Title: Welcome to the "Great Dudes in History" Forum
Post by: forumdude on February 26, 2007, 05:02:07 AM
Hey all you great dudes out there, tell us who you think should make it to the finals. The Great Dudes in History Page (http://www.dudeism.com/greatdudes.html) finals, that is. If you feel we've made a big boo boo by leaving out any truly great historical and contemporary dudes, nominate them here and we'll consider if he's a good man (or woman) and thurrah.

I nominate The Fab Four (The Beatles!) were great dudes. They influenced a generation and still are influencing young folks with their music of peace and love.
Think about it. All you need is love... there is enough money, food, etc on this planet to go around. It's a matter of distribution. When there is love, there is sharing and caring.
John Lennon is as alive today in his music as he was 40 years ago in The Beatles.
"I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round
I really love to watch them roll
No longer riding on the merry-go-round
I just had to let it go"
Sounds a bit dudeism to me.
Do we have to write up the profile for those we nominate if they get chosen, or do you?

Clint Eastwood - okay, so he's a Republican but I don't think you could meet anyone more laid back.

Matthew MacConaghey - by virtue of the fact that he was arrested for playing the bongo drums at 3am while naked and stoned out of his face. I mean, cool. What a Dude!

Jesus - Okay, so he didn't toke. But he did have long hair and a beard, and he had a tendency to abide.

clint eastwood is pretty dudeish in real life. don't know if he qualifies. maybe after he's dead (not face down in the muck, hopefully). matt mc is pretty dudeish considering he's a big hollywood actor. not a great dude in history, but definitely a dude. jesus is already listed. keep em coming.

Rob Van Dam

The best of the three is Scorsese's "Life Lessons", about an artist (played by Nick Nolte) who uses his hyper-success to lure beautiful, young, aspiring artists to serve as his assistant/lovers. It's an astute portrait of the nature of the New York art world..
The real dude is Nick Nolte in New York Stories...

Ciao I'm a dude from Ostia the Rome's beach!!

See you later in Italy...

Hi Dudes

great site thank you.

But you is missing some very BIG dudes like

Cheech & Chong  (Cheech Marin & Tommy Chong)

Tommy Chong went to prison in real life to save his son and wife from going in his place (it was about selling glass bongs over US borders)

Quote:-
"In 2003, Chong was targeted by two American investigations code-named Operation Pipe Dreams and Operation Headhunter, which sought out businesses selling drug paraphernalia, mostly water pipes. He was charged for his part in financing and promoting Chong Glass/Nice Dreams, a company started by his son Paris. Chong agreed to plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute drug paraphernalia in exchange for non-prosecution of wife, Shelby, and his son."

Quote:-
"Marijuana

Chong has an unabashed love of marijuana. He used to say "I get high constantly! If you smoke pot, eat well and work out, I guarantee you'll live forever." Chong is also a marijuana activist and is a supporter of marijuana legalization & medical use of marijuana."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_Chong

you must add at least tommy to your dude list imo one of the few Real dudes of the 20th century even picked on by the US goverment ;)

keep up the good work

In fact man, the dude  makes a "wink" to Cheech & Chong, you know, like in "Up in smoke", the creedence-bear-joint-accident part man.
They're pacifist just like he.

No mention of Marcel Duchamp as a great Dude in history?  After giving up on painting, this brilliant Dadaist-Surrealist invented the Readymade: find a banal/utilitarian everyday object, take it out of context, call it art, sell it, get paid for it.  Great Duchamp quote: "My capital is time."  I mean ... Joni Mitchell?!  Duchamp's a much more obvious choice.

Another great Dude: J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr.  J virtually invented the '90s Slacker ethos.  If J ain't a major Dude, this Dude doesn't know who is.

Love and sweet dreams to everyone ...

I'd like to nominate Harris K. Telemacher as an honorary dude.  He's the wacky weatherman in the movie L.A. Story.  He spends his spare time rollerskating through the metropolitan museum of art in Los Angeles but his thinking has gotten to be very uptight. (He's had seven heart attacks- all imagined which is to say he was very unhappy but didn't know it because he was so happy all the time.)  But then  a freeway signpost speaks to him and helps him to find abiding happiness in the form of a special lady friend played by Victoria Tennant.  (Harris is played by Steve Martin who also wrote the script.)

L.A. Story is deeply mystical and is the only other movie in addition to The Big Lebowski
the Tiki Dude can watch over and over and never grow tired of.  It too has generated a bit of a cult following- or so I've been told.

I dont know if animals can be dudeists but if they can i think Balloo the bear should be nominated man. Oh yeah snoopy is too. Balloo the bear is from Jungle Book (1960 something film and book). He's a bear that preaches about
"bear (bare) necessities". He stays in the forest and sleeps under trees and scratches his back occassionally. He floats around on a river and picks fruit from the forest.
His complete theme -
Look for the, bear (bare) necessities,
The simple bear necessities,
forget about your worries and your strife
I need the, bear necessities,
Of mother natures recipes,
just the bear necessities of life
yeah man.

I think Balloo is a prime animal candidate..if you;re not into the whole brevity thing.

Second is a pair - calvin and hobbes. From the popular comic strip. Calvin is as spaced out as any dude. Hobbes likes to sunbathe. calvin is a 100% pacifist, as this can be seen when the bully moe beats him up and he doesnt do much. Hobes likes tuna sandwiches and likes to think hes real. Calvin spends large amounts of time in front of the tv and detests sports and conformity. Prime dude candidates i think,. But thats just like my opinion man,. 6 year olds dude.

Tommy chong. Nuff said. Especially him as Leo. Far out

Dave brubeck. Jazz maestro. Will play with just about anybody on stage. Hes 87 years old and thats due tot he fact that he never pushed himself in life, just went with the flow. Take 5 is the most chilled out duder song ever *(besides the creedence). Rumour has it that he ate food, smoked a lot of reefer and had a few beers. Dont know whether he had caucasians.

Though he is already on the list, Mahatma Gandhi, the father of my great country. he did not watch his buddies die face down in the sand.

P.G Wodehouse's characters Bertie and Wooster. Bertie eats big breakfasts and smokes cigarettes. He half heartedly chases tails and thats when his butler Jeeves helps him out. All he says is "Yes sir" and "no sir" and " I wouldnt agree sir". He's also very very funny- like our modern day dude. Good candidate. He also quit his white collar conformity job to start writing...quarter-time. Died at ripe age of 93. Thats a bummer man. Mind if i do a j ? Im out of suggestions.

I think Thomas Pynchon should make it.  Thre main qualifications:  1. Admitted to using drugs while writing some of "Gravity's Rainbow".  2.  Shuns public exposure and 3, related to 2, Hired Prof. Irwin Corey to accept the National Book Award for him for Gravity's Rainbow.

While I am at it I think Irwin Corey, The Worlds Foremost Authority should be one too.  Just for his speech in accepting the prize for Pynchon.  Read it here:

I would like to nominate Rob Brezsny as one great contemporary Dude.  His poetic, funky astrological columns and visions of PRONOIA (opposite of paranoia) ways of loving the world & peace for all are something we desperately need in this screwy world.  How can you not love a man that urges us all to "liberate your imagination"?

In his own words:

WHAT IS PRONOIA

DEFINITION: Pronoia is the antidote for paranoia. It's the understanding that the universe is fundamentally friendly. It's a mode of training your senses and intellect so you're able to perceive the fact that life always gives you exactly what you need, exactly when you need it.

HYPOTHESES: Evil is boring. Cynicism is idiotic. Fear is a bad habit. Despair is lazy. Joy is fascinating. Love is an act of heroic genius. Pleasure is our birthright.

PROCEDURE: Act as if the universe is a prodigious miracle created for your amusement and illumination. Assume that secret helpers are working behind the scenes to assist you in turning into the gorgeous masterpiece you were born to be. Join the conspiracy to shower all of creation with blessings.

DISCLAIMER: The material in PRONOIA may be too intense and controversial for some readers. It contains graphic scenes of peace, love, joy, passion, reverence, splendor, and understanding. You should therefore proceed with caution if you are a jaded hipster who is suspicious of feeling healthy and happy. Ask yourself: "Am I ready to stop equating cynicism with insight? Do I dare take the risk that exposing myself to uplifting entertainment might dull my intelligence? If you doubt your ability to handle relaxing breakthroughs, you should stop reading now.

Check him out, he's my favorite funky dude: http://www.freewillastrology.com/

I also *absolutely* second the nominees of George Carlin & Mitch Hedberg!  (Btw, I'm so jazzed to find this site & forums...can't wait to become a fully ordained dude!)

there are too many posts here for me to take the time to check, but i bet somebody already mentioned him:
Bob Dylan
his songs surrounded many of the topics covered in Dudeism. He also was never afraid to do his own thing. He constantly revisited his world philosophies and never focused his career around what his fans liked, but what he was into at the time.  My current favorite quote of his is "Nietzsche didn't wear an umpire's suit." In my opinion a prototypical Dudeism quote.
He definitely has a place among the great dudes in history.

(And just in case anybody tries to nominate Yoda, "Try not.  Do or do not.  There is no try" is a very UNDUDE thing to say.  A Dude would say, "Try or try not, dude.  Whatever's good for you.")

Hold everything...I like Tony Bourdain, I watch his show, and I've read his book, but I don't know if he's a Dude.

He holds grudges, he is too quick to put somebody down, he has a rather high opinion of himself, and he can be rather spiteful at times.

Far more Walter than Dude, and a bit more Uli than Walter.

He lives a Dude lifestyle, but he probabgly isn't a Dude.

I too read his books.  He also does mob crime type books, which kinda makes him like the Cohen brothers but thats not my point.  I will have say that yes he can be undude at times.  I refer to his writing about working at Le Halles and he can be an asshole, but I do especially love When he tells the twink waiter that he as his sou chef will poke two holes in his neck then bump dicks in the middle.  It is very undude but wow what an attention getter.  But you have to give him credit he has made peace with Emeril.  Oh I'm ramblin again.

This is just like, my opinion, but I believe you have overlooked one of the most dudely thinkers in philosophy:Epictetus the Stoic. Basically, he said that the world is a crazy place, and that there are always going to be assholes. The only choice you have is how you react to it; do you jump out of a moving car with a uzi and make things drastically worse, or do you accept you fate, knowing that eventually the person who stole your new rug will either get theres or fess up and become your special lady?

(Dad????  Is that you?)

Well yeah but uh, just because uh he doesn't like her doesn't make him uh you know not a dude and thats not the issue here.  Uh you know Bunny could be considered a a a a uh artist you know in the uh parlence of our times too you know uh hasn't that ever  uh occured to you man, uh sir.  So instead of of of going around and blaming him maybe you should look at it from his point of view you know.  Take a uh 5 star chef in the parlence of our times who has you know uh worked his way up from well the uh nasty underbelly of the restraunt industry and made it!  Then this amature rolls on the scene with really no credentials other than the ones under her blouse (their down there somewhere take another look) to ride the coat tails and claw her way to the front of this whole food porn thing we got going on here and then you tell me you wouldn't be you know just a little pissed of maybe even if only in public.  The dude told Dafino to fuck off too ya know after trying to muscle in on his case,  I mean after all Dafinos rug didn't get pissed on and neither did Rachel Rays, do you see my point but something tells me you would be uh more than happy to uh "soil her rug".

Also dude,

If you consider yourself an artist, you know with food, uuhm you don't use a microwave.

Post by: Sahm Music on June 25, 2009, 02:05:00 PM
Doug Sahm needs to be nominated for The Great Dudes In History!!!!
The original cosmic cowboy "Texas Groover"
Douglas Wayne Sahm (November 6, 1941 ? November 18, 1999), was a musician from Texas. Born in San Antonio, Texas, he was a child prodigy in country music, but became a significant figure in blues, rock and other genres. Today Sahm is considered one of the most important figures in what is identified as Tex-Mex. He was the founder and leader of the 1960s rock and roll band The Sir Douglas Quintet, and later with Augie Meyers, Freddy Fender and Flaco Jimenez - The Texas Tornados
Sahm began his musical career singing and playing steel guitar, mandolin and violin as "Little" Doug Sahm, making his radio debut at the age five and releasing his first record "A Real American Joe" at age eleven. In December of 1952 he played on stage with Hank Williams.

He is said to have been offered a permanent spot on the Grand Ole Opry, but his mother wanted him to finish junior high.

One of Sahm's earliest recordings was rejected by Mercury Records in 1953. Also in the mid-1950s, he started sneaking into San Antonio R&B clubs such as the Tiffany Lounge and the Ebony Lounge, and he was soon performing at the same venues.

Sahm formed his first band, the Knights, in 1957. Later in the decade, Sahm joined up with Spot Barnett's band playing mostly black San Antonio blues clubs. In 1960, Sahm travelled across the country promoting a record.[1]

He met Freddy Fender around 1958 and Roy Head of Roy Head and The Traits from San Marcos, TX in 1959 when they shared the stage at a sock hop in San Antonio's Municipal Auditorium.

In 1965, prompted by record producer Huey Meaux, he formed the Sir Douglas Quintet with childhood friend Augie Meyers. The group's name was chosen in an effort to make the band seem British to benefit from the British invasion. This image had its problems, particularly Sahm's Texas accent and that two fifths of the band were of Mexican origin. Some early publicity photos of the band showed them only in silhouette to hide this fact.

The band had a top 20 US hit with the 12-bar blues "She's About a Mover" and a lesser hit with "And the Rains Came," the former also reaching the Top Twenty in the UK.

The band broke up after a bust for marijuana possession in Corpus Christi, Texas. Doug moved to San Francisco, forming the Honkey Blues Band before reforming the Sir Douglas Quintet with a new lineup. Eventually Augie Meyers rejoined the quintet and they released the successful single and album "Mendocino". The record contained the song "At the Crossroad" with the legendary Sahm line "You just can't live in Texas if you don't have a lot of soul".

"Look" he said, "for me right now there are three groups: Butterfield, The Byrds and the Sir Douglas Quintet." Bob Dylan
In 1973, Jerry Wexler of Atlantic Records bought Sahm's contract and produced his solo debut Doug Sahm and Band, an album featuring Bob Dylan, Dr. John, David Bromberg and Flaco Jim?nez.

"Then in October 1972, Dylan was in the studio with Doug Sahm..........Dylan having been friendly with Sahm since the mid-sixties and having expressed enthusiasm for the Sir Douglas Quintet on more than one occasion"[3]

Sahm continued recording both as a solo artist and with the Sir Douglas Quintet. During this period, Sahm also had a couple of minor motion picture roles. In 1972, he and the Quintet appeared with Kris Kristofferson in Cisco Pike and in 1979 he was featured in More American Graffiti.

Sahm was also a sought-after session musician, appearing on releases of other artists including, The Grateful Dead. He sang backing vocals on Willie Nelson's 1977 gospel album, The Troublemaker.

In 1983, Sahm and Meyers signed with the Swedish Sonet label, and made several extensive European tours that revitalized their careers. The single "Meet Me In Stockholm" from their Midnight Sun LP went platinum and was one of the biggest selling records ever in Scandinavia. After an accident in 1985 Doug moved to Canada and then returned to Texas in 1988.

In 1990 Sahm formed Tex-Mex supergroup the Texas Tornados with Freddy Fender, Augie Meyers and Flaco Jimenez. The group recorded four albums and received a Grammy.

Sahm also appears on the Uncle Tupelo album Anodyne on the song "Give Back the Key to my Heart". Anodyne was released in 1993.

Sahm recorded a Grammy-winning solo album, The Last Real Texas Blues Band and recorded with yet another new formation of the Sir Douglas Quintet for SDQ '98.

Sahm died of a heart attack in his sleep in a motel room in Taos, New Mexico on November 18, 1999.

A posthumous album, The Return of Wayne Douglas, was released in 2000. Sahm's son, Shawn Sahm, continues in his father's footsteps as the leader of his band, Shawn Sahm & The Tex Mex Experience. Father and son appeared together on the cover of the Rolling Stone in 1968.

dude saint of the late '80's Ferris Beuler
all i need to suport my argument is some Quotes

"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop to look once in awhile, you could miss it" - Ferris Beuler

"I do have a test today; that wasn't bull. It's on European Socialism. I mean really, whats the point? I'm not European. I don't plan on being European. So, who cares if they're socialists? They could be Facist Energists for all I care. It still wouldn't change the fact that I don't own a car. Not that I condone facism, or any other ism for that matter. Isms, in my opinion, are not good. A person should not believe in an ism; he should believe in himself. I quote John Lennon, 'I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me.' Good point there. After all...he was the Walrus. I could be the Walrus-I'd still have to bum rides off of people." - Ferris Beuler

"Oh, he's very popular Ed. The sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, waistoids, dweebies, dickheads - they all adore him. They think he's a righteous dude."

I nominate Billy Bob Thornton's character in Sling Blade.
I am tired at the moment and cannot fathom presenting an appropriate argument or list of reasons as to WHY. Just...see the movie, and tell me if you agree.

Mostly because he WAS who he WAS, he saw things clearly, and he had his own kinda language "I'll have some of dem dere french fried potaters"

It's just a general feeling I got off him which put him on my list of heros.

How's about the late, great Warren Zevon?  Like the dude knew he was expiring fast and still carried on to "enjoy every sandwich".

He left us with a catalog of classic songs unlike anything anyone else ever addressed;

"Send lawyers, guns and money, the shit has hit the fan"...

"Well, I saw Lon Chaney walking with the Queen
Doing the werewolves of London
I saw Lon Chaney, Jr. walking with the Queen
Doing the werewolves of London
I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's
His hair was perfect
Werewolves of London again
Draw blood
ahhh oooh, werewolves of London"...

"My Shit's Fucked Up :

Well, I went to the doctor
I said, "I'm feeling kind of rough"
He said, "I'll break it to you, son (Warren sings, "Let me break it to you, son")
Your shit's fucked up."
I said, "my shit's fucked up?"
Well, I don't see how--"
He said, "The shit that used to work--
It won't work now."

I had a dream
Ah, shucks, oh, well
Now it's all fucked up
It's shot to hell

Yeah, yeah, my shit's fucked up
It has to happen to the best of us
The rich folks suffer like the rest of us
It'll happen to you

That amazing grace
Sort of passed you by
You wake up every day
And you start to cry
Yeah, you want to die
But you just can't quit
Let me break it on down:
It's the fucked up shit "...

What's so funny 'bout peace, love and understanding?

John Kruk

I'm not a Phillys fan or really a baseball fan (anymore), but I remember going to watch the Phillys play the Pirates when I was a kid and Kruk would either lay in the outfield or just sit there and "stretch". Krukie is also a very cool dude as well... good person all around. However it wasn't until I started researching some infamous Krukie quotes that I realized he should be enshrined:

After the Phillies scored eight runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to win a game:

"We?re losing by eight runs, and all I?m thinking about at that point is getting back to the hotel by midnight because that?s when room service closes. All of a sudden we start getting hits and more hits, and I?m saying, ?I?m not going to make it.? If you?re not going to get room service you might as well win."

"I would think I drive most hitting coaches crazy. During one single at-bat I used six different stances on six pitches. Oh yeah, I also struck out. So what do I know ?"

And my personal favorite...

"Lady, I'm not an athlete... I'm a ball player."

On a side note he also opened up a bar in West Virginia. When asked why he called the bar "Third Base," Kruk replied: "Third base is the last stop before you go home."

There are A LOT of DUDES out there. But let's analyze dudes in history. WHO influenced the Dude and this laid back, lifestyle of his and many others?

ALEISTER CROWLEY

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law

Creator of Thelema....he is THE man

Ah the Beast himself.

I have slight problems equating him with Dudeism though (I do own most of his books including "666 - Magical Diary of the Beast")

Damn fine occultist and good source of information on rituals (probably wrote the Wiccan Reed but don't mention it to them).

Massive egotist yes, but Dude, sorry but I don't think he was.

I'm gonna enter Kurt Russell.............not in the biblical sense of course, just cos I tend to get him and Jeff Bridges kinda muddled up and for this line at the end of the film The Thing, after much alien carnage has ensued (generally people morphing into hell knows what) wondering if the thing is dead with no hope of surviving says "Why don't we just wait here for a while, see what happens....."

Don't know if It's been said, but I would nominate Eckhart Tolle as a Great Dude In History.   Eckhart is one of the greatest laid back Dudes of our time (author of A New Earth & The Power of Now).  A spiritual person who is not affiliated with any religion, doesn't have a religion, he has gained millions of followers, and his books have been translated into 34 different languages.  Not only is he all about Takin' it easy, in his great relaxed efforts to show people how to do the same; he's not at all worried as to whether or not people will wake up to this important principle of life.  Strikes or gutter balls, he's perfectly content either way.

Anthony de Mello, a Jesuit priest from India, influenced the world through his powerful understanding of the human condition. Through the use of parables and teaching stories, de Mello pointed the way to authentic living. The influence of spiritual traditions outside mainstream Christianity is clear in his work. The depth and spiritual insight in his teachings, stories and articles made him well known throughout the world. He is well appreciated by many inside and outside the Roman Catholic Church.

His teachings were temporarily banned within the Roman Catholic Church by then future pope Ratsinger, but the ban has been lifted. Catholics are still advised to avoid his writings though. It is good to be reminded occasionally that the Roman Catholic Church still has a blacklist, where mystics can get their work listed.

"How shall I help the world?"
"By understanding it," said the Master.
"And how shall I understand it?"
    "By turning away from it."
"How then shall I serve humanity?"
    "By understanding yourself."

last recorded words, a prayer following Communion:

Don't change: Desire to change is the enemy of love.
Don't change yourselves: Love yourselves as you are.
Don't change others: Love all others as they are.
Don't change the world: It is in God's hands and he knows.
And if you do that change will occur
Marvellously in its own way and in its own time
Yield to the current of life unencumbered by baggage.

There were rules in the monastery, but the Master always warned against the tyranny of the law. "Obedience keeps the rules," he would say. "Love knows when to break them."

Alan Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, and Tom Waits! Especially Tom Waits!

I saw Alan Ginsberg read his poetry in Los Angeles years ago and he read this one epic poem, the refrain of which was:

"Don't smoke! Don't smoke! Don't smoke! Don't smoke! Smoke dope! Smoke dope! Smoke dope! Smoke dope!"

He was very dude, very cool, and also very Zen.

And Tom Waits both for his hobo-inspired music and persona and his laid-back dudeness.

Also, Ted (of "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure").

Oh, and this guy named Tex who is the lead singer for a band called the Groovy Rednecks. He epitomizes dudeism...

2 to add to the list: Bono, the Fonz.

Bono might not seem chill enough to some dudes, but I submit that he is actually a pretty cool dude. He has a soulful voice, he's saved more lives in Africa from his humanitarian work than someone like Mother Theresa who is lauded the world over but only ever let people rot, she never saved a life! I consider Bono a great humanitarian.

I see a lot of dudes and dudettes on this list that arn't exactly "dudes", Bono for one is no dude. He might be famous and have slightly good if only douch-like  intentions, but I can't actually consider him for a greatest dudes of all time list.

Jesus may be one of the greatest dudes of all time, but what message are we sending as dudeists if we don't include Sidhartha and the rest of the gang? It would be easier to pick the list if we narrowed down the requirements.

I don't like the word requirements, but somehow deities and pop singers don't really strike me as appropriate for a dude award.

I would also say that fictional characters be scratched, but what kind of sense would that make under dudeism circumstances...

So are these great dudes in history, like the Dude, or are they simply great in the eyes of dudes?

My vote is with Bill Murray

Hi,

I'd like to make a suggestion, well, not for the greatest dude in history, because, to be frank, the notion of a greatest dude in history does not make a whole lot of sense to me, but for a great dude indeed. His name is Paul K. Feyerabend (1924-1994), an Austrian-born philosopher, who never thought of himself as a philosopher.

Now, to start with, the name itself has got something dudeist about it. Feyerabend, which is basically German (although the spelling today would be Feierabend, but we don't want to split hairs, do we?) stands for the time of day when you stop working, "calling it a day"-time, in the parlance of our times perhaps.

One might hold against him that he did not give the impression to be dudeist exactly, at least not during his earlier years that is. First, he was in fact an officer, lieutenant,  in the Wehrmacht, the Nazi-army. However, in his autobiography "Killing Time" or "Zeitverschwendung" (which is also a rather dudeist title for a book, don't you think?), he stated that he entered the officers' academy hoping the war would be over before he would have graduated from it. Actually this plan, the strength of which lay in its simplicity, did not work out, he got badly wounded at the eastern front and stayed a crip.., uh, handi... , disabled would be the correct nomenclature, I suppose, for the rest of his life. Second, he was rather undude in his early years of a philosopher. A bit uptight in his positions one might say perhaps

Anyway, his dudeness lies in his major "teachings" which were mainly anti-teachings. Actually, he was called an anarchist (!) of scientific methods; he did not accept that there was or is something like scientific method as such. Instead, he maintained that what qualifies as scientific method keeps changing all the time and differs widely even within specific disciplines.
In a nutshell his message was "Anything goes!" Purportedly, he coined that phrase.

With is well-argued points he drove members of the scientific establishment quite potty.

He also warned about the unchecked aggression and dominance of "science" and formed something like a civil rights movement within science.

Ah yes, and he spent a lot of time in California, as a professor at UoC, Berkeley.

To wrap it all up, Feyerabend stands for a humanist, non-dogmatic, dissident way of looking at science and many other things who, particularly in his later years, stressed the importance of other things like helping and comforting each other over high-flying philosophising.

And yes, he never regarded himself as a philosopher but just as someone who did what he was interested in.

Here is a bit more about him: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Feyerabend (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Feyerabend).

I don't know, whether they ever met, but I think if they had met, he and Kurt Vonnegut would have got along nicely.

There are some videos with interviews in youtube but sofar all I have found are in German, which is a pity, because his dudeness becomes apparent when you see and hear him answering all these questions.

So, I suggest Paul K Feyerabend as a Great Dude.

Catch you later on down the trail!
faithfully yours
Bruder Erwin

Hi cckeiser,
I dig that skeptical idealism thing very much, mark it eight! Very much straightforward.

In essence, it doesn't seem to be far from the Feyerabend thoughts, though, although I would agree that Feyerabend's thoughts were a bit more convoluted in comparison.

By the way, how about all the constructivist dudes, like Paul Watzlawick and the others from the Palo Alto group?

Let's abide
Yours faithfully

But then, what is a real dude? If he/she really was a real dude...would we have even heard of him/her?
BUt as long as we are going to nominate characters I would like to hold forth for your consideration the First dude of them all....The Righteous Rev. Jim from Taxi!

Surely these are examples of Dudeism we admire, therefore they don't have to be "real" just good examples of Dudeism?

It is probable that the original Lao Tsu didn't exist, or didn't write all of the Tao Te Ching, it is more likely it is an amalgam of Taoist writings that have proved to be "Useful" or "Meaningful" so have been included together in the Tao Te Ching, then later all accredited to him. It's not important whether he wrote them or not, what is important is that they exist and have been found to contain some truth.

The same here, these are useful examples by which we may measure our own attempts at Dudeist living.

Hi Dudes,
I've been reading this forum for a year or so but did not register until today.

I did a search but maybe I missed him because of a difference in spelling (or I spazed somewhere?) but I'd like to nominate the "Doodah Man" from "Truckin'" by Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter (both great Dudes themselves) as a great Dude in history. I've seen his image in a signature here but maybe I lost my train of thought and missed him in my searches.

I also seen Jimmy Buffett mentioned somewhere up above so I'd like to 2nd (or 3rd or 4th or . . . what wuz I talkn' about?) the nomination for him as a great Dude in history.  If there ever was a smoke'm if ya got?m (he probably does) or mellow (waist'n away in Margaritaville) kinda guy that really does the rebel shrug (Is it ignorance or apathy? Hey, I don't know and I don't care.) I think it's Jimmy.

Fins Up Dudes!

I have to agree ..... big influnce ....... and positive ....... pretty much.....

Fletch never wanted to be a killer for hire, he just wanted to write his story about drug dealers. He has a dreamlike fantasy sequence in the movie. Hmm, yeah, that's all I gots.

Jiddu Krishnamurti. Indian philosopher made famous in the early twentieth century. Here's what wikipedia has to sum up a bit of what he thought:

"Krishnamurti denounced the concept of saviors, spiritual leaders, or any other intermediaries to reality, and urged people to directly discover the underlying causes of the problems facing individuals and society. Such discovery he considered the natural outcome of unconditional, absolute psychological freedom, which he proclaimed to be within reach of everyone, irrespective of background, ability, or disposition. He vowed to work towards this goal of universal psychological freedom, and stated that understanding the actual relationships individuals have with themselves, society, and nature is of vital importance in attaining this objective."

The man preached no religion, caste, or nationality. After his death, nobody took up his teachings because, at his own insistence, he didn't want to become deified. A true dudeist priest if their ever was one.

Dude, I forgot about that list. This one has always really bothered me:

Sarah Silverman
Comedian, Actress, Agent Provacateur.

One of the funniest humans on earth, Silverman has managed to downplay her classic good-looks in exchange for current status as the most controversial and offensive comedian in the world (except maybe for that Danish guy that drew the Mohammed cartoon). Universally beloved by male dudes everywhere, who wish more women were like her, but with significantly lower standards.

I just don't get that at all. She is one of the most "Walter" people I can think of. Maybe worse than that. Yuck. Since when is being offensive a "Dude" quality? I am sure glad more women aren't like her, and I certainly don't find her to be attractive or funny in any way. She just seems mean.

OK, done with whiny rant.

But being this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you?ve got to ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well do ya, punk?"

I think calling her a "Walter" is giving her too much credit, dude. Walter was an asshole but at least he could get shit done when the chips were down. I think I'll put Sarah Silverman in the "Knox Harrington" category. You all remember him right? The video-artist with the cleft asshole who's giggling incessantly at Maude's pad? I remember trying to watch that Sarah Silverman show, had no clue who the woman was at the time. I couldn't stand to watch it for more than about 10 minutes. Her humor is vulgar and juvenile. At least I can say I gave her an unbiased chance.
Title: Re: Welcome to the "Great Dudes in History" Forum

Oh man, I love the Sarah Silverman program. The point is obviously that she's acting as undude as possible. I think that her intelligence and irony and willingness to poke fun at herself (and everyone) makes her by far the most Dudely female comedian out there.

There's long been a complaint (From Adam Corolla, Christopher Hitchens and others) that women aren't as funny as men. I think they can be but they're often hindered by the fact that they're reluctant to be too unladylike. Silverman shows that it's okay for women to be as crass and rude as any male comedian. And of course, being crass and rude is only undude if it's done for cheap laughs. I think SS does it in the way that Larry David is rude to show how we are all a little bit ashamed of our internal monologue. It's sort of cathartic.

Knox Harrington, on the other hand, is a symbol for the smugness and vacancy of modern art. It's implied that his art is hollow and self-serving. I don't think that's the case with Silverman. Her shows and routines deftly skewer so much about humanity and the dark side of what it is to be human.

Certainly we get a lot of people claiming she's not a Dude and should be stricken from the list. But I think that it's just that a lot of people find her way too ironic for comfort. Which is understandable. At some point we may indeed have to remove her because this is a free religion after all. Don't want to be a fascist about it.

There's a difference between poking fun at yourself and making a vulgar spectacle of yourself. Perhaps off-screen she really is a loveable person who acts totally normal, but I don't think a woman has to act gross and stupid to be funny. That's just me, dude. It's the same with Stephen Colbert for me. I've read some of the things he's written and it's quite witty and humorous, but I absolutely cannot stand his show because the character he invented for it is unbearable to watch. When he's out of character, he's brilliant.

If we're also including characters here I want to nominate Kurt Russell as "Captain Ron". He's like the Dude of the Islands man! He is a long-haired, oat soda drinking sea captain who literally floats through life, taking each day as it comes. When shit hits the fan he says fuck it and deals with tasks at hand without losing his cool. He's got some great quotes too, such as:

"Okay, let's kick the tires and light the fires!"

(to the kid who picks up his(Ron's)beer) "Hey! You want a beer you get your own beer"

"Best way to find out about a boat is to get 'er out on the ocean. Anything's gonna happen, it's gonna happen out there!"

And my personal favorite- "Okay, let's tie 'er off and kick back some cold ones huh!"

I'm going to second, third, and fourth everyone who mentioned Thomas Jefferson.  I raise them a Douglas Adams.  He may have been a little hardcore on the atheism, and that's not cool, but in every other way he was Dudetastic.

Also, how can you argue with someone who divined the answer to life, the universe, and everything?

Both Dudes knew where their towels were.

Dudes, another Epicurus fan here. Where else in history did a philosopher actually say "relax"? He pointed out that happiness is the goal of all humans and that anxiety is the principal enemy of happiness. So he proposed cultivating a calm mind, good friends and good conversation in a peaceful setting; all of which are demonstrated by our heroes in the bowling alley.

April Margera because she's truly an inspiration.

Mother Theresa she lived over 100 years and never let them get under her skin.

And I agree with Albert Hoffman he was all about trying to help his fellow man. Even used himself as a Guinea pig.

Hey there Dudes!

Back in the days of Socrates, there was a man for his time and place called Aristippus. He was likely the philosophical inspiration for fellow Dude Epicurus, but unfortunately his name has been forgotten across the sands of time. But I happen to think his philosophy suits Dudeism perfectly, and I wrote an article explainin' why I think so. If ya do read it, let me know what ya think.

Good one.
Very Dude like.

QuotePhilosophy

The anecdotes which are told of Aristippus (there are many in Diogenes Laƫrtius)[14] by no means give us the notion of a person who was the mere slave of his passions, but rather of one who took a pride in extracting enjoyment from all circumstances of every kind, and in controlling adversity and prosperity alike. They illustrate and confirm the two statements of Horace,[15] that to observe the precepts of Aristippus is "to endeavour to adapt circumstances to myself, not myself to circumstances" and[16] that, "every complexion of life, every station and circumstance sat gracefully upon him." Thus when reproached for his love of bodily indulgences, he answered, that "it is not abstinence from pleasures that is best, but mastery over them without ever being worsted".[17] When Dionysius, provoked at some of his remarks, ordered him to take the lowest place at table, he said, "You wish to dignify the seat".[18] His statement "wise people, even though all laws were abolished, would still lead the same life"[19] is a quote sometimes, and erroneously, attributed to the comic poet Aristophanes.[20]

Whether Aristippus was a prisoner to a satrap, grossly insulted and even spit upon by a tyrant, enjoying the pleasures of a banquet, or reviled for faithlessness to Socrates by his fellow-pupils, he maintained the same calm temper. He seemed insulting to Xenophon and Plato, as seen from the Memorabilia, where he maintains a discussion against Socrates in defense of voluptuous enjoyment, and from the Phaedo, where his absence at the death of Socrates, though he was only at Aegina, 200 stadia from Athens, is doubtless mentioned as a reproach. Aristotle, too, calls him a sophist,[21] and notices a story of Plato's speaking to him, with rather undue vehemence, and of his replying with calmness.[22]

Aristippus imparted his doctrine to his daughter Arete who, in turn, imparted it to her son, Aristippus the Younger, who is said to have reduced it to a system. Although his dubious reputation has survived into modern times, his philosophy of ethical hedonism, as its name implies, was not entirely amoral. He admonished his students to never harm others, and cautioned that the pursuit of pleasure ought to be moderated by moral self-restraint.[23]
