I don't know about this character. I think he's not all that admirable or even Dudeish. I think there's a difference between him and the Dude in TBL. The Dude is true to who he is regardless of what happens and, at heart, he has a depth of compassion for others. The Matthew M. character struck me as someone who refuses mentally to move beyond his high school glory days and who is jealous and resentful of Randal "Pink" Floyd's potential to show him up. The Dude, on the other hand, while obviously shaped by the '60s, isn't stuck in his college days or his SDS days and he shows real concern for people, even Bunny and Mr. Lebowski.
Overall, I think the movie's title (Dazed and Confused), while referring to the Led Zepp song, is also commenting on the foggy moral sensibilities of many of the characters (Randal, the kid who's initiated into the teen scene, Matthew M's character, Ben Affleck's character, etc.) I see Randal's big stand against the coach at the end of the movie as ironic...he thinks he's making some big statement, but he's really condemning himself to the same dead end post-high school life Matthew M's character has sunk into.
That's just, like, you know, my opinion, man.
That said, I think the Matthew M. character is one of the strongest (and best) in the movie.
