I nominate The Fab Four (The Beatles!) were great dudes. They influenced a generation and still are influencing young folks with their music of peace and love.
Think about it. All you need is love... there is enough money, food, etc on this planet to go around. It's a matter of distribution. When there is love, there is sharing and caring.

Clint Eastwood - okay, so he's a Republican but I don't think you could meet anyone more laid back.

Matthew MacConaghey - by virtue of the fact that he was arrested for playing the bongo drums at 3am while naked and stoned out of his face. I mean, cool. What a Dude!

Jesus - Okay, so he didn't toke. But he did have long hair and a beard, and he had a tendency to abide.

clint eastwood is pretty dudeish in real life. don't know if he qualifies. maybe after he's dead (not face down in the muck, hopefully). matt mc is pretty dudeish considering he's a big hollywood actor. not a great dude in history, but definitely a dude. jesus is already listed. keep em coming.

No mention of Marcel Duchamp as a great Dude in history?  After giving up on painting, this brilliant Dadaist-Surrealist invented the Readymade: find a banal/utilitarian everyday object, take it out of context, call it art, sell it, get paid for it.  Great Duchamp quote: "My capital is time."  I mean ... Joni Mitchell?!  Duchamp's a much more obvious choice.

Another great Dude: J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr.  J virtually invented the '90s Slacker ethos.  If J ain't a major Dude, this Dude doesn't know who is.

I'd like to nominate Harris K. Telemacher as an honorary dude.  He's the wacky weatherman in the movie L.A. Story.  He spends his spare time rollerskating through the metropolitan museum of art in Los Angeles but his thinking has gotten to be very uptight. (He's had seven heart attacks- all imagined which is to say he was very unhappy but didn't know it because he was so happy all the time.)  But then  a freeway signpost speaks to him and helps him to find abiding happiness in the form of a special lady friend played by Victoria Tennant.  (Harris is played by Steve Martin who also wrote the script.)

L.A. Story is deeply mystical and is the only other movie in addition to The Big Lebowski
the Tiki Dude can watch over and over and never grow tired of.  It too has generated a bit of a cult following- or so I've been told.

I dont know if animals can be dudeists but if they can i think Balloo the bear should be nominated man. Oh yeah snoopy is too. Balloo the bear is from Jungle Book (1960 something film and book). He's a bear that preaches about

I think Balloo is a prime animal candidate..if you;re not into the whole brevity thing.

Second is a pair - calvin and hobbes. From the popular comic strip. Calvin is as spaced out as any dude. Hobbes likes to sunbathe. calvin is a 100% pacifist, as this can be seen when the bully moe beats him up and he doesnt do much. Hobes likes tuna sandwiches and likes to think hes real. Calvin spends large amounts of time in front of the tv and detests sports and conformity. Prime dude candidates i think,. But thats just like my opinion man,. 6 year olds dude.

Dave brubeck. Jazz maestro. Will play with just about anybody on stage. Hes 87 years old and thats due tot he fact that he never pushed himself in life, just went with the flow. Take 5 is the most chilled out duder song ever *(besides the creedence). Rumour has it that he ate food, smoked a lot of reefer and had a few beers. Dont know whether he had caucasians.

Though he is already on the list, Mahatma Gandhi, the father of my great country. he did not watch his buddies die face down in the sand.

P.G Wodehouse's characters Bertie and Wooster. Bertie eats big breakfasts and smokes cigarettes. He half heartedly chases tails and thats when his butler Jeeves helps him out. All he says is "Yes sir" and "no sir" and " I wouldnt agree sir". He's also very very funny- like our modern day dude. Good candidate. He also quit his white collar conformity job to start writing...quarter-time. Died at ripe age of 93. Thats a bummer man. Mind if i do a j ? Im out of suggestions.

his songs surrounded many of the topics covered in Dudeism. He also was never afraid to do his own thing. He constantly revisited his world philosophies and never focused his career around what his fans liked, but what he was into at the time.  My current favorite quote of his is "Nietzsche didn't wear an umpire's suit." In my opinion a prototypical Dudeism quote.
He definitely has a place among the great dudes in history.

Dude bums around the globe, eatin', drinkin', and kickin' back with cool people. He makes a lot of references to keeping his mind limber, and he sure likes to take er easy. He seems like a laid back, mellow Dude, but that's just my opinion.

Hold everything...I like Tony Bourdain, I watch his show, and I've read his book, but I don't know if he's a Dude.

He holds grudges, he is too quick to put somebody down, he has a rather high opinion of himself, and he can be rather spiteful at times.

Far more Walter than Dude, and a bit more Uli than Walter.

He lives a Dude lifestyle, but he probabgly isn't a Dude.

I too read his books.  He also does mob crime type books, which kinda makes him like the Cohen brothers but thats not my point.  I will have say that yes he can be undude at times.  I refer to his writing about working at Le Halles and he can be an asshole, but I do especially love When he tells the twink waiter that he as his sou chef will poke two holes in his neck then bump dicks in the middle.  It is very undude but wow what an attention getter.  But you have to give him credit he has made peace with Emeril.  Oh I'm ramblin again.

This is just like, my opinion, but I believe you have overlooked one of the most dudely thinkers in philosophy:Epictetus the Stoic. Basically, he said that the world is a crazy place, and that there are always going to be assholes. The only choice you have is how you react to it; do you jump out of a moving car with a uzi and make things drastically worse, or do you accept you fate, knowing that eventually the person who stole your new rug will either get theres or fess up and become your special lady?

i'm afraid i have to agree with tony bourdain being undude.  the man hates on rachel ray bigtime because she's not a real chef according to him.  and she may not be, but hey, she's an artist. an artist of the everyday kitchen.  i'd impregnate her and never see her again if she was down with it.

Douglas Wayne Sahm (November 6, 1941 ? November 18, 1999), was a musician from Texas. Born in San Antonio, Texas, he was a child prodigy in country music, but became a significant figure in blues, rock and other genres. Today Sahm is considered one of the most important figures in what is identified as Tex-Mex. He was the founder and leader of the 1960s rock and roll band The Sir Douglas Quintet, and later with Augie Meyers, Freddy Fender and Flaco Jimenez - The Texas Tornados
Sahm began his musical career singing and playing steel guitar, mandolin and violin as "Little" Doug Sahm, making his radio debut at the age five and releasing his first record "A Real American Joe" at age eleven. In December of 1952 he played on stage with Hank Williams.

He is said to have been offered a permanent spot on the Grand Ole Opry, but his mother wanted him to finish junior high.

One of Sahm's earliest recordings was rejected by Mercury Records in 1953. Also in the mid-1950s, he started sneaking into San Antonio R&B clubs such as the Tiffany Lounge and the Ebony Lounge, and he was soon performing at the same venues.

Sahm formed his first band, the Knights, in 1957. Later in the decade, Sahm joined up with Spot Barnett's band playing mostly black San Antonio blues clubs. In 1960, Sahm travelled across the country promoting a record.[1]

He met Freddy Fender around 1958 and Roy Head of Roy Head and The Traits from San Marcos, TX in 1959 when they shared the stage at a sock hop in San Antonio's Municipal Auditorium.

In 1965, prompted by record producer Huey Meaux, he formed the Sir Douglas Quintet with childhood friend Augie Meyers. The group's name was chosen in an effort to make the band seem British to benefit from the British invasion. This image had its problems, particularly Sahm's Texas accent and that two fifths of the band were of Mexican origin. Some early publicity photos of the band showed them only in silhouette to hide this fact.

The band had a top 20 US hit with the 12-bar blues "She's About a Mover" and a lesser hit with "And the Rains Came," the former also reaching the Top Twenty in the UK.

The band broke up after a bust for marijuana possession in Corpus Christi, Texas. Doug moved to San Francisco, forming the Honkey Blues Band before reforming the Sir Douglas Quintet with a new lineup. Eventually Augie Meyers rejoined the quintet and they released the successful single and album "Mendocino". The record contained the song "At the Crossroad" with the legendary Sahm line "You just can't live in Texas if you don't have a lot of soul".

In 1973, Jerry Wexler of Atlantic Records bought Sahm's contract and produced his solo debut Doug Sahm and Band, an album featuring Bob Dylan, Dr. John, David Bromberg and Flaco Jim?nez.

"Then in October 1972, Dylan was in the studio with Doug Sahm..........Dylan having been friendly with Sahm since the mid-sixties and having expressed enthusiasm for the Sir Douglas Quintet on more than one occasion"[3]

Sahm continued recording both as a solo artist and with the Sir Douglas Quintet. During this period, Sahm also had a couple of minor motion picture roles. In 1972, he and the Quintet appeared with Kris Kristofferson in Cisco Pike and in 1979 he was featured in More American Graffiti.

Sahm was also a sought-after session musician, appearing on releases of other artists including, The Grateful Dead. He sang backing vocals on Willie Nelson's 1977 gospel album, The Troublemaker.

In 1983, Sahm and Meyers signed with the Swedish Sonet label, and made several extensive European tours that revitalized their careers. The single "Meet Me In Stockholm" from their Midnight Sun LP went platinum and was one of the biggest selling records ever in Scandinavia. After an accident in 1985 Doug moved to Canada and then returned to Texas in 1988.

In 1990 Sahm formed Tex-Mex supergroup the Texas Tornados with Freddy Fender, Augie Meyers and Flaco Jimenez. The group recorded four albums and received a Grammy.

Sahm also appears on the Uncle Tupelo album Anodyne on the song "Give Back the Key to my Heart". Anodyne was released in 1993.

Sahm recorded a Grammy-winning solo album, The Last Real Texas Blues Band and recorded with yet another new formation of the Sir Douglas Quintet for SDQ '98.

Sahm died of a heart attack in his sleep in a motel room in Taos, New Mexico on November 18, 1999.

A posthumous album, The Return of Wayne Douglas, was released in 2000. Sahm's son, Shawn Sahm, continues in his father's footsteps as the leader of his band, Shawn Sahm & The Tex Mex Experience. Father and son appeared together on the cover of the Rolling Stone in 1968.

I'm not a Phillys fan or really a baseball fan (anymore), but I remember going to watch the Phillys play the Pirates when I was a kid and Kruk would either lay in the outfield or just sit there and "stretch". Krukie is also a very cool dude as well... good person all around. However it wasn't until I started researching some infamous Krukie quotes that I realized he should be enshrined:

Don't know if It's been said, but I would nominate Eckhart Tolle as a Great Dude In History.   Eckhart is one of the greatest laid back Dudes of our time (author of A New Earth & The Power of Now).  A spiritual person who is not affiliated with any religion, doesn't have a religion, he has gained millions of followers, and his books have been translated into 34 different languages.  Not only is he all about Takin' it easy, in his great relaxed efforts to show people how to do the same; he's not at all worried as to whether or not people will wake up to this important principle of life.  Strikes or gutter balls, he's perfectly content either way.

I second the nomination of the Beatles but only John, George, and Ringo.  Paul would have to be a "Dudas Iscariot" for selling out to money and bad pop music.  A wolf in Dudes clothing...

I see a lot of dudes and dudettes on this list that arn't exactly "dudes", Bono for one is no dude. He might be famous and have slightly good if only douch-like  intentions, but I can't actually consider him for a greatest dudes of all time list.

Jesus may be one of the greatest dudes of all time, but what message are we sending as dudeists if we don't include Sidhartha and the rest of the gang? It would be easier to pick the list if we narrowed down the requirements.

I don't like the word requirements, but somehow deities and pop singers don't really strike me as appropriate for a dude award.

I would also say that fictional characters be scratched, but what kind of sense would that make under dudeism circumstances...

His name is Paul K. Feyerabend (1924-1994), an Austrian-born philosopher, who never thought of himself as a philosopher.

Now, to start with, the name itself has got something dudeist about it. Feyerabend, which is basically German (although the spelling today would be Feierabend, but we don't want to split hairs, do we?) stands for the time of day when you stop working, "calling it a day"-time, in the parlance of our times perhaps.

One might hold against him that he did not give the impression to be dudeist exactly, at least not during his earlier years that is. First, he was in fact an officer, lieutenant,  in the Wehrmacht, the Nazi-army. However, in his autobiography "Killing Time" or "Zeitverschwendung" (which is also a rather dudeist title for a book, don't you think?), he stated that he entered the officers' academy hoping the war would be over before he would have graduated from it. Actually this plan, the strength of which lay in its simplicity, did not work out, he got badly wounded at the eastern front and stayed a crip.., uh, handi... , disabled would be the correct nomenclature, I suppose, for the rest of his life. Second, he was rather undude in his early years of a philosopher. A bit uptight in his positions one might say perhaps

Anyway, his dudeness lies in his major "teachings" which were mainly anti-teachings. Actually, he was called an anarchist (!) of scientific methods; he did not accept that there was or is something like scientific method as such. Instead, he maintained that what qualifies as scientific method keeps changing all the time and differs widely even within specific disciplines.
In a nutshell his message was "Anything goes!" Purportedly, he coined that phrase.

With is well-argued points he drove members of the scientific establishment quite potty.

He also warned about the unchecked aggression and dominance of "science" and formed something like a civil rights movement within science.

Ah yes, and he spent a lot of time in California, as a professor at UoC, Berkeley.

To wrap it all up, Feyerabend stands for a humanist, non-dogmatic, dissident way of looking at science and many other things who, particularly in his later years, stressed the importance of other things like helping and comforting each other over high-flying philosophising.

And yes, he never regarded himself as a philosopher but just as someone who did what he was interested in.

I don't know, whether they ever met, but I think if they had met, he and Kurt Vonnegut would have got along nicely.

So, I suggest Paul K Feyerabend as a Great Dude.

I dig that skeptical idealism thing very much, mark it eight! Very much straightforward.

In essence, it doesn't seem to be far from the Feyerabend thoughts, though, although I would agree that Feyerabend's thoughts were a bit more convoluted in comparison.

It is probable that the original Lao Tsu didn't exist, or didn't write all of the Tao Te Ching, it is more likely it is an amalgam of Taoist writings that have proved to be "Useful" or "Meaningful" so have been included together in the Tao Te Ching, then later all accredited to him. It's not important whether he wrote them or not, what is important is that they exist and have been found to contain some truth.

I've been reading this forum for a year or so but did not register until today.

I did a search but maybe I missed him because of a difference in spelling (or I spazed somewhere?) but I'd like to nominate the "Doodah Man" from "Truckin'" by Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter (both great Dudes themselves) as a great Dude in history. I've seen his image in a signature here but maybe I lost my train of thought and missed him in my searches. 

I also seen Jimmy Buffett mentioned somewhere up above so I'd like to 2nd (or 3rd or 4th or . . . what wuz I talkn' about?) the nomination for him as a great Dude in history.  If there ever was a smoke'm if ya got?m (he probably does) or mellow (waist'n away in Margaritaville) kinda guy that really does the rebel shrug (Is it ignorance or apathy? One of the funniest humans on earth, Silverman has managed to downplay her classic good-looks in exchange for current status as the most controversial and offensive comedian in the world (except maybe for that Danish guy that drew the Mohammed cartoon). Universally beloved by male dudes everywhere, who wish more women were like her, but with significantly lower standards.

I just don't get that at all. She is one of the most "Walter" people I can think of. Maybe worse than that. Yuck. Since when is being offensive a "Dude" quality? I am sure glad more women aren't like her, and I certainly don't find her to be attractive or funny in any way. She just seems mean.

I think calling her a "Walter" is giving her too much credit, dude. Walter was an asshole but at least he could get shit done when the chips were down. I think I'll put Sarah Silverman in the "Knox Harrington" category. You all remember him right? The video-artist with the cleft asshole who's giggling incessantly at Maude's pad? I remember trying to watch that Sarah Silverman show, had no clue who the woman was at the time. I couldn't stand to watch it for more than about 10 minutes. Her humor is vulgar and juvenile. Oh man, I love the Sarah Silverman program. The point is obviously that she's acting as undude as possible. I think that her intelligence and irony and willingness to poke fun at herself (and everyone) makes her by far the most Dudely female comedian out there.

There's long been a complaint (From Adam Corolla, Christopher Hitchens and others) that women aren't as funny as men. I think they can be but they're often hindered by the fact that they're reluctant to be too unladylike. Silverman shows that it's okay for women to be as crass and rude as any male comedian. And of course, being crass and rude is only undude if it's done for cheap laughs. I think SS does it in the way that Larry David is rude to show how we are all a little bit ashamed of our internal monologue. It's sort of cathartic.

Knox Harrington, on the other hand, is a symbol for the smugness and vacancy of modern art. It's implied that his art is hollow and self-serving. I don't think that's the case with Silverman. Her shows and routines deftly skewer so much about humanity and the dark side of what it is to be human.

Certainly we get a lot of people claiming she's not a Dude and should be stricken from the list. But I think that it's just that a lot of people find her way too ironic for comfort. Which is understandable. At some point we may indeed have to remove her because this is a free religion after all. Don't want to be a fascist about it.

Jeff Dugan (from the movie FM) was one heck of a Dude character. That movie had a couple of great Dude characters, come to think of it...  If you haven't seen this movie it's still out there someplace... Peace, fellow Dudes!  :)

If we're also including characters here I want to nominate Kurt Russell as "Captain Ron". He's like the Dude of the Islands man! He is a long-haired, oat soda drinking sea captain who literally floats through life, taking each day as it comes. When shit hits the fan he says fuck it and deals with tasks at hand without losing his cool. He's got some great quotes too, such as:

I would just like to add, John Frickin' Denver.  The dude fought Phyllis Schlafly and Tipper Gore's Eagle Forum along side Frank Zappa and Dee Snyder of Twisted Sister in front of congress to stop the Parental Advisory labeling on records.  His songs are righteous, and clear.

He was likely the philosophical inspiration for fellow Dude Epicurus, but unfortunately his name has been forgotten across the sands of time.
