Have been seeing this a lot more lately. I was having a conversation with the pastor of the local Unitarian/Universalist church and it was interesting to hear him talk about how most of these guys/gals come out of the same seminary schools where they teach them to question the Bible and such but then they teach the opposite...I mean, it was not a Catholic seminary and who knows if he was telling the truth, but interesting nonetheless.
"When you're born again you're still a child!"
I've avoided listening to this until now.
Very Freudian in his views (though Freud is mostly discredited his, Freud's, views on god and religion are at least interesting).
Without the stick whats the point of the peasants paying their tithe?
Meekon, what have you avoided listening to until now?
The bit about being born again keeping you in a perpetual state of child-like obedience?
And why have you avoided it?
I think he meant the whole video. I also neglected to watch it until now. Nice one.
Wasn't it in Bill Maher's Religulous where he interviewed some priest at the Vatican who said that most of the priests there understood that the Bible was an allegory, not meant to be taken literally. It seems it's only the poor peasants of the world (and Americans of all socio-economic classes) who believe heaven and hell are real, and that Jesus will get you a free ticket to the show if you like his Facebook page in the sky.
What's more amazing is that more earnest, honest and selfless priests don't go on the record and admit this, like this guy. The question is really whether they believe the dogma to be literally true or whether they are afraid of losing their grip on their subjects. I don't know which one is more disturbing.
One thing to note is that this guy is an Episcopalian. Aren't they almost as liberal-minded as the Unitarian Universalists? In the same way that Ben Stiller joked that reform Jews were basically just Christians with curly hair, are Episcopalians (and Unitarians and Quakers) just Agnostics who just really need a place to hang out?
Wow! I think this Padre may have been reading Richard Bach.

I focused in on that quote because in the Church of New-Age Psycho-Babble, that I belong to, we believe that it is necessary to re-enter a child-like stage of trust and openness, where one can re-experience being loved regardless of one's achievements or qualities. In so doing one under-cuts the defenses and fears that build up and inhibit us from expressing our true dude-nature. This of course would be open to abuse as one must accept a very vulnerable state, but there are a few people around who can be trusted.
Follow the money dude.

Churches become corrupted (by money, power, fear and ignorance) but perhaps there was an original spiritual insight behind many religious traditions which was a force for good before it became degraded and packaged up with fear and control. This particular priest-dude seems to be trying to reconnect with that native energy.
