So I've noticed a sudden drop off of spam bots and nihilist trolls invading our quiet beach community. Pretty safe assumption that the upgrade has helped. Am I right, or just an asshole? Mark it ten!! ;)(http://dudeism.com/smf/Themes/default/images/post/thumbup.gif)
Sure hope so! Didn't realize there were many before the upgrade. Guess you guys have been silent but deadly. I have installed a few devices to block spam, hope they're working!
Getting close to ironing out all the kinks. I think the last thing I have to figure out is how to modify the mobile theme a bit.
Let me know if you guys have any suggestions. Going to move this topic to the Forum Board.
Which brings up an issue - is it a problem that there are so many posts in General Discussion? Should I create some better categories? Or is it okay that way?
I'm ok with the general discussion section but that's just my opinion. I tend to go there if I can't find or too lazy to look for a specific category.
There's a general discussions board? ???

I was thinking of a category of........
WikiDudia - A Wiki of Dudeist History, New Shit, Great Dudes in History, and What-Have-YouHave some new shit that has come to light about a great dude or some dude history? Wiki it here.
I know we have a Great Dudes in History section, but we don't really post much of the details of a great dude's detailed history "Wiki style," and that section is used mostly for simple nominations for a great dude. Also, what better place to build a Dudeist Wiki of Dudeist history than here?
This is just like my opinion, man. ;)
Dude minds think alike. I've been planning a WikiDudia for Abide University - just trying to find the right software. The one that Wikipedia is open source and available to all but it's kind of complicated. I'd prefer something easy peasy and more intuitive.
I want Abide University to be a crowd sourced project where an entire Dudeist worldview is basically written out. So there would be Dudeist GDIHs, Dudeist philosophies, the Dudeist parts of existing religions, etc. It could grow organically. I just hope it wouldn't be too much work to maintain. With spammers and all. Maybe we could just gather a few qualified editors instead of having it be totally open to every Tom, Dick and Uli.
Maybe in the interim we could get started with some ideas here. There's a wiki mod for SMF (the software this runs on) but I can't seem to find it. Looks promising.

Fuckin' eh, man; the wiki mod sounds like a definite achievement. Yeah, it would need beach community of a few dudes to keep the spammers, trolls and human paraquats at bay, but I think that can be done with a little moderation. Would be dern inneresting to see how it would develop, mang. (http://dudeism.com/smf/Themes/default/images/post/thumbup.gif)
This might be the mod you're looking for, dude? Wiki for SMF?

MediaWiki (what Wikipedia made/uses) has a bit of a learning curve. Once you get over the intricacies and quirks, though, it's easy. The good part is the amount of support and plugins for it.
Talking about "WikiDudia for Abide University"!
I'm still thinking about a conversation of the I-Ching to a more Dudeist theme.
My problem is that I have studied the I-Ching extensively (I have Taoist versions, Buddhist versions, the Wilhelm version with the Confucius annotations, I have modern versions and ancient versions).
Also I look at the positions of lines and then the trigram and then the hexagram.
It's not something that could be simply converted by replacing I-Ching (Taoist fundamentally) terminology for Dudeist terminology.
I did play with converting Yin and Yang into Gutters and Strikes, but this is an over simplification. A bit like saying Yin and Yang represent Female and Male respectively, then saying they represent yielding and firm respectively, the assumption is (wrongly extrapolated) that female is yielding and male is firm, this is not the case. You can have male and yielding attributes, and it's not a genitalia specific definition either, many men have a predominance of Yin tendencies (and not the gay ones), the same vice versa. So it would also be wrong to designate them Dude (Yin yielding) and Un-Dude (Yang Unyielding).
I think this is also part of the process that the originators of the I-Ching went through themselves.
This is why there is a development from two states (Yin and Yang) to four (the two line combination patterns), to eight (the three line combination trigrams) to the six line patterns (hexagrams), each part (one, two, three line combinations) and combination having a meaning and interrelationship (in the eventual six line patterns).
So can we say the four two line patterns are then attributable to Greater Dude (Yin plus Yin), Lesser Dude (Yin plus Yang), Lesser Un-Dude (Yang plus Yin), Greater Un-dude (Yang plus Yang).
Further problem with matching yin with Dude is the association with dark and fecundity, and Yang with light and the sun.
again you don't get plants to grow just by throwing them on the ground they must reside in a nurturing environment (Yin) and receive warmth and energy (Yang)
Doesn't this move further away from a Dudeist idea of "what ever".
I have considered giving each trigram a Dudeist influence (and possibly a character from the film) and looking at how each of them interacts on this basis.
Then you (I) get into complications as to how you create the patterns in the first place.
Personally I have three Chinese brass coins (one of the traditional methods, and easier than the yarrow stalks) to create the Hexagrams with, but I only recently acquired the coins through complete coincidence, I usually just use loose change (brass coins if I can).
I have played with using beer bottle tops (on the basis that many Dudes may not have three coins to rub together but may have three bottle tops) but they have a bias from there shape and weight, thus leading the reading in certain directions, is this important though?
I have played with having a film quote (or Lebowskist) interpretation, a Dudeist, then a Pin Dudeist interpretation of each hexagram.
I know I bring this up every now and again and then it sinks below the water line again, but I am still thinking about it. I have done a bit of work on the graphics already.
Sorry was just thinking.
hey meekon, i looked into this as well but i think dudeifying the i ching would be like squeezing an elephant through a mousehole. lots of blood and lost flesh.
i think what might be better is to write a simplified analysis of the vicissitudes implied by the i ching. for instance i have a book called "the portable dragon" which explains what each hexagram represents and then has quotes from western literature to illuminate each quote. it's a bit heavy going, though.
i really like what ron hogan did with the tao te ching - getting right with the tao. he totally adapted the book into sort of a straight talking streetwise modern argot. maybe the same thing could be done with the i ching.
what i've done with the tao of the dude is something congruent to the portable dragon - a series of essays talking about how lebowski illuminates an issue on our lives and then including a wealth of quotes from a wide range of sources to back up each idea. i wonder if something similar could be done with the i ching. of course it'd be a huge amount of work.
yeah, that smf wiki plugin is not freely available. i asked the author to let me use it for testing purposes but never heard back. it would be a great addition to the forum
however, abide university will have basic but robust wiki functionality built in, though it will be through a wordpress plugin.
wikimedia is powerful and might be worth checking out though. i'm just loath to delve into yet another platform.

Looking into yet another platform sounds exhausting, and might even disqualify you as the laziest man in your neighborhood. ;D
Whatever the plugin is, I'm very much looking forward to Abide University.. sounds like it will be a great addition to the Dudely universe.
