Title: Shit head musician
Post by: Hominid on December 08, 2012, 05:01:56 PM
Well, I've been a fan of Garnet Rogers for decades - a Canadian folk musician whose brother is the more famous Stan Rogers who passed back in the early eighties. Anyway, I knew this guy was a bit uptight, but it turns out the 2 x 4 up his ass is higher and bigger than I thought.

I live in a little hamlet that has a cafe that brings in live music - some big acts have come through, and musicians actually love the place. So being a photographer, I was shooting some stills of this dude like I've dome for countless other musicians; and as usual - no flash, just autofocus assist (a little red/infra-red LED comes on). Well, after the second last song, he very sternly asks me to stop, embarrassing me, and making himself look kinda wound up in front of 90 people. After the show, he tears a new one in me, forbidding me from ever coming to any of his shows again, that I ruined his night, and ruined it for everyone else who shelled out 25 clams to see him. He wouldn't accept any kins of apology, so I put up my hand, said "Have a life" and walked out.

I'm really glad I didn't buy any of his CDs.  What a fucking looser.

Sounds like he belongs in the square community, and was being very undude. Way too uptight, perhaps he needs to embrace a limber mind? Maybe he hasn't had any coitus, er um, excuse me, I mean Vagina, in many a moon? Oh well, fuck it; life goes on man.

IMHO.

Life does go on. I felt genuinely sad for him - to be trapped in a mindset that is addicted to anger. What a jail sentence.

An old friend of mine was a roadie, a truck driver whose company pulled big name bands around the country. He had a congenital heart condition that surely has killed him by now... life moved on and I went with it, so we lost track of each other before the 1990's barely got up a head of steam. Anyway:

My buddy, knowing he wouldn't reach the age of 40, had an autograph book that was his donation to posterity. Every band he ever pulled was in there, and when he was dragging Bob Dylan's shit around the country he approached the guy for an autograph. He explained what it was for and why, and Dylan said to him, "I don't do autographs, man. I'm a legend". So my friend thanked him and walked away. The remaining crew who witnessed this bullshit got to talking about it, word got around, and someone confronted ole Bob about it. If he didn't sign the book he was going to have to find a new crew... so Dylan apologized and signed the book.

If you hang around the music or movies businesses for a while you'll see some really low shit, but Dylan was lower than the whole lot. That's saying a lot, really. I mean, a dude walks up to you and explains that he's not going to survive the current decade and wants to leave something special behind to be remembered by, and you tell him to fuck off because you're too good to scribble out an autograph for him? Lower than whatever it is that decomposes the rotting carcasses of whatever it is that eats whale shit, that's what that is.

Your uptight square, he was that kind of low. Maybe not pushing the limits, but that kind nevertheless.

That is one real fuckin interestin story RD and I can resonate with your negative vibes towards His Bobfulness with him be'in so inconsiderate 'n all.
On the other hand I know that I've been a total asshole myself plenty of times, so maybe it's a little harsh to define Big Bob or anyone else by one mistake.
I wouldn't be surprised if there are other stories out there where he was cool.

Intentionally being an asshole isn't "making a mistake". Mistakes are sins of omission. When one goes out of their way to be a human paraquat, THAT'S inexcusable until such a person admits fully to their actions and asks forgiveness.

Yeah, i know what you mean dude but i'm thinking that a big problem with a lot of people is a kinda lack of awareness which can come across as intentional assholeness. Loads of stuff I've done I've later thought 'Jesus dude how could I have been such a dick, people must have thought i was a real asshole' but it hasn't really been intentional. I once met Princess Diana and she behaved like a real asshole but i later realised she had a lot on her mind with a divorce coming up and what have you. It's hard not to take things personally though.

It's hard to parse "i don't do autographs, man. I'm a legend." in any other way than pure asshole. Those words cannot come out of your mouth if you've never thought them before.

In my field of endeavor I'm a bit of a minor guru. I've never even thought of speaking words like those.

True, that is a strange thing to say, if those really were his exact words. But then Dylan IS a legend and the bottom line is that if someone asks you to do something you have a right to say 'no'. His genius was not a great singing voice but his creative, idiosyncratic use of language. Little tough to beat him over the head for not responding with the sort of orthodox words you or I might use, when the public have spent decades praising Big Bob for his flow of consciousnes wordsmithery.

*STILL* doesn't excuse him. Plain and simple. I personally know someone who is world-known for his craft - he's the best in the world, but has done ass-hole things that have pissed off me and others. His stature provides NO reason, excuse, or justification for being an ass-hole. There's just no two ways around that... If Dylan said that, he's an ass.

Fame does not excuse assholery in my view, so it's really very easy for me to metaphorically beat Dylan over the head for being a smugly superior piece of shit who so callously dismissed another human being. I have no fucks to give about whether or not a guy wants to sign autographs, but being an asshole of that extraordinary magnitude just isn't excusable. But that's just my opinion...

I can understand people like Dylan not wanting people profiting of his name, what with signed anything being sold all over the net. And they must have heard every excuse there is to get a squiggle on apiece of paper. I can sympathise with both parties in your storey dude.

That's odd - I can see it now.  If I see that again, I'll do a screen shot for you.  There's a one-pixel black outline of the image, and  small icon in the middle... Perhaps Chrome is having a bad day.

When I was training to be a yoga teacher back in London i met this groovy French chick called Agnes on the course. Her sister Helene, was a massive Blob Dylan fan, so she travelled back to France to see him on some sort of French or European tour. Anyhow Blob recognised her from the last time he had played in France, chatted with her and realised she was a real serious fan. So he invited her to join him on the tour bus for the whole tour (he didn't shag her, he was just being nice). It was the best thing that ever happened in that chick's life and was a pure act of spontaneous kindness. That's why I find it a little difficult to see his Bobfullnes as a cunt. But if you look hard enough for the bad in people i guess you'll turn something up. Just not sure how useful that is.

Agnes changed her name to Marianne ( because English people pronounce Agnes 'agnis' rather than 'an-yes)' and became an artist

Not really relevant to the thread but her pictures are intense.

I hear what you're saying - no one is 100% evil. I guess what we do as "judges" is decide where the tipping point is, because life is too complicated, and we need to see things in black and white. We don't have the mental faculties to constantly deal in shades of grey when it comes to forming opinions about this and that person who we'll never meet. So, for me who has never met Bob Dylan, I loose huge respect for him due to his own bad judgement and ego. I guess Agnes thinks the world of him, and would see him as more good than bad.

I see Garnet Rogers as an intensely emotional uptight guy who is largely still the center of his own universe. I needed to rant about his asshole behaviour, and I appreciate the audience (and solidarity). Is he more evil than good? No. I just won't ever buy his music, or go to any of his shows ever again. Not that I hold a grudge, but I don't want his negativity reaching into my life.

When at "the top" and in public view, we're much more accountable for our behaviour, so when these ego centric musicians whom we idol-worship let us down, we feel personally harmed. In the end, it's us who put them there, right?

Just some meandering thoughts I guess...

'Garnet Rogers' that some kinda 'Western' thing?

I ain't never met a lot of famous people but i do have one 'celebrity' story and i don't think I've ever told it before. I used to work with drug addicts; mainly using yoga, herbs and acupuncture to help them clean up. Anyhow one time this really sweet chick came to me desparate to get of heroin. She had a young daughter, and in spite of her addiction, was a great mother. She needed to get into rehab' but i just couldn't find anywhere that would take her and her kid unless she funded it herself (of course she had no money). I really tried, but just ran out of options. So she took things into her own hands. We lived not far from Paul McCartney and she had the balls to climb over his fence and walk right up to his door. By chance he answered in person and his first response was "what are you doing on my property?" But he listened to her story and paid for her and her daughter to spend three months in a groovy rehab. I bumped into her a couple of years later in town and she was clean, happy and doing great.

i met a chick once round at Bob Geldoff's house. she had been doing a bit of singing in his chapel (he owns an old priory in Faversham). anyhow i couldn't get over how groovy it sounded so i went up to her in the garden a bit later and said "the way you sang was just fantastic, no accompanyment, no amplification and your voice was incredible. I've never heard anything like it".  she replied very shyly "tank ya very much, dats very kind." A friend of mine came up to me later and said "d'you know who that was?" I said "Yeah that's the chick who was singing in the chapel" He said " You dick, that's Sinead O'Conner".

Do you not know Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Saviour?  You don't know what you're missing out on!!!  A lifetime of guilt, oppressed feelings, but forgiveness when you diddle with little boys and fuck your daughter and secretary, and most of ALL - you get to shove your opinion down everyone's throat, and tell them they're going to hell if they don't believe EXACTLY what you do! Then there's all that scientific evidence you get to ignore with your new-found arrogant holier-than-thou conceited un-informed opinion. Come, join the club!!!!!!!

Don't go there somebody will tell us about "their personal relationship with God".

Hmmm, rather sounds like this asshole...............

That is a drag, but I'm gonna play Devil's advocate for a second. Did you ask him if it was cool to take photos of him beforehand? Some people are weird about that. I'm a musician myself, and while I don't care if people take photos of me, I'd be a bit miffed if they made money off my image and I didn't see any of it. I'm assuming you were just taking shots for fun though. That said, even if you didn't ask beforehand that's no excuse for his aggression. A simple "no photos please" would've done, and certainly in an adult manner, not trying to make you look like an asshole in front of the entire club.

No, I didn't ask.. someone of his experience and popularity would (should) have it in a waiver, and the club owner said nothing when introducing him. I think that using someone's image for gain is a breach of Canadian copyright law; in the least photographers have to get a model release... so, these shots I take of musicians at this place either just go on Facebook, or my own website as part of my portfolio. Either way, it's free promotion for them essentially.

I'm in no way justifying Mr Rogers behaviour but as a musician myself I have had photographers taking pics of our band without asking then publishing them on Facebook and trying to charge us to remove the watermark, all Im saying is he may be blaming you on past experience.
or he may just be a miserable t**t
