Title: Are there other Dudely sports other than bowling?
Post by: Bodudesatva on August 26, 2011, 08:02:32 PM
As we all know, rolling that bowling ball is more than just a relaxing passtime, its a time to reflect on ones way through the cosmos just as the ball rolls towards the pins. Its a sacrament unlike any other, but my question is this: Are there other sporting-esque activities which can enhance ones inner Dude? If so, what are they?

For me, fishing sits nearly as high on the pinnacle of dudeistic spiritual activity as bowling. Throw out some line, park thine ass, white Russians in a thermos, repeat until most excellent.

Well dude...there is always driving around and the occasional acid flashbacks. ;D
Fishing with no bait on the hook sounds pretty damn dudely to me.

Welcome dude. Smoke em if you got em. 8)

Fishing is pretty dudely to me. But so is gardening, and doing laundry. Basically any task that I can enjoy a nice drink and sit out and wait for something to happen without my interference is a good "sport".

Darts is the aerial equivalent of bowling.  It's calm, zen and all about the gentle flow.

Likewise, as 4weed said, billiards is a great example, like its cousins snooker and pool.

Badmington is the gentle, easy-going cousin of tennis.

Croquet is a great lawn sport.   As well as bowls...

Bowls is a great sport, although mostly played by the elderly, it has seen a more youthful following in the last decade.  It's like bowling only you're not trying to knock down pins, you're trying to aim your little ball to sit as close to the "jack" as possible.  Its french cousin is boules, where instead of rolling the platic ball to the jack you toss a metal one, underarm with the same aim.

I myself like tiddlywinks ;D

then there's always "boat ramping", where one sets up a chair, grabs the beverage of choice and watches the drunk assholes try to get their boats and personal water crafts up and down the boat ramp at the local lake or river... particularly amusing when the ramp has a slight curve to it...

How about Curling? It's like Bowling only more Canadian. Now I have mixed feelings about suggesting this :).

Curling is fine for the guy who throws, but there's two guys who have to furiously sweep the path in front of the... err... curly thing.  Too much effort, man :D

I used to do this regularly.  Take a pole, throw out a line and just sit.  No need for bait, heck or even a hook, it's not the real point of fishing anyways. ;)

I wouldn't say exertion rate would remove a sport from being "dudely"
Take yoga for example, very abide like, yet taking some effort. Its not Football but its physical exertion.
I also feel that Parkour is very Dude, though it takes great strength and endurance, its about adapting and abiding to your environment.
At least that is my opinion.

I love parkour! Spectating only...my old bones couldn't take the punishment....plus I have a great track record at dropping from great heights...never volunteering to do so I hasten to add....that Isaac newton was onto something you know! :)

Peace.

:D Parkour is an amazing part of my life. It changed a lot of out looks I had on life. Your mind uses the same pathways to get through mental obstacles as it does physical. So it really is an eye opening practice.

OK I'll dig out "Withnail & I" you have a drink each time they have a drink and the last one standing wins (special merit if you make it to the end of the film).

Now that's a real drinking game.

The opening song from that particular Coen's movie is a chain-gang song, so it's an accapella punctutated by rythmic pickaxe strikes upon rock.

"Well the high sheriff... *pick* ...told his deputy... *pick* ...want you to go out... *pick* ... and bring me Lazarus.... *pick*"

And on and on.  You just end up taking small chugs every few seconds :D

Yeah, dead simple, but who has that kind of endurance? I mean, even strong men sometime cry when they have to drink a hundred, maybe more, beers in such a short time. Can't we just split this modest task in more manageable ones? I'm a big player as regards beer, but I'm not that kind of champion.  ;D

Stand over here, brother, this is the wimpy area for gentle folk who don't do the harshities of life.  No running, jumping or climbing trees, no chugging, rucking or fighting... just nice, quiet, sitting and gentle, good-natured living for us.

I once even tried to strart a cowards union as a bit of a joke.

Wimp and proud since 1981! (I couldn't even take that first smack from the midwife!!) ;D

Poker, Golf, Frisbee, Billiards/Snooker (Don't find it great personally but still a dudely game), Darts, People watching at a mall or what have you(If thats even a sport, you can make it into one though :D)

Infact, just anything that requires little effort and can be done while drinking. ;D

I have to admit that the sports that I still engage in aren't very Dudely.
I'd say riding a motorcycle on face value is pretty Dudely but looking most closely at the hard core lovers of motorcycles I guess that would be pretty difficult to support. Decidedly Un-Dude.

As for myself I still hunt and fish and on occasion hike.
Hiking is a bit Dudely I guess.

just watched "riding giants" on bbc4 last night, an excellent movie on big wave riding. Think the effort required for this extreme end of the sport makes it undudely but the buzz you get dropping into a big wave just blows the mind ... granted its usually relief of getting out the other end alive ;)

I know this might sound bad as many un-dudely play golf but I find it very relaxing and super fun when you skip holes and just drive the golf carts around the back trails at higher speeds. I love bowling during the winter when its cold and snowing but golf can be good if with the right people. A nice shot feels as good as a turkey, a difficult putt is like that pesky spare.

I dig the nature aspect of it which might seem strange as its manicured ground but the local flora and fauna take to it well. Many animals thrive in golf course areas and without them in some urban locations there would be no place for foxes to hunt rabbits or places for waterfowl to have babies and fish. Almost every morning I would see a fox hiking back to his home in the local golf course after an early morning rabbit hunting at the local park. I live in a suburb 10 minutes outside of chicago where there would be not place for that if it where not for the golf course.

A more dudely version is the frisbee golf but I prefer the regular even though the frisbee golf is definitely more dudely and has a very dudely type person following.

I find cornhole (bean bag toss, baggo, or bags, according to Wikipedia) to be one of the Dudeliest of all sports.  It's practically outdoor bowling, and there are some who insist that an open container of oat soda in a player's non-throwing hand provides the balance needed for a quality toss.

Poker is always fun, if you  consider that a sport.

Basically for me any sport can be a dudely sport, so long as its leisurely and fun, without too much emphasis on competitiveness. I remember many a primary-school football match essentially devolve into multiple Walters vs. Smokeys, with myself standing on the sidelines shakin' my head trying to remind them that it was just a fuckin' game.

When Im not playing Parchees or werstling alligators I often surf. I am often at my most profound moments when shreddin' a gnarly wave.  ;D

Pool for sure.
Generally played at a bar.

I've always found Curling to be weirdly Dudely.
That pregnant moment when they just release the stone.

What a stupid question? Now there are a lot of sports. Not all of them I can call my favorites, despite the fact that I really love sports. Now I bet on sports, and most often it's hockey or football. I especially love football, so I found a site for bettors (https://www.dimers.com/bet-hub/nfl/schedule) to keep up to date with all sports matches and news in order to make successful bets.

Well, you can try tennis. It is also a very nice sport. In fact, I also place my bets on Tennis on this site (https://www.sportstips.com/tennis/). At this bookmaker, you can bet on different sports and win money. Also, there's an opportunity to get a bonus such like sign up bonus and no deposit bonus. This is cool right? Thank me later!

Not in the movie. No. Can we speculate? Yes. My opinion is that Dude would like golf but he would do it barefoot and with a beverage. The problem is paying for it because of how "business elite" its become.

Can't do it with a beverage, though.

Being newly ordained so my thoughts may lack some substance.

When I read the title I first thought of pool. Almost the entirety of the game is outside of your control or influence. You can control your posture, chalking, strategy and the like but once contact is made all control is forfeit. The result is an interaction between your aims and chaotic reality over which you have no influence and no choice but to abide.
It is also possible this is a reflection on my skiills.
