Yeah, I don't think they're really Dudes. They're often selfish and petty.
Now, if you want Graham Linehan characters who are dudes... ignore IT Crowd, ignore Father Ted, it has to be Manny from Black Books.
Just as Bridges is a great dude playing a great dude so is Bill Bailey playing Manny. Of course, it does help to swallow, ingest and absorb The Little Book of Calm, I guess. Really mellows you out :)
Well now, let's reconsider this. My feeling is that the description and type of a person who would qualify as a dude (maybe not a great dude, or one that stands out) might be broader than we have explored thus far.
So this begs the question, which seems to be ongoing; just what is a dude?

Personally, my highest qualification is being a "nice" person. Doesn't matter how laidback you are, or how much to take it easy, if you're actually an arsehole :P
Manny might not always be the most laidback and can be given to times of stress (mostly as Bernard treats him like a slave) but he is the nicest, most selfless of characters and would do for others naturally without being asked or forced, and Bernard never realises that he'd get even more out of him if he wasn't always pushing him into foot-down rebellion once in a while.
To deconstruct the IT Crowd:
Roy is quite a selfish guy. He's often concerned with how others see him and likes to put in no effort to help other people, even if that's his job. He mistreats Richmond because he's different (an IT Goth) and has no real respect for the women he's so desperate to con into going on dates with him. That said, he knows how to kick back and relax and he's usually there for his best friend, Moss.
Moss is the uber-nerd to Roy's uber-geek and one who's very socially inept. In a lot of ways, he's the original Sheldon Cooper. He's very happy-go-lucky when he's in his own safe little world (behind his desk) but when he's around other people he's nervous and panicky and often gets on his high horse about things that are important to him because he can't understand others and respect them for not being like he is. On the plus side, when he's safe in his element he knows how to keep himself happy and he drinks white russians :)
Jen is ambitious and would often climb over friends to get what she wants. She's often uptight and bitchy and almost always shallow. Her image and social standing often mean more to her than friendship and she has lots of hangups. The incident where he simply MUST get a certain pair of shoes exemplifies this, by the fact that she's so desperate to fit into several sizes below her own out of embarrassment for the size of her feet that she's willing to literally mutilate her body.
Richmond is perhaps the most dudely of the characters, although he's a little socially unaware and self-unaware at the same time. He's incredibly laidback and thoughtful but alas doesn't really see the truth in things, like when he goes to Renholm's father's funeral dressed in full gothy makeup and tries to convince the grieving widow that his Cradle of Filth album will help her get through it, especially a song called "Coffin Fodder". Despite this, he persists through people treading on him with good grace and a 'oh well, never mind' (aka, fuck it) attitude, but often fails to remain happy as his gothic demeanour takes too firm a hold.
So, they all hold some dudely qualities (apart from Jen, sadly) but often fall down in major areas, I feel.
These are of course, just my observations and opinions :)

IT dudes? Several come to mind....
First, foremost - John Perry Barlow. Truly a Renaissance Man for our Times. Montana rancher, heavily involved in charity work, a founder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (basically the on-line equivalent of the ACLU), and a lyricist for the Grateful Dead for decades.
Richard Stallman - heavily involved in the early formation of the open-source software movement
Linus Torvalds - ditto! Creator of Linux
The Woz! Pity he had to be shoved aside by Jobs ego and lack of tech skill (let the flames begin on that one ;-)
