Title: Deeper meaning from the toilet?
Post by: DigitalBuddha on September 27, 2012, 04:11:44 AM
OK, dudes, so we're always looking for deeper meaning in what may seem to be frivolous statements in our favorite movie, The Big Lebowski; you could right a freaking book the size of a 16th century bible on the comments on "the dude abides." This meaning, that meaning, etc., all over the Internet and in print.

So, while downing a beer at the Chinaman's restaurant this evening (P.F. Chang's China Bistro), I started to think if there was any deeper meaning (cuze' the pun) in the Dude's handling the situation of having his head jammed down his toilet when he exclaims "it's down there somewhere, lemme take another look" on the way back up.

Beyond the humor and some surface wit, did the Dude reach into his arsenal of dude-like wisdom and say more here than we have previously understood? If so, what could it have been?

My curiosity was intensified, an hour or so after downing my beers, as I was depositing said beers in the fine urinal of the Dude's room of P.F. Chang's respectively.

Thoughts on this mystery, dudes? Deeper wisdom? :)

I did think of that very phrase when BD was raising the issue of The Dude being a pussy and getting pissed on. It seemed like a courageous piece of ironic wit in a situation in which he was physically but never psychologically over-powered. Much like "I wasn't really listening" to the police chief.

That's what I meant by "the piss washes off" - it wasn't literal.
