Title: Sweden recognises new file-sharing religion Kopimism
Post by: DigitalBuddha on January 08, 2012, 07:54:02 AM
Sweden recognises new file-sharing religion Kopimism

A "church" whose central tenet is the right to file-share has been formally recognised by the Swedish government.

The Church of Kopimism claims that "kopyacting" - sharing information through copying - is akin to a religious service.

The "spiritual leader" of the church said recognition was a "large step".

There's something about fielsharing that does irk me a bit.  Although I'm down with freedom of information, I'm not really down with piracy.

Capitalism may be a nasty disease when merged with greed and devoid of human-kindness, but it does serve a purpose in getting things done.

Someone has to pay for things to be created, or nothing will be available TO share.  Of course, I don't think things should be created and sold for overly-high profits, so it's much of a muchness.

I just wish that we all paid less, not that some of us pay and some of us don't.  Stop the piracy and stop the profiteering, then we can all pay less (apart from the pirates, who have to pay more than the usual zero ;)) and corporations won't be hoarding all our wealth.

*wakes up suddenly*  Damn, that was a vivid dream I was having... ho-hum :)

Nevertheless this is freedom of religion. So Sweden is not only cool for viking ladies right?  ;D

Ah, the ride of the Valkyries... nordic ladies cruising on hogs...  In the parlance of our times ;)

If I'm wrong, poke my eye out and pop a raven on my shoulder!

I'm not so much on the war side of things, I leave that to Tyr (who day is tomorrow).  I prefer to carry a long walking stick and play the wanderer on Wednesday, like a bearded Hobbitt ;D

Oh well, I meant that Odin was sticked to the Yggdrasil through his spear. I see your point on Tyr but I've always found cooler Thor who drunk beer pretty much, even if at times he was a total a****le.

Ah, hobbits, good food, good beverages, zesty enterprises.... I know what you mean dude. :D

Quote from: The Havamal

Wounded I hung on a wind-swept gallows
For nine long nights,
Pierced by a spear, pledged to Odin,
Offered, myself to myself
The wisest know not from whence spring
The roots of that ancient rood.

They gave me no bread,
They gave me no mead,
I looked down;
With a loud cry
I took up runes;
From that tree I fell.

for a little more of this heathenry (http://www.sunnyway.com/runes/odins_magic.html).

;D

I thought he was mostly about the mead rather than the ale.

Rev. Ed, it seems that with our blathering we have awakened our Pagan Dude.  :D

Mead, beer, whatever; if it gets your mind limber it's good anyway. But you're right meekon, my fault as I see beer as Gods' beverage, not mead.

Great quote about second breakfast, you know, I wear a One Ring reproduction all the time so I know what you're talking about.

Anyway Dudes one day or another we three should go in Sweden and have a look for those Viking Ladies. Just to see if they are real or not, only that from what I know in Sweden beer costs an eye. We should probably have to take our own beverages with us, renting a cart probably.  :D

Or are there Viking ladies in UK?

Though if you draw a line across england:

(thanks to wikipedia)

For quite a while the vikings ran half of the country (see picture), so technically there's a lot of Viking women left in northern britian.

And if your of Irish extractions like myself there's a lot of viking blood in the Irish because they ran ireland for a while as well.

I was mostly thinking of the Vikings stopping off here, picking up wives and then taking them to colonise the Land of Ice and Fire (aka Iceland).

I think mostly they left Viking ladies back home and came to settle with the native Britons over here.  So there are viking ladies here, by marraige, or half-vikings by birth (to the best of my knowledge, but I bow to any that Meekon might correct me on).

Actually there was a lot of colonisation under Canute (http://viking.no/e/people/e-knud.htm).

The rape and pillaging thing is mostly an early period thing, if you look at Jorvik and Dublin under the Viking periods they are both large trading settlements.

I was skipping past the raping and pillaging thing.  I meant actual settling, coming over here, stealing our women and jobs, and the like :)  Some things never change!  Oh damn, I've turned into a Daily Mail editorial... burn me!!!

I believe evidence suggests that a lot of the females who settled Iceland were Britons who the vikings picked up whilst passing.  But as far as I'm aware little or no viking women were brought over to Briton, just the men, who settled with our women (or took them elsewhere to settle other lands).

So there'd be no point in going to see the viking women because basically they were ours in the first place?

We can go and see the Viking women, but as far as I know none came here from their homeland.  Sailing's a man's job, in the Viking world.  As is colonising and bigamy ;D

Why pack up your family and take them on a long sea voyage when all we need to colonise a land that's already populated is stuffed down your undies?  My understanding was they were a bit like The Borg, or Genestealers from W4K, only with better beards 8)

But Iceland, I'm not so sure.  I think a lot of them were perloined from our shores, mostly Scotland and Ireland.  Was too long a route to sail around the coast, stop off in Porchester and whisk a maiden away, only to find out the quality of soft southern women was not to their liking and that she was always moaning about how this land wasn't as good as the dungheap she came from.

Once again, I bow to someone who has a more accurate grasp of the facts than I do.  I'm just going by memory... a dangerous thing, in my experiance :)

Just don't get me on the "Vikings with horned helmets" theme (vikings did not have horned helmets the later christian historians pictured them like that to make them more satanic).

This is a viking helmet:

Yeah, they did a LOT of that!
In fact most of our history is tainted with lies from the Jesuits. Anything written after 400 is suspect! 8(

Great helmet the first one, but I still prefer the one used by Rohirrim.

About-facing to the actual subject of the topic...

I think the Vikings would have thoroughly approved of e-piracy.  They have a very gypsy-esque attitude to property and possession :)

It's probably just in the northern-european psyche.  But equally, the ultra-liberalism of the peaceful, equality-high/poverty-low countries of the north is a rebellion against the ulta-conservative politics they're usually mired in.

Ah well, I wish this new faith luck, even if I'm not really down with its principals :)
