Title: Documentary
Post by: TheFarnhamDude on February 22, 2012, 07:52:55 AM
Good day to you fellow Dudes. I'm writing to see if there are any Dudeists who would want to give their view on why the teachings of The Dude and The Big Lebowski made sense for you and not more traditional and established religions. Your views are very much appreciated and will be included in a short documentary looking into Religions in the modern day world and their relevance today. You can reply on here or drop me an email at harrmabb316@hotmail.co.uk

Also if you would like to be in the documentary to give your view on camera and live in the UK we can come and film you, if not you can record yourselves and post the video online if you wish. We will of course contact you if we plan to use your footage in the final film.

More info no problem.

It is for a short 10-15 documentary and we are investigating the dwindling numbers for other religions, what methods are they taking to remain relevant in today's society, in order to keep the numbers up by attracting younger members; i.e using technology and accessible forms of media to spread their messages like the internet and music groups. We are also looking at the rise of alternate followings cropping up all over the world as opposed to the more established and mainstream religions, Dudeism we saw as one of these alternative, having parallel philosophies but having being more relaxed and grounded in modern times: The Bible is over 2000 years old, The Big Lebowski only 14 years.

What question we are composing to you Dudes is: why Dudeism? Why it works for you and not Christianity or Buddhism to name a few?

Firstly I think you have to understand that for a number of us Dudeism is a modern expression of Taoism in the 21st century.

I personally would be interested in talking to you, and we may be able to arrange a couple of the others in the Hampshire area.

Our main concern is misrepresentation. There have been previous documentaries that have not painted individuals (who claim to be dudeist) in a good light. Eventually just portraying them as gun wielding dope heads with no real point of reference. Very upsetting to the more serious of us here.

Another point that needs discussing is the difference between the Lebowskiist and the Dudueist line. The dudeist group on Face book is the Lebowskiist approach, too much quoting the original film with no source of reference. Whilst here we are more concerned with actually communicating and defining through discussion what we consider "Being Dudeist" is. If you spend some time looking around this forum you will find some very committed individuals who have very serious commitment to this forum, and idea of Dudeism.

Our approach to the documentary is completely objective; my director Xander would rather show Dudeism in a better light. Our goal is mainly exploring the existence of these followings in light of more traditional religions modernising themselves to keep in competition.

I am glad you mentioned Dudeism being a modern representation of Taoist ideas because this is relevant to what we aim to explore about modernising religions, and the difference between what came from The Big Lebowski and Dudeist ideas in general. I personally recently started following the ideas of Dudeism and had awareness it?s grounded into other philosophies.

I think the case is we took the Taoist line not so much that we are a branch of Taoism, but more of a modern interpretation.

I am interested in talking to you, but fifteen minutes is a bit short to cover everything.

Greetings FarnhamDude!

I wrote before...only half in jest...that I prefer Dudeism over Buddhism because Dudeism has lower standards and even lower expectations. I like that in a religion/philosophy/way of life or what have you.
When I speak of The Dude character from The Big Lebowski I do so mostly tongue in cheek but when I talk about the essence of what that fictional character portrays I do so with a little more sincerity. We are speaking of a bit of Taoism here...at least the parts that make sense to us in a modern day environment. The middle way...the way of takin' er easy and trying to abide in a world of Reactionaries, Human Paraquats and religious fanatics.
Yes we know The Dude is a fictional character, but then All religions are founded on Fictional Characters...and all religions with a deity and dogma turn out to be just a load of shite...and very dangerous...they hang Love on the door, but preach Hate to the pews.
For me; after working through the frickin mess that substitutes for Truth out there and finding none at all, I came to the conclusion that the only purpose of Life was to Live it...Dudeism came as a nice comfortable refuge and a very good fit with my Do No Harm philosophy. You can not do much harm if you're just hanging out taken it easy trying to abide the best you can.
For me, Dudeism is a refuge from all the Pretentious Nonsense and  Insanity out there. I find Dudeism comfortable and cozy...like The Dude's sweater.

Pull up a rug dude and stick around for awhile...and find out for yourself what Dudeism is all about. 8)

Well Mark has e-mailed me back, I am also talking to Rev Klaus and Rev Ed about our annual UK South Coast Dudeist League meeting which we hope to achieve next month.

Mark has suggested he and his director would like to talk by phone initially, and also perhaps attend the South Coast Chapter meet.

Keep tuned to this station to hear more exciting updates.

Will give more updates then.

We've amended the documentary slightly and now we're focusing soley on Dudeism, my director is looking to find out more and he is looking to become a Dudeist.

Meekon5 has been very kind to let us meet him and share his experience with Dudeism, is there anyone else who is on the other side of things? He brought up the Dudeist and Lebowskiist line and we would very much be interested to speak to anyone who does dress up like the Dude and quotes the film; its very clear people have their own approaches to it and we want to be able to investigate both sides.

Has anyone talked with Ollie (The Dudely Lama) yet? center@dudeism.com
He started this whole thing...I think someone should at least talk to him. 8)

Becoming a Dudeist is easy...if you think you're a Dudeist...you are probably a Dudeist. Becoming an Ordained Dudeist Priest is a little bit harder...You gotta fill out the the form dude: http://dudeism.com/ordination/

Though Ollie's point of view is always valued lets not forget he's not the Pope (as in he and he alone has direct communication with the Dude).

And I know Ollie would be the first person to admit he doesn't have all the answers just because he was the first to coin the term Dudeist. There were a lot of us that were living the Dudeist life before the phrase occurred to Ollie (Including Ollie himself).

As I've said before Dudeist is the label for those in my life (who think they need to label things) to use to label me just to keep them quiet.

The guys here only have fifteen minutes to fill, and the scope of the documentary was originally to cover a number of "Nouveau-religious" points of view and compare them, then through the natural process of evolution it has been narrowed down to just focusing on Dudeism.

Be assured I am not representing myself as the one true viewpoint on Dudeism, everything has to be IMDO (in my dudeist opinion).

Your best bet is to talk to the facebook site for Lebowskiist's.

i've been in touch with them and am happy to participate. i'm also happy that upstanding dudeists like meekon are in the UK for them to interview. it's true that i'm not the pope. i'm more of the editorial-we-in-chief. i'm happy to delegate as much as i can! but even delegating can sometimes be hard work. i'm happy for anyone to take on any spreading of the dude word, even if i don't necessarily agree with their take on dudeism. i'd like to think that like a good living system, dudeism is self-correcting. am i wrong?

Just like my opinion, man; but I would put this urban achievement Documentary on YouTube and embed it on the Dudeism main site. It's a beginning history of "dudes of Dudeism" for history to record.

.....that's my thought for the day, I'm gettin' lane. Anyone want to roll a few?

We were going to meet up today, but one of the team has ben struck ill (nothing too serious but still inconvenient), so we're going to re-arrange for later.

there's a new video out where i foolishly got drunk and got talked into wearing a wig (i had short hair at the time) to look more dude-like. i'm going to have to post an article at the dudespaper explaining how it went down. i look like i'm taking the piss out of the whole thing. goddamn white russians in the middle of the day.
