Title: Rough day at work
Post by: MindAbiding on August 09, 2013, 06:21:47 PM
Rough day at work today, Dudes. A computer crashed about a week ago and none of the interested parties bothered to inform anyone about it until today. Lost a little data (maybe, the tech guy is working on it). Crazy how the mind works when the shit hits the fan, man -- very uptight, lots of "if only's" and attempts to pin blame on somebody.

Fuck it, man, life goes on. You can't worry about that shit. Right, Dudes? Doing what I can to take my hands off the proverbial wheel, let things settle, and abide.

Right, move on, dude. Today someone futzed with the printer. When I tried to print some very important paperwork, it chewed it up. I went deep into the accounting part, figured I can't break anything that can't be fixed, and found some things no one knew about to retrieve it all.

Told the big man, if anyone asks, I can retrieve it. "How do you figure this shit out?" I play with all the systems and don't give a rat's ass. :)

Rough days are always trying to knock the Dudeness out of alignment. In these cases I ask WWDD? Answer is usually "ah, fuck it."

It is my belief that our society is trained from the time we're little to be good obedient little workers. It seems to be the trend even more today in the schools with all the imaginary diseases that can only be cured by Big Pharma (ADD, ADHD, Ass-burger's Syndrome, etc.). So kudos to you, brother, for shucking this shit and saying "fuck it".

Ass-Burger? Yeah, I know it's spelled Asperger's but they had to know that shit like this would happen.

Thanks for all the support, Dudes. Here's a follow up: Friday (when I wrote the original message), I poured myself a White Russian and took a bath. While soaking, I decided that I had a Schrodinger's Cat kind of situation-- the files were either lost or they weren't, and well, Dude, we just don't know. So I decided I had a choice: I could spend the weekend believing that the data files on that computer (sorry, this sounds so nerdy) were lost and the money we spent was wasted (the Feel Shitty option) or I could spend the weekend believing that we'd be able to recover the files and that nothing is fucked (the Abiding Option). I chose Door Number Two. I'm not saying there weren't any residual bad vibes from time to time this weekend, but I think I contained it for the most part.

End of story: We were able to get an image of the desktop and recover the "money." So, nothing was fucked. Amazing how easy it is to worry about life. Life just goes on, man.

I know that feel bro. But in the end of the day, it happens to all of us.

Look at this (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zTYKmcB26qQ/Ts1Tyf4wjeI/AAAAAAAABrg/15p7wQiAsxQ/s1600/universe.jpg). You are somewhere in there. And think how little our everyday problems mean :)

There was a third option: Dropping the whole thing entirely and just saying "who gives a fuck?!"

Nothing at work is worth losing a weekend over.

Peace dude.

Nice to see that your path is enlighted and dudeist. Days at my work went darker and darker since a year ago. I'm in a pharmaceutical lab, not like those you talked eatlier, but the new head wants to go this way. I'm more than impressed by the speed a good, familly minded enterprise can turn in a gigantic money craving monster. All was going down, I lost faith in my job...

But then I met you guys. I did not recovered the faith in my job, trust me it won't happen... but I'm all "fuck it, dude. let's go bowling" so none of their money minded shit can touch me.

I maintain the computers/network at an accounting firm.  On Friday I spent most of the day there fixing a problem (they have to have LOTS of programs loaded, like QuickBooks 2013 back to something like 1792 or something).  Anyway it was doing the "you can't install because there's a partial installation already done AND you can't uninstall because the other installation never finished".

THEN it says "Your windows profile is corrupt, a new blank profile has been created."  *sigh*

I got done with editing the registry and cleaning the crap out and had the installation going fine.  The last person at the firm had to leave so I said I'd just log in remotely to finish things up.

Got back to my office, can't log in.  WTF?

The restaurant downstairs from the accountant had a problem and blew the power in that part of the building (there's only so much backup one can practically do).

Ok, go in today, when the power came back the server booted into the old broken profile and screwed a few things up.  Back to the registry editor to clean things up... FINALLY got it installed!

In a week or two I install a NAS there, I sure hope that goes smoothly as I transfer a couple of hundred GB of client files over to it.

[ you want to see people panic, have an accounting firm with the network down ]
