I second that for Frank Zappa, he's a dude, no doubts about it.

And one smart cookie, too.  Anyone who can take on the PMRC and explain to them in exquisite detail how to shove their rules up their asses gets my respect.

Oh yeah, and a great guitar player, too.

One of the highlights of my college career was the 45 minutes or so I spent talking with Zappa. He was very intelligent but also ultra-cool to let me and a couple other college guys sit around with him backstage before he gave a lecture.

Great guy.

That is pretty fucking cool.

The only thing I can compare it to in my life is once Lenny Kravitz just showed up where a bunch of us were sitting on some grass in New Orleans waiting around for Jazz Fest to start (this was back in the early-mid 90's) and packed a fat glass piece and got everybody high and then borrowed someone's guitar and played Are You Gonna Go My Way and Let Love Rule. Then he left and quick as he came, was surreal like a dream. Haha.

It was kind of intimidating talking with Zappa because he was so smart and did not suffer fools at all. As we were leaving the SGA president came to see him and wanted Zappa to autograph a stack of albums. I remember Zappa getting pissed at him and only signed one album before asking him to leave.

I guess the fact that he let us sit with him for so long said something about us (it was me, my roommate and some other guy). Zappa even mentioned us and our conversation favorably during his lecture, which we thought was the coolest.

Wide range of things, but politics mostly. He was really down on the fucking reactionaries of the time.

It was amazing. I mean, for 45 minutes or so I was sitting in a room with Zappa, my roommate and some other guy. Talking. One of the big highlights of my life. Really.
