To celebrate my 200rh post, good news :)
My family and I will be moving to holland later this year to the lovely city of Nijmegen.
It may have been a bridge too far for the allies but I am confident my dudelyness will pass in a pretty cool place.
Now if i can just find the right place for the rug ...
Now that is cool.....it's so much nicer than Milngavie I assure you.
I used to hang out there when I was stationed in Germany...Overloon is another dudely town..
I'm pleased for you dude.
Peace
Looks like an awesome place to abide, dude! A local dudetopia. (http://dudeism.com/smf/Themes/classic/images/post/thumbup.gif)

My Dad was airforce, when he was posted to Wildenrath we lived on the Dutch German border in Leik near Heinzberg.
We used to go shopping on the weekends in Holland.
I also had a few very good Dutch friends at Uni, unfortunately I've lost contact with most of them.

If I were to move to Europe, Holland would be a place I would dig living in. Great culture! I'm really just a transplanted European (like many Americans). My background is British (both parents born there and went through the London blitz), I was born on this side of the "pond." I have relatives all over England. It's in my blood, I love a good ale at a pub! We have one in Santa Monica, CA; The King's Head Pub (a favorite hangout)..... http://www.yeoldekingshead.com/

I hear they got some killer weed.
Cmon .... like that wasn't the first thing that came to everybody's mind.

I give the traditional british pub about another five to ten years before it's gone.
Big national chains greed has been slowly killing it but the new drink legislation will cause it a big problem (minimum price per unit), and wont solve the culture of binge drinking. People will do what they have always done in these situations, turn to illegal cheaper sources.

Are they increasing the price so people won't drink? The dipshits who thought of that need to take a hint, we tried it in the 20's; "prohibition," was a massive disaster and more or less gave us modern organized crime. As if a government can tell a people they can't have a drink (or smoke, for that matter)! Really stupid! LOL, we did anyway. State after state in the US are passing laws legalizing hemp. The feds are having a shit fit over it!

They're doing it so the "poorer" won't drink. It's aimed at the lower social class of people who buy cider at 3 pounds a plastic bottle...low in price but high in alcoholic content....as Meekon says it won't stop a thing....the black market in tobacco is as high as it's ever been and alcohol can be brought in by the van load from the continent...then sold on cheaply....it's a crock of shit!
Sales of home brew kits will sore and people will brew there own and sell it....it won't change anything...
Prohibition for the poor! :)

Just a quick update on preparations for the move.
I am loath to get rid of my VHS collection and am trying to copy them to the computer but not having a lot of luck with the cheap option using an easycap USB stick. First it didn't work with the new 64 bit laptop and now with new drivers I get no sound and the video rate is shit. Anyone got any suggestions?
On a better note, we are heading across for a long weekend next week to go house hunting. The Netherlands is not a cheap place to buy or rent though, even with the exchange rate improving recently!
Found out about Dudeism today and got ordained immediately. I live in schiedam (Rotterdam), welcome to the Low Countries Milnie. Nijmegen is a beautiful city, and probably the oldest one in The Netherlands (there's a strife between Nijmegen, Maastricht and Voorburg which one is the oldest). If you have any questions about (life in) NL, don't hesitate to contact me.
Much obliged pater dude :)
Welcome to our beach community. Pull up a rug and grab a cold one

Just a quick note on our march towards the Netherlands. My special lady became my wife yesterday. Civil ceremony as the dudely way is not recognised in Scotland but I spread the good word anyway: "let's get pissed!" (thank you mike Myers). We had hired a country house for privacy and the day was fantastic. 26 deg and clear skys didn't hurt either :)
Awww Congratulations mate to you and your very special lady friend. :) :)
Peace and dudely blessings to you both.

That is just like their opinion, man. Why should you pick up the tab for improvements before you were there? This aggression will not stand!
Unsurprising they haven't got a new tenant. We have gone back and offered to pay if they drop the rent or we will accept a slightly higher rent and they can get their money back over time. Just waiting to hear back but not holding breath.
Interesting.
In my experience, having worked with some Dutch folks in the Middle East. they do tend to drive a hard bargain.... They used to give the Arabs a lesson in bartering!! ;)
Stick to your guns mate...do they know you're Scottish? This could be like two glaciers coming together!! :)

Yeah, someone flew the plane into the mountain on this one and are now refusing to accept they fucked up

Well dudes, down to the wire now. Getting things packed for the move on Friday. Just taking the essentials now and will follow up with everything else once the house here is sold. Adhering to a strict diet of oat sodas and js to keep limber.
Well dudes, first post from holland and it is frikin hot. Due to be 37 tomorrow. Will take the mini me's to the beach I think then just drive around with the air con full blast when it gets too hot.
Time to grab an out soda, spark a j, and let a nice cool bath soak out the stress of driving for almost 13 hours to get here.
Cheers everybody :)

Good news - the weed pass (weitpas in freeky deeky dutch) has not reached nijmegen yet :) joy so I have finally paid a visit to one of the many coffeeshops in this fine city and replenished my stocks. bit more expensive than the home grown i have been use to buying in the uk but when you can just walk into somewhere and get it and not be arrested when you walk out, its worth it. you can legally (sic) grow your own here but i cant be arsed with that.
our home in the UK looks like its sold after being on the market for just 3 weeks. either we have a very nice house or we are being screwed by the bloody home report valuation. i think a little from column a and a lot from column b!
if the good lady can just get a job now, we can buy something here and settle in properly. ;)

Years ago I grew some in my basement with a big ole 1000 watt metal halide grow light.
I did not picture myself as having a green thumb.
But honestly it is addictive. I just loved checking on "my ladies" each day and watching them grow big sticky nugs.
Now I live a more responsible life and don't smoke or grow.
I get piss tested too often as a Consultant. When you change jobs often it's a fact of life.
A lot of places require it now adays along with a background check.
Maybe someday the paraquats in washinton will actually pull the giant stick out of their asses and just get over it and legalize it.
I envy you over there.
Must be nice.
yeah dude, i use to grow my own then the kids came along and i was banned from growing any more by my special lady.
it is very addictive to grow your own plants, as you say, you can get obsessed watching them grow day by day.
i use to grow mine in a mini greenhouse in a cupboard wired with multi low power lights and wrapped in tinfoil with fan and lights on timers.
a friend of mine still grows and uses an old PC tower case fitted out with hydroponics. its a pretty cool little system and he gets a good yield, considering.

I had lots of room for them to stretch out. A separate room in the basement under padlock no windows.
I had a homemade box for clones and such which grow fine under 24 hour flourescent lights.
The main was 12 and 12 under a big 1000 watt grow lamp. Man they used to grow like inches per day.
I used to get cola's as big as my forearm.
Sticky white crystals. Makes my mouth water just thinking about it.
Damn I wish I could still grow weed!

Well, time for an update. The weed pass has made it to Nijmegen! Not that I was stopped when I bought some green earlier today :) the council will apparently revoke it to ensure tourists do not have to buy on the street an to keep the tax rolling in no doubt. Common sense prevails

Another update dudes if that's cool:
Just back in our villa after driving to Scotland and back with a van to empty the house. We have a house rented in the small village next to Nijmegen and it is now full of boxes. Will complete the move in the next few days, the house is suppose to sell on Wednesday Then that's us fully living in holland :)
Second, some places in Nijmegen are asking for id when buying weed. A couple of Indian or Pakistanis were carded befor me in the que but when it was my turn they didn't bother so not sure if there are issues with certain minorities or if they knew I was for it?

Where have all the dudes gone?
Girls have picked them every one

When will they ever learn?
Yeah, a lot of great dudes have come and gone. But, I do have an Idea; How about we gather together all of the email addresses of past dudes and anyone who at least posted maybe 5 posts and send out an email blast asking them to come back and abide with some dude-like fellowship? I say 5 posts or more because trolls and spammers don't usually post beyond 3 or 4 in most cases who may be in the list.
Maybe Forumdude could compile an email database and raddle their pads a little? Fuckin' eh, might work.
Why?
I don't understand!
The last thing I would ever want as a dude trying to slack my way through the world is just one more email that might stress me out, telling me that I've been a slacker!
No thanks!
Please take me of that data base! :(
Hey Milnie,
Just a thought....and no more than that at the moment.
I have several friends in Holland...who have several friends in Holland...who know folks in the Netherlands (that's a joke for our American geographically challenged friends!)
Dunno (or can't remember what line of business you're in) but I could maybe put you in touch with one or two of them .
One of my mates from 25 years ago is a English, when we were in Germany he started seeing a girly from over the border....we still call him Dutch. I've personally never worked it out! :)
Anyhoo give me a shout if you think it might help.
Oh and how's the language coming on? The Cloggies must be bewildered by your strange accent! (probably for the first time since they met my Welsh mate! :)
Peace dude.

Just found the first down side of living in holland: the Mosquitos are bloody huge. Scotland started getting them a few years ago but they are only 3 or 4 mm long, here they are about half an inch! Bloody near messed myself when one landed on my leg earlier
Howdy!
Long time dude, recently ordained thought this would be a good thread to introduce myself!
Yeah the mosquitoes can be a real pain ( been in NL for 12 years )- they always appear when you're sleeping i've been trying to find out where they sleep and turn the tables on them but i usually give up after a few minutes and just get me some green relief, apparently a citrus scented shampoo/shower gel keeps them at bay.
Wait till i gets really hot and you encounter the horse flies! :)
