Title: Exposed by a bug in Facebook's data archive
Post by: DigitalBuddha on June 24, 2013, 07:58:35 PM
Personal details of about six million people have been inadvertently exposed by a bug in Facebook's data archive.

The bug meant email and telephone numbers were accidentally shared with people who would not otherwise have had access to the information. So far, there was no evidence the data exposed was being exploited for malicious ends, said Facebook.

It said it was "upset and embarrassed" by the bug, which was found by a programmer outside the company.

You must be here to fix the cable - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-23027643 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-23027643)

"I want to respond personally to the outrageous press reports about PRISM:

Facebook is not and has never been part of any program to give the US or any other government direct access to our servers. We have never received a blanket request or court order from any government agency asking for information or metadata in bulk, like the one Verizon reportedly received. And if we did, we would fight it aggressively. We hadn't even heard of PRISM before yesterday.

When governments ask Facebook for data, we review each request carefully to make sure they always follow the correct processes and all applicable laws, and then only provide the information if is required by law. We will continue fighting aggressively to keep your information safe and secure.

We strongly encourage all governments to be much more transparent about all programs aimed at keeping the public safe. It's the only way to protect everyone's civil liberties and create the safe and free society we all want over the long term."

Interpreted... We give the feds anything they ask for, which is everything we have, on everyone who has a Facebook account.

Why do governments ask Facebook for data in the first place? Did governments ask Myspace for data when Myspace was popular? Friendster?

What is this thing with Google, Facebook, Yahoo, etc where they are turning over data to the government(s?)?

I don't get it dude.
What kind of data could possibly come from these social networks that would be relevant to national security and the governments? We just don't know dude.

I forgot to add Microsoft to that list.

That must be exhausting.

Well I'm not privy to all the new shit, but I think you won't find too many terrorists on facebook. Do most terrorists play Farm heroes saga?

But ...by the way facebook is evolving, it seems like it wants to be the new exciting thing in interactive identity software.
Wave of the future, Dude.  100% electronic ID.

Am I wrong ...or just an asshole?

Oh no, wonder how many people saw me whine about having the shingles on FB, damn,  I should have kept my yap shut. I only have 6 or 7  friends - family mostly on there, I thought I was safe,  now the world may know I had a very painful ugly rash, thank god/s (if there are any) I didn't mention I couldn't wear a bra for months after that, of god,,, what did I just say ? Now you all know the deep dark secret, shit! Don't worry world I wasn't contagious unless you were pregnant or never had chicken pox and I mostly stayed in my bungalow because it hurt to wear a blouse, damn it why do I keep over sharing, must shut the hell up!  :-X

Seriously I really hate Fakebook, brings out my inner Walter - too many people over-sharing trying to impress people they are only friends with because they want a large "friend" count. I have one true friend as a friend on there and the rest are family. I only use it to keep an eye on my nieces and nephews,  8) see what my brother and sister are doing (my bro posts lots of cool pictures from bike trips) my one friend rarely posts anything...  I don't use my real name on there because I don't want every person I ever met to be able  to find me, sometimes there are reasons people don't keep in touch, I've had a crazy internet stalker before so I tend to be wary.

To a lot of people it's a numbers game, a pissing contest, my car/dog/cat/kid/spouse/house/boat is better than yours, bah.

Sorry what were we talking about?
