Hey Dude,

Wanted to point you in this direction. The Universal Life Church has a very helpful website with state-by-state laws. I don't see why it wouldn't apply to clergy of the Dudeist variety:

http://www.themonastery.org/wedding-laws/ (http://www.themonastery.org/wedding-laws/)

Thanks MindAbiding dude. I put a tack to this to keep it at the top of the topic!
Good Find dude! 8)

I had started compiling the marriage laws for the 50 states, DC, Puerto Rico, and Guam. Should I continue? Is it worth it? (Serious question.)

I'll have to read through theirs. Mine was with each state or territory getting 1 or 2 pages in a condensed format. If it's not much different, can't be arsed (as a buddy says). :)

Also, mine would tell you exactly where in the books you can find the laws.

I performed a wedding in DC last year for a friend.  Another friend asked me to officiate his wedding in Loudoun County, VA, but as it turns out, they will not acknowledge The Church of the Latter-Day Dude:

Quote"Out-of-State Minister Petition
An Out-of-State Minister petition and $84 filing fee must be submitted to the Circuit Court. The petitioner must also submit their certificate of ordination and proof of his or her position as a minister within the church or religious organization on official church letterhead. We encourage you to petition in the county in which the marriage is taking place. The Loudoun County Circuit Court Judges do not recognize any online ordinations, for example The Universal Life Church per the Attorney General opinion examined in Cramer v Commonwealth."

So much for separation of Church and State... how very undude.

Arbitrary and capricious, too. What, for example, are the judges' positions on ordinations conducted by US Mail, fax, pony express, telegram/telegraph, or smoke signals? At best, this shows them to be a clutch of techno-retarded Luddites.  At worst, their elevation of form over function betrays native fascistic tendencies. As Blackstone once said, "Your Honor, take off your robe and go fist yourself."*

*Blackstone did not say this. Don't cite it to any court, council, administrative committee, or school convocation. Or, if you do, videotape it. Should be interesting.

It's a bigger kick in the yamsack that they allow ANYONE who happens to live in that county to officiate a wedding... no ordination required:

QuoteCivil Celebrant Appointment (Marriage Officiants)
To be a One-Time Ceremony Civil Celebrant, the individual must reside in Loudoun County. A petition must be filed and a $84 filing fee paid to the Circuit Court. The completed petition will be forwarded to a Circuit Court judge for review and approval. Once the order has been approved, the petitioner must post a $500 bond and take an oath before the clerk. Please note that the Loudoun County Circuit Court is no longer accepting petitions for Permanent Civil Celebrants.

I wonder what the deal is with $84... seems like a fairly random fee amount.

Interesting.
Several possibilities arise.
Quote
Properties of the number 84
Symbolism

Ratio of the nirvana world, 80, to the natural law, 4, in the harmonious relationships of the world - 8 + 4 = 12 - according to R. Allendy.

Bible

Age of the prophetess Anna, girl of Phanuel, when she lives to the Temple the child Jesus. (Lk 2,37)

General

According to visions of Ann-Catherine Emmerich, after his temptation in the desert, Jesus is served by 84 angels.

According to the Gospel of Barnabas, chapter 155, only Noah and 83 other persons have been saved during the Flood.

The 84 notes of the chromatic keyboard: 7 ranges including each one 7 simple notes and 5 sharps.

The cycle of the Uranus planet is 84 years.

Occurrence

The number 84 is used 1 time in the Bible.

OR (Most likely) it is the price of some quantity of beer.
Like 10 six packs of a certain brand at $8.40 per sixer.

Although it is interesting that it is the time it takes Uranus to go one orbit.

Louisiana Dude here. With the new SCOTUS ruling, I have a few friends that may want a Dudeist ceremony. Now, according to that link, I need to register with the Clerk of Court. Anyone else from La with experience in this, or any advice?

I'm having some trouble finding out about New York laws...

So I'm on Long Island. I've learned to hold a ceremony in NYC you gotta go all the way there and file or something. So fine, ya know, I just won't do NYC.

But... Well I contacted my County Clerk about registering or the like, and I got told to check with the town clerk. So I checked with the town clerk, they gave me the phone number for the NYS Board Of Health.

Why the board of health? Well dudes, I just don't know.

Suppose I'll give them a call in a day or so, but thus far neither institutions know anything about me having to be on the books anywhere. I actually found some random new article from 2012 that states that online ministers can't even perform in my county (Suffolk), however my relative a few years ago was married by a Universal Church Of Life pastor in Suffolk and their basically the same as us, no?

If anyone knows anything about New York, please let me know.
