I'd say that the biggest problem is that people are lying to themselves.
The most effective lies just reinforce those lies.
The first step is for people to get over themselves and the lies they use to prop up their own nonsense.
Until then people will continue to be spoon fed shit that tastes like sugar.
We are deceived when it comes to our food chain. Unless you grow yer own, we're eating crap that is slowly killing us. Watch "Food Inc." Genetically modified food doesn't require labelling. Modified corn starch and high fructose corn syrup are killers. So is wheat, which was only introduced into our diet 10,000 years ago... it ain't good for us. Not yet anyways.
Pharmaceutical companies want to keep us sick. They will NOT manufacture anything they can't patent and make money from, even if it will cure.
Institutional religions lie, cheat, steal, and oppress in worse ways than any Wall Street banker, all to maintain their empires.
There's no real easy answer to address what lies in the heart of man. Dishonesty and greed for money and power are at the center of our fucked up economy, environment, etc. We can legislate the hell out of all of our financial systems and corporations, but really - until the critical mass of humanity evolves fundamentally - from the inside out - we'll continue to spiral downwards.
