I am what I call a nonner -- I actually have not seen The Big Lebowski.
I know, you're probably shocked. I know the basics of the movie and of The Dude. It's funny because I've seen many movies with the actors of the movie. The odd thing, even without seeing the movie, I still feel I can embrace Dudeism. For us Nonners (with or without a capital letter, who cares) I'm wondering... should I watch the movie?
So I figure I have these options:
- Not see the movie, and be content with being a nonner Dudeist
- See the movie, so I get more of the in jokes
- Wait, and see the movie later after I dude out a bit more
By the way, "nonnner" comes from
non- for not, in case you weren't sure. :)
In Hinduism the gods are seen as a metaphorical vehicle for people who aren't spiritually advanced enough to understand abstract concepts. Yet even the high level yogis still use the mythology to discuss aspects of consciousness. In the same way, TBL is just a vehicle. If you get the point of Dudeism without the movie then you are already a very advanced Dudeist! The main advantage to you would be that you'd get all the inside jokes and references more clearly when we refer to them or utilize parlance from the film. Plus, it's nice to have some bon mots to drive philosophical points home. Sort of how Christians use lines from the bible to underline their ethos while arguing a point. But there are references throughout the canon of world literature that can serve just as well, though other people may not be familiar with them and you'll have to reference your sources when you do so if you want them to know what you're blathering about.
I am about to write an article around the theme of something like "when a star blows up and goes super nova it's doing a very natural dude like thing, it's the star's way of saying "the star abides" or "well, that's just like my opinion, man."
The point is that, if lived in a way that it can be lived, dude should be a natural state of being; hence the Dude's comment "the Dude abides." What else, in reality, could the Dude, or you and I, do? We abide.
......that's just like my opinion, man.

And, the IS also doesn't need anyone to tell anyone that it doesn't need to tell anybody how it works. ;D
........is that some kind of Eastern thing?
That sounds like a line from an 80's song ;)
