All of us at some point of time or another realize that there is a Dude inside all of us and begin to abide by it. But that is not the most difficult part.
The real tough part is to CONTINUE to stay Dude. Or in other words, how do we maintain a Dudely way of life? It is so damn easy to get sucked into this world of hypocrisy, judgment and worries and forget how to 'take it easy'. And not being able to find fellow Dudes around me is not really helping matters.
So, I ask all fellow Dudeists here, how do YOU STAY DUDE?

Well dude, sometimes it ain't easy maintaining but just ask yourself What Would The Dude Do, then try to calm down, do no harm and abide.

Lately, I've been trying to give myself time to sit and do nothing every day, maybe multiple times throughout the day, watching the world go by (or not) and letting thoughts come as they may without dwelling on them and without feeling like I'm somehow obligated to think, to plan, or to worry. I feel better afterward--a little more in touch with myself, a little more at ease in the world.
Don't know if that helps. I know what you mean about undudely influences. It's hard to not get sucked into that kind of stuff.
Coming here was a good step in that direction man. This place reeks of Dudely wisdom, be patient with your self, you are on your way.

Watching The Big Lebowski once a while kinda reminds me of the Dude in me. But then I go out and I find I dont have anyone to go bowling with. And that sucks.
Bowling is one thing that really reminds me of being Dude. Need to find a bowling partner now.

That was some revealing shit man. Fuck. Might even put that as a quote on my table.
Some dudely things that I keep in mind (emphasis on the "I", because not everything works for everyone) are eating well and putting myself in other peoples places. Like if someone is pissed off or is being un dude, I imagine what it's like for me when I'm in that situation.
So when I get to that level of un-dude, it's easier to imagine myself being the 'dude in me' watching how well I perform under that level of stress/bullshit. I see improvements all the time.
Relaxing things? Routine helps, having a steady job and a place to go that's away from home, and a home to go as a place to stay. 9-ball is extremely fun when you can't afford bowling.
Ever try working out? Exercise is very dudely. Probably the most dudeist thing you can do in my opinion is take care of yourself, your body being the zenith of that concept. The body is the vessel for the mind and spirit, it needs to be strong and healthy if you are to perform at your peak dudeliness.
This is all simple stuff, but again, fresh perspective and a place like this forum really help center you, having that reminder of common sense when it's presented from others helps blend your own intuition about these things and make it a core belief structure, instead of just a passing expermientation in our short lives.
It's good to have other dudes in the struggle for finding who you are. One for all, and all for one, or so the saying goes.

You do not need a partner to bowl dude. It can be very calming; sort of Zen like, to roll on your own. When you roll by yourself you are not competing against anyone...just yourself.
Speaking of exercise, what are some exercises other dudeists enjoy?
I used to feel peer pressure to run from my compeers but i never have fun doing it and the more I think about the more undude it seems...what are running from and where are we going...seems like running a marmot wheel, man.
Of course running may be necessary if one is being chased by scissor wielding nihilists or sprinting down a beach community highway.
To me, the most dude exercises are those which incorporate social and physical interaction: basketball, tennis, ultimate frisbee, kickball (yes, kickball), etc. And nature based shit seems to keep the undude side away...hiking, trail walking etc.
I suppose water aerobics and swimming may be helpful in case one is confronted by an amphibious rodent.
I used to get all frantic about the need to exercise since the fitness craze has overtaken the parlance of our time.
But I started noticing how my elderly father behaves..he is dude and doesnt know it (which makes him very dude). I have never seen the man run (although he was in WWII so I'm sure he had to run some when it was time to take that hill). But his preferred exercise nomenclature has always been working on his farm and taking walks...
So I guess I tend to go through strikes and gutters in my thinking about exercise...i plan to return to tai chi but i dont see myself down at the local gym lifting weights (doesnt take much muscle to operate a mouse or mix a cocktail)
Do any of you find picking the right exercise ever bit as stupefying as I do sometimes?
I think you start by not worrying about it.
Being Dude is not frontal lobe.
You need to start by adhering to a pretty strict,
uh, drug regimen to keep my mind, you know, limber.
Eventually you commit it to sense memory and go with the flow.

Well dude...since I quit smoking back in July of 09 I gained like 25 pounds. Figured I needed a bit more exercise than bowling once a week. So this year I joined a second league and now bowl at least twice a week. It has done wonders! Think I just may have lost a pound this year...maybe not. ;D
My problem is i'm 40 and most of my compeers are into "cheat mortality by running from it" mentality..running marathons and what-not..i figure that will only end in sore feet and shattered knees. Many 40somethings are not willing to return to fun stuff like bowling, basketball, etc.
Maybe i need to find some other compeers.
I tried the biking thing--good for the heart, bad for the knees. I tried the running thing (actually, fast-walking)--good for the heart, bad for the knees. Best aerobic workout would be swimming, but I hate chlorine and I don't live by a beach. If I had a spring-fed pond in my back yard, that would be perfect. I'd do a couple of laps when I felt like it, then chill in privacy.
I've thought about doing stuff that's fun in order to exercise, but haven't taken it to the next step. I worked with weights for a year or two, then stopped because I didn't have a work-out buddy any more. I think that's probably the best scenario for me--having someone around to play raquetball with, or whatever.
I've mentioned it in other threads, but I mainly do brazilian jiu jitsu as my exercise. It's very Dude. You go with the flow, and you get to spend most of the time laying on the ground.

I watched the documentary here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVCKEbiEJNc. Cool! It made it look fairly tame because it was instructional, but from the little I saw of other documentaries, I see that it can get real intense.
Looks like exercise and taking care of one's body in general helps people keep the Dudeness in them alive and kicking. And I tend to agree with this idea. But question I have is: Do you need to have another Dude with you through all these activities or does it work as effectively when done by oneself?
I for one, like photography. I almost get an orgasm every time I realize i have got a superb shot. It makes me feel very Dude.

Dude. You got it spot on man. I do that shit all the time. And during the few times I get into situations where someone's pissed on my rug, or some undudely thing happening in general, I feel very happy with myself with the way I respond in a Dudely manner. Makes me feel that I am slowly getting the hang of being Dude.

since i got our rescue dog, lebowski, i started walking her a 2 miles 'hike' in our neighborhgood hills, gets my heart pumping, not too long or too fast to hurt the ol' knees and its very dude, we stop and watch gophers and shit like that.

For maintaining dudeness and fitness, I like Qigong. It's a little like Tai Chi, and a little like yoga, with lots of deep breathing and relaxation. It's a workout, a meditation, and a great way to stay Dudely.

In some way I have always been a Dude because I am doing things much slower than people around me. Kind of reversed ADHD, not sure what the exact cause is, neurological stuff or something else. The trouble is everybody wants me to speed up and do multitasking. Heck, when I am making some tea, I am making some tea. I guess my task is to stop feeling guilty because of that.
