I'v been thinking about how one should approach money (spending it) the Dudely way? In The Big Lebowski I didn't see too much evidence of The Dudes spending habits.. For example, The Dude is an Avid Bowler and it seems he has his own personal bowling ball (don't know if he purchased it, or got it some other way, was given it, won it etc) I would have assumed he had bought the ball since he was such an avid bowler yet he seems to be wearing the free bowling shoes as opposed to owning his own.
I also wonder what sort of spending habits The Dude has regarding food, I'd imagine enjoying decent food is a very Dude thing to do, no?
The main reason I ask is because my main interest is Videography (also my chosen career) and I sometimes spend quite a lot of money on new gear (which I don't use for work, just my own personal projects) Should I try and be minimalist in the type of gear I need? Should I avoid making new purchases if it is not absolutely necessary that I have that item?
What about getting into new hobbies? (for example bowling) should I buy those bowling shoes or be more Dude and just wear the free ones? etc
Thanks
Welcome Le Dude; good to have you abide here, mang. Grab a lane, and oat soda, and roll a few. Bars' over there.

Interesting questions Le Dude. A mon avis dudeism isn't particularly proscriptive or prescriptive. It's more a matter of an energy, a vibe. That vibe flowed through The Dude in a way that matched his particular personality, his place and time. It will almost certainly express itself through you in a different, individual way. What we have are little clues, questions, reminders - but not rules. Buying a pair of bowling shoes or not may not be the real issue. It's more a question of whether one does something in an achieving, uptight way or a relaxed, abiding way.
Very well put BR.
Le Dude, one can only suggest you spend wisely with awareness, buy what truly makes you happy, be frugal but not foolish. It takes me forever to make a purchase, I weigh all the factors I can, I will pay more for more quality and function, but not for status. Particularly when buying tools of my trade, crappy cheap tools do not save money in the long run.
Dudeliness is not what you do, but more how you do it.
One thing we can say; the Dude was not above making a buck or two.........
"What's in it for the dude?"
"I dig the way you do business, Jackie."
"Speaking of which, would it be possible for me to get my twenty grand in cash?"
"Where's the fucking money, you little brat?"
"Twenty grand, man...and a beeper"
As far as the movie goes, and the Dude's attitude to money - well, we can determine two things. One, as DB says above, the Dude was not averse to having some cash - can't add anything to the quotes posted above. But also, he was happy to give whatever he had on him to the nihilists to make an unpleasant situation go away. Easy come, easy go. That's always been my attitude to money. If I've got it, great. I'll use it for shit I like. If I don't have it? Fuck it. I'll figure something out.
You could always practice "The Secret/Science of Getting Rich (http://images.thesecret.tv/The-Science-of-Getting-Rich.pdf)", which I have tried to do for the past few years.
It appears to be a Dudely set of rules, but the principle of "giving more value than you receive" tends to get you stuck working some place for less money than you would get in the rest of the industry (or is that just me).
I still do the visualisations (you know, Scarlett Johansson in my living room, rolling naked in piles of cash with me, but somehow they don't seem to be happening).
One thing I've always wondered about... El Duderino's unemployed, right? How did he get such a nice big house? Just something about the film that doesn't seem to add up.

Sorry, dude, you're cool and all but my brain fritzed when Scarlett Johansson and naked were together and... um... I sent... when... the driveway... What was I talking about?
As a professional, you gotta feed the monkey. Be wise and frugal, but quality counts in your business.
Being Dude is about your outlook, attitude, and approach to everyday problems. Would a Dude scan through 100 ads to compare pennies on the same gear in the name of frugality? Probably not. He might look at 2 or 3 and give up from laziness and just buy what was needed, if the gentle brown-ish coloration had killed the previous version that was working for him.
Just don't confuse philosophy with practicality.
Mmm scarlet johanson. Just caught her in iron man 2 acting rather feisty ;)
Ps did anyone else lose access to the forum the last couple of days?
My point,
Dude,
is why should we settle for twenty grand
when we can keep the entire million.
Am I wrong?
And yes, we'll be near the In and Out Burgers,
Some beers, a few laughs.
Our fucking troubles are over, Dude.
Hello, I can say that you have to cut the wants and focus on the needs. Also, If you're really out of your budget you need to find alternative way to earn extra money and I suggest that you try sports betting. It's quite simple, not time-consuming and interesting. In addition, now there are good opportunities for beginners, for example, sources of information such as Parlay Picks (https://theparlaykings.com/), which are very convenient to use for sports betting.

Pull yourself together, man! haha
