude, cckeiser, and the rest of you moderators: this Caesar guy is getting out of hand with the insults and foul language that he directing at me.
Caesar is not the Voice of Dudeism any more than I am, and in fact (to my perception) is behaving more like the Malibu Sheriff or the Eagles-loving cabdriver than like the Dude. In fact, I'd assert that his is actually a bad reflection on the rest of us. I've never pronounced myself to be "the voice of Dudeism".
Maybe that's your new role in your other church... Stand up...give a sermon on Dudeism. Give your pastor an insight into your new religion.

I'd say the same thing to you Icon. Why are you hating on Brits? Americans are not the only ones' who can fully understand the film. You don't even have to see the film to be a Dudeist. It's not about nationalities or other religions or movie references or anything. Just about the message.
I would recommend that you guys stop talking to each other. You guys are just teasing each other because of where you're from and how you worship. Very undude. It's kind of silly and I wish you'd at least take it somewhere else.
Rev Icon, I'm getting the feeling that you haven't fully grasped the message of this place. Might wanna do some more reading. And C dude, that bible verse was pretty aggressive...
I'm not hatin' on Brits, BrotherShamus. All I am saying is that IMO, one cannot fully and truly "get" The Big Lebowski unless one is thoroughly familiarized with my country and our popular culture. If you've never even set foot in the States, then you really do not quite "get it" the way a native-born American would. And if you cannot admit otherwise, then you're just a poser in my book.
This all started on the pendant post where you passed judgement on Icon with a bible quote and you already have said you hate anything to do with such. Your signature says "Love is like a butterfly it goes where it pleases and it pleases where it goes." I see nothing like that here and see this whole thing as very undude. Icon make no more references to Brits or any in the negative, Agreed?! Let us stop this and just relax.

Funny, this reminds me of a saying in Texas. "You can visit all you want but unless you been baptised in Texas water you're not a native"
Basically it means you have to be there several years to be considered native. I done did that y'all. ;) Oh and trust me it is not a religious saying by a long shot. Thanx C Dude, for that flash back. 8)

I mean I'm sensing a pattern with you man. You seem very stubborn with your beliefs, and when some one disagrees with you they're a "poser". It would behoove you to consider that there's more to it than what you perceive as truth. You might be incorrect about some things sometimes. the most powerful thing you can say is "I don't know".
You might also want to consider this saying I've paraphrased just for you: If you see a poser in the morning, you've seen a poser. If you see posers all day, maybe you're the poser.
Food for thought.
Dudes, I am NOT a fundamentalist Bible-banger. I don't even go to church very often, and am not very "religious". I am a Protestant in my theological orientation, I believe that abortion and marijuana should be legal, and that gay people ought to have the right to marry. Christian does not equal "televangelist-loving, Bible-banging bigot" and if someone thinks that it does, then obviously that person does not know much about Christianity. Sheez.

My first Doctor Who is the fourth, Tom Baker and I dig the many inspector shows all my life. I would love to go there and see the many places and to meet Tom Baker (Happy BDay to him ;) ) but may never. However, like you said I would only have a perspective looking in from the outside, so it seems there is agreement. I can trace my lineage back to nobles in England and am of Saxon stock with some Celt mixed in here in the US. I seem myself as a Saxon like many of you, however I am in diaspora and do not think myself proud to get everything over there. Wow I feel all warm inside. Let us just relax and not get to worked up, Cool... May all be at peace and abide well. 8)
If somebody came to me claiming to be a Dudeist, but this person also told me that they had never seen the movie entitled The Big Lebowski, then I would laugh at this person's utter cluelessness and call him a wannabe, a poser who knows nothing of the way of the Dude. Straight up, that would be just goofy in my sight.
Clearly you don't understand irony.....
If someone came on to a site which states that it is "the slowest growing religion in the world" then starts of his posting history by quoting scripture and declaring that he is a Christian. I would call that person a raving nut job at best. Or a bible bashing xenophobic moronic evangelist.
Still. I have seen the movie...once or twice..... :)
Again, who cares. Cut, print, troll. Case closed.
sorry Iconocclesiastes. but i think you asked for it. starting a thread by saying someone who has not been to the states and is a dudeist is a fucking amateur is just way out of line. dudeism is a global, eternal and all-encompassing philosophy. and its connection with The Big Lebowski is allegorical, not canonical. i understand that you may have been meaning it in an ironic fashion, but still. what did you expect? it's clear that you're not altogether understanding what dudeism is all about. i think an apology is in order.
caesar dude's response may have been harsh, but i don't think altogether unjustified. if you don't see how you're rubbing people the wrong way then it might be that you're not of the same mindset as the general dudeocracy.
I will add that it does no one any good by striking back at an insult with such extreme prejudice though. I understand where Caesar is coming from but I wish he wouldn't have made this a national/religious thing as well. We're trying to get away from that shit here. Both Icon and Caesar are espousing an "us vs them" attitude that shouldn't hold any water here. People of all nations and all religions are welcome so long as they don't wear that shit on their sleeves.
Sorry dudes, I was out bowling 2 leagues tonight and I missed yet another dust up.
Thanks for stepping up forumdude. It seems everyone got their Walter up today.

I'd appreciate it if Caesar apologizes to Icon for this. Way out of line. And Icon owes a general apology for his dumb comment about people needing to have visited the US to understand Dudeism.
Come on, guys. You're both better than that.
I think some reflection on "Well, that's just like your opinion, man" is in order here. Caesar dude and Rev. Iconocclesiastes, you dudes are in danger of popping a blood vessel. I have a suggestion; how about exploring subjects you can somewhat agree on, rather than one you both know you don't agree on? After that; grab a lane and roll a few. A few beers, a few burgers; your troubles are over, dudes.
And, THAT is just like MY opinion, man. 8)
Caesar dude, I am gonna take the high road here and offer you an apology for having offended you in any sense or in any way. Let there be peace between us, man. The Dudely one's words are wise ones, and I take them to heart.

in my opinion. That's what the "IMO" stands for. I am entirely open to the idea that I could be dead wrong, and I am learning more and more about Dudeism every day.

Ignorance and bigotry is not excused by the phrase "

I have tried to not take sides here, DB was dealing with the other thread (http://dudeism.com/smf/living-the-life-of-the-dude/dudeist-pendant/15/).
I will not get involved in "who started what first", neither reaction is acceptable, but nothing excuses this type of outburst (and it is not your first).
I cordially suggest you refrain from posting for a while and spend some time actually reading some of the content of the Dudes Paper and this Forum.
The big mistake a lot of people make, and not just you, is that "The Big Lebowski" is holy writ.
It is not.
These misguided people I have referred to previously as "Lebowskiists" (see the Facebook site if this is your idea of Dudeism), just saying "Dude" or "Careful! There is a beverage over here!" does not make you a Dudeist. Nor does just watching the film.

Dudeism is a philosophy and lifestyle inspired by the modern-day fictional character Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski, as portrayed by Jeff Bridges in the Coen Brothers' 1998 film The Big Lebowski. Dudeism's stated primary objective is to promote a modern form of Chinese Taoism, outlined in Tao Te Ching and Laozi (6th century BC), blended with concepts by the Ancient Greek philosopher Epicurus (341-270 BC), and presented in a style as personified by the character of "The Dude". Dudeism has sometimes been regarded as a mock religion, though its founder and many adherents regard it seriously.

I refer you to our websites definition:

While Dudeism in its official form has been organized as a religion only recently, it has existed down through the ages in one form or another. Probably the earliest form of Dudeism was the original form of Chinese Taoism, before it went all weird with magic tricks and body fluids. The originator of Taoism, Lao Tzu, basically said "smoke 'em if you got 'em" and "mellow out, man" although he said this in ancient Chinese so something may have been lost in the translation.
Down through the ages, this "rebel shrug" has fortified many successful creeds – Buddhism, Christianity, Sufism, John Lennonism and Fo'-Shizzle-my-Nizzlism. The idea is this: Life is short and complicated and nobody knows what to do about it. So don't do anything about it. Just take it easy, man. Stop worrying so much whether you'll make it into the finals. Kick back with some friends and some oat soda and whether you roll strikes or gutters, do your best to be true to yourself and others – that is to say, abide.
Incidentally, the term "dude" is commonly agreed to refer to both genders. Most linguists contend that "Dudette" is not in keeping with the parlance of our times.
Dudeism.com (http://dudeism.com/whatisdudeism/)
We have always been a none exclusive, none prescriptive group of individuals.
My own development towards Dudeism is through personal study of Yoga, Buddhism, Zen Buddhism, and Taoism. The addition of Paganism is in my mind no contradiction of the previous traditions and my practice.
From discussions here I realise I was a Dudeist from about the age of eighteen. I did not see the film until later in life, and was only made aware of the concept (like many) through Olivers appearance in that advert for that car company.
Oliver is not Pope, his word is not holy. He is the first to use the label and hold "The Big Lebowski" and the character the Dude up as an example. Much like Buddha under the bodhi tree, Olivers realisation helped many like myself reconcile a life in the mundane world of western consumerism with an attempt at holding some form of spirituality.
I attempted to live my life in certain ways, and find that they do not contradict the attitudes of most here on this forum (and many more I know who do not post here but hold themselves as Dudeists).
I have a number of Dudeist friends, and the UK Dudeist movement continues to grow.
I am a spiritual Pagan Dudeist.
Mine is not the only way.
There are many denominations and creeds represented here, from christian (many differing flavours from strict to lapsed to outright rejectors), through other religions, to atheist, and beyond.
All are Dudeist.
I am also the son of a forces family, and am not alone here with others being ex-forces of various countries.
I also know loss of family and friends to war or even stupid accident (helicopter falling out of the sky).
As a western world, european, and UK citizen I am continually bombarded by adverts, TV (comedy, news, soaps), and film, presenting American "culture" and point of view.
Why am I making this statement?
I am making this statement because I can not in all sincerity put into words how appalled, and disgusted, I am that you can make a statement like this:

...as a general rule of thumb, (and there are a few exceptions to this, most notably Mother Duderior) anybody who claims to be a Dudeist and has never even set foot in the United States, is actually a poser and a f***ing amateur.
And many others you have made on these boards, then think the call for a "Hug" or the use of "IMO" excuses your action.
I, and other admins, have tried to help and guide you but even your answers to some of the most simple inquiries are rude and unhelpful, and you continue to offend and try to push your own agenda.
You have not even noticed that many regular posters are ignoring your threads and posts, or just not engaging at all where you get involved.
Please may I ensure any lurkers or guests viewing this post (and any of the registered users), this is not the opinion of the majority of users here, this is not the point of view of Dudeism, this is one sole bigots opinion.
IMHDO (In My Humble Dudeist Opinion).
For the record: I am no bigot, sir. I admit to having my own cognitive and other biases, but I am certainly not a bigot. I hate nobody, and racially (as well as otherwise) I am very cool. May peace be upon us all.

Let me be perfectly frank: if somebody came to me claiming to be a Dudeist, and this person also told me that he'd never seen
The Big Lebowski (or had only seen it once or twice), then to me that's the same thing as my saying that I am a big fan of
Monty Python's Flying Circus, but also admitting that I'd only seen
The Life of Brian and had never seen a single episode of the TV show. In other words, I'd be a poser who really knew virtually nothing of Monty Python (much less of British culture). Does that make sense?

As I said in the first place: in my opinion. That's what the "IMO" stands for. I am entirely open to the idea that I could be dead wrong, and I am learning more and more about Dudeism every day.
That being said: I apologize for my role in this drama with Caesar. Caesar, I am offering you the olive branch of peace. Accept it if you'd like to, and don't if you don't. But either way, this thing between us is over, as far as I am concerned.
Again: I never meant to pee on anybody's rug.
Yet you continue to do so, with your incessant posting of nonsensical pablum.
I find it quite amusing that you claim to be interested in Dudeism, yet your behavior(that of a child) is far from Dudelike. You're not gonna make any friends here acting the way you do, so why keep on with it??
Here's the thing: I am not here to kiss anybody's ass so that I can become part of a clique of people who think that they are better than I am. Those who want to be friends with me, will, and those who don't, won't. And frankly, Judd, I do not care if you like me or not. Hell, you do not even know me, nor I you. But I'm drinkin'my coffee. Just drinkin' my coffee.
Those who abide do not say what it is to abide; those who say what it is to abide, do not abide. This is my realization, man.
Yet every time someone disagrees with you, you decide they're haters, nihilists, and undude. You're still doing it here, even trying to define what Dudeism itself is.

Same as how I've been called a twunt, a troll, and a Bible-beater simply for being a Christian Dudeist.
It goes both ways, with people around here trying to define what Dudeism is and is not. Am I wrong?
I don't recall anyone else making huge sweeps saying non-Americans can't be Dudeists. Also, saying whose words are not worthy isn't very dude.
Do you really not see how you came in all gung ho and stating what is and is not good or cool? Then making decisions on others' character?
I'm on your side. I know you don't believe it because you dislike me (for nothing I've done against you) but do you really not
see what you've done, also? You apologize but then say we require you to kiss ass because of cliques?
I'm not saying others haven't baited you, but you still have not taken any responsibility for your own actions. It's always someone else doing it.

If I were not taking any responsibility for my own actions, then I would not have apologized to what's-his-name last night and offered him the olive branch of peace and some puffs my my jay. I have gone over the line too, and overreacted to others' hostilities with hostility of my own. Two wrongs do not make a right, I regret the mistakes that I have made here, and am eager to learn from them in moving forward.
Then I was wrong.
Mind if I share your rug for a bit?
For another thing: that's why I took the name "Iconocclesiastes". It's a portmanteau of the words "Iconoclast" and "Ecclesiastes". "Iconoclast" + "Ecclesiastes" = "Iconocclesiastes". Get it?
Dudeism bills itself as "The Religion of The Big Lebowski". All I am saying is (according to that tagline) if one has not even seen, or is barely familiar with, The Big Lebowski, then how can one properly call oneself a Dudeist?
As the Good Book says: all is vanity, and chasing after the wind. So f**k it, dudes. Who wants to join me for some bowling?

Come on with it, friend. Want some of my homemade wine? Or some Glenlivet maybe? I am afraid that I have no vodka...
"What's his name" apologised to you as well...but still you carry on!
What is wrong with you?
For your information....I've seen the film many times and even own a special edition DVD.
Maybe it's your total lack of understanding of the British sense of humour that you are struggling with.

You are "taking this piss", as you Brits would say. Yes, I do understand that much. Come on, Caesar, chill out. Want to get a lane? May I offer you a tot of my Glenlivet?
It's "taking THE piss"
And yes I'll have a swig of that single malt. Much obliged.

Taking the piss, yes. My bad...typo. See, I understand Britishisms better than you may think that I do. Got a jay, man? Want to get a lane, and bowl a frame with me?
I don't smoke and I don't bowl ...sorry.
Or am I taking the piss again? ;)

No hard feelings, dude? (extends hand to shake)
Sure....lets shake hands and draw a line under the whole thing.
I'll even pass you the J.

We're not some very limited film club.
And no you don't have to have seen the film to be a Dudeist.
Actually look at the thread
Great Dudes in History (http://dudeism.com/smf/great-dudes-in-history/)! Most of the people nominated haven't seen the film (Lao Tzu for instance).
The vibe of this thread is very un-dude.
I'm very knowledgeable on the film the Big Lebowski, I've always considered myself to be a chilled out mother fucker and now I'm part of the Church of the Latter Day Dude, which is all about takin' 'er easy and going with the flow.. I've never set foot in USA though (glady).
Dudeism be the name we've given this ethos life, but Dudeism has been around a lot longer than "Dudeism" has been around.
But hey, if you don't think I'm a dude, well, thats just like, ya know, your opinion, man.

Hey slow down there Dude.
Understand some context here, this was some of the last posting by a bit of a problem member we had a while back.
All opinions are valid as long as you're not trying to force them on the rest of us.
Your Dudeism is your Dudeism, mine is mine.
For me it's a convenient label to explain to people who need labels what the synthesis of modern western culture and my own study of Taoism, Zen, and Yoga, had brought me to.
I am however very concerned that people tend to confuse the film with a gospel as apposed to a parable. This member was disrespectful to members of the forum who had not seen the film, or those of us who had not been resident in the US of A.
After much debate (amongst the admins and ForumDude) he was invited (forcibly) to desist from posting (banned).
I am tempted to lock this thread as it seems to have remained a bit toxic (must have a long half life).
Here is what I believe to be the one commandment of Dudeism. There's just one, so it shouldn't be that hard to comprehend. If you were to build a monument outside of a courthouse, it would be very small.
1. Take 'er easy, Dude. Abide.
This isn't rocket science. Take a gander at the homepage of this website, read what Oliver has written about Dudeism, and either roll with it or look for your spiritual fix elsewhere.
If your goal is to argue with others and belittle them, or to complicate Dudeism by trying to redefine it in your own image, or to do anything else that ruins the good buzz we've got going here at our nice, quiet little beach community, look for your spiritual fix elsewhere.
Some guy spent a few months pissing on our rug. He's gone, so let's steam clean this bitch and move on.
