One year ago, I was diagnosed with a neurological disorder. In particular, it is a thought disorder: my thoughts do not connect one to another, I often forget where I am or why I went somewhere. I do not remember the names of my close friends, familiar places, or even details about my own life. It is a permanent condition that will only get worse as I age--and I am a young guy. I go to a counselor on a regular basis. She has commented on how well I am doing--my attitude is unlike any she has seen in patients with this disorder. She asked me what kept me so motivated and positive in the face of this rather alarming condition. Without a thought I told her, "Yeah, well, The Dude Abides." It took her a second to grasp it, but she told me it was the best answer she ever heard, and that she loved that word--abides. As a Dudeist Priest, I find this statement runs deep into my psyche, beyond my limitations, to the true heart of what it means to practice Dudeism: it offers the chance to overcome very real problems with the confidence only a White Russian and an open bowling lane can offer--even if I can't recall why I am drinking a white Russian or how I got the the lane it doesn't matter. Because the Dude Abides all things.
I'm not a doctor, but it seems to me that the dudeist life style of relaxed slacking and takin' er' easy would definitely help a person no matter if life throws you strikes or gutter balls. Hell, I think a lot of people would increase their health no matter what level it was at with some genuine slacking.
