Title: French nomenclature
Post by: Boston Rockbury on February 14, 2013, 01:21:30 AM
Pardon my French here dudes but there are some words the snail-chompers just don't get.

COMMUNITY To you and me I'm guessing that we see the concept in a broadly positive way. I'd have no problem talking about a 'dudeist community', in fact I'm very happy to be part of it. But in France 'communitism' is seen as a dangerous and devisive force which drives a wedge between different groups and threatens the cohesive power of a single state which gives all citizens equal rights and responsibilities. I suspect the sub-text is that they don't want to give the de facto Arab community any more acknowledgement than it already has.

LIBERAL Could be used in a pejorative sense by a conservative but most Americans and Brits probably think of themselves broadly as 'liberal'. In France the sense is very much about being economically liberal. They equate this with a reduction in employees rights and citizens being at the mercy of unfettered greed of a few selfish capitalists.

ANGLO-SAXON To the French this is a term denoting all Americans and Brits and it carries a put-down vibe. Bit culturally inaccurate for those of us who are Celtic, Black, Asian or what have you. But then a lot of the 'Arabs' are actually Berbers.

Arh, I took a big shot you english speakers call a Hangover with crappy wine, and I can't drink it anymore (even the fine ones).

I'm more of a whisky and beer.

Masked Dude, I drank some beers from your country, I don't know if you know this brewery (the Dunham). I had the "bear beer", a dark one, brewed with marple sirup. Felt like Unicorns vomited Heaven in my throat all along I drank'em. another one (with wolf this time) was brewed with cranberry. Not exactly the taste I expected, but fine anyway.
