Blade Runner
Deckard, a blade runner, has to track down and terminate 4 replicants who hijacked a ship in space and have returned to earth seeking their maker.

Long time fan of the SciFi.
The other day I saw a flick that I had never seen before.
Dark Star. One of the most Bizarre thing I have ever seen.
I wanted to look away but just couldn't. Jaw agape.
It was by John Carpenter the Halloween, The Thing etc...
Basically a bunch of hippies flying around blowing up "unstable" planets with giant nukes.
And the sound track was this old 60's country rock stuff like the Flying Burrito brothers which was strangely incongruous and weirdly effective.
Apparently it's a bit of a cult movie.
Terrible special effects and stuff but it has a very odd trippy feel.
Very highly recommended. It's like the Dude in space sort of.

It's basically John Carpenters Student film project he re-made a bit later when he went pro.
It's one of my favourites, along with "
Silent Running (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067756/)", and one of the influences of the more recent "
Moon (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1182345/)".
It's from a golden period of Sci-Fi (IMHO)
Also try
THX 1138 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066434/) (a similar student style project from George Lucas)
"Now, Bomb..."

Wow, I don't know where you dudes find that stuff! (early Lucas & Carpenter flix). Me, I like the sci fi monsters - Alien, Predator, etc... Then there's T2 of course.

The recent hitch hikers was not too bad. The scene with the spades always cracks me up

Yeah Logan's Run is amazing.
The style. Pure cheese. A product of the age of Disco.
How about Quintet? Another from the same era.
You have to wonder how they convinced Paul Newman to star in that.

Logans run they should just leave alone. It's a beautiful product of it's time.
They don't understand that Sci-Fi is actually about the time it's written/filmed in it's not really an attempt to predict the future.

I've seen Zardoz three times or so over the decades. It's a 70s art science/speculative fiction flick about a dystopic future. There are two groups of people, an uber-advanced small society of immortals that live in "Vortecies" and the dregs hoi polloi stuck in 70s culture. You have to watch it yourselves to learn more. ;D
Here's a teaser: a cult worships a giant flying head that spews firearms and ammo out of its mouth and declares:
"The penis is evil, it shoots seeds of life. The gun is good, it shoots seeds of death."
Zed is the leader of a murderous cult that worships Zardoz.

Back when they really knew how to make cheese (and Jane Fonda was a lot less wrinkly).
Fukin' eh. Great flick - but I don't think I've ever seen it all the way through; just bit and pieces on late night TV. Is it as raunchy as they say? I mean - not to compare it to Flesh Gordon, but I do remember hearing about it being reviewed in Playboy decades ago.

More chiller than sci fi but the Michael Mann film "the keep" from the 80's is one to watch. Nazis, satanic monster, and a Jewish exorcist (of a kind!).
T2 is a fantastic film but I think it is more for the wow factor of the liquid metal guy that totally blow minds when it was released. Terminator is still the best in the franchise for me. 18 words with a heavy Austrian accent and the world was never the same. ;) imdo

Ya, you're right - the eye candy made the film, it was so far advanced for its time. So, perhaps not so much a cult film, but give it time... the special FX will start to look as cheesy as some of that 70's stuff after we all get our holodeck viewing rooms.

They re-released the "Directors Cut" because the DVD copy was crap (very grainy and looked like it was from a bad VHS version, which was almost the case) so they re-mastered it, then they did the big metal box thing with 5-6 versions if you count the Canadian leaked pre-release copy.
"The Final Cut" was the re-visited directors cut, the final statement from Ridley.
Some "Directors Cut2 versions are crap.
See Donny Darko, then watch the directors cut, it's horrible he should have left well alone.
Tarrantino refuses to re-cuts of his films (saying they are all perfect in the version he releases).
Yeah, true, the other versions were pretty bad; one of the worst, IMHDO, was the one with Harrison Ford's over dub more or less narrating the movie as it progressed, his narration was totally unnecessary. All in all, though, Blade Running still remains one of my all time favorite flicks in the Sci-fi milieu. Ridley Scott did a good job in my estimation.

But then what the hell is going on with the Alien vs. Predator films? Is that the same universe as well? I mean Danny Glover, Arnold S. in an early timespace for Blade Runner?

Here we are going to have to agree to disagree, I thought it brought out the "Film Noir" aspect a lot better.
I order the boxed set of all five (six) versions of the film six months before it was relaesed just to get my hands on the version that Ford narrates. i loved it in the cinema then couldn't get a (good) version of it for over twenty years.

Only if you get the boxed set that includes the European release. Again Gilliam fell out with his producers who took the film off him and released a "nicer" ending version in the US becuase they believed thats what the US wanted.
A fantatic piece of work though, especially when he's in the office in the basment fighting his nieghbour for the dek they share through the wall.
and all that retor fifties future tech that the film is littered with.
Gilliam has to be one of my favourite directors.

So was the narration version the "original" version given that it was the cinema release? Can't remember where I got it from, but I had the narration version on VHS and remember thinking that it sounded like a 1940's narration of a radio drama detective story like "Johnny Dollar."
My only reason for not liking it (and it was a minor point for me) was sort of the same affect you get if an actor looks into the camera and says something; it takes away from the realism of the movie, and in other words, it's like too much music, it becomes a distraction. Although Harrison Ford's narration in and of itself is very good.
I thought the narrative was more like an inner monologue rather than trying to explain the story
