Actually watching the film I think the proportions the Dude uses are:

Ice (about four pieces),

50% Vodka (up to half way Up the glass),

25% Kahlua (three quarters of the way up the glass),

Finally top up with Half and half.

Isn't that just when he's offered someone else's bar to help himself to? :)

I'm fairly sure he mixes them the same at home (which he does once or twice).

In Duderonomy, Book 1 it is stated that "Ideally half-and-half shall be used in preparing the sacramental beverage. Failing this, milk, and under the most dire of circumstances, non-dairy creamer."

In the film, I think, all these are used and similar non-standard recipe prevails on what alcohols are used. The Dude doesn't really mind - and neither should we.

That having been said, lets keep them perfect recipes coming:

Mine is pretty close what already stated here(actually exactly)
1/2 vodka(I prefer Russian Standard, but anything goes)
1/4 Kahlua
1/4 half-and-half,
enough ice that it wont melt too fast

I would not be hasty to take digitalbuddha's advice to head to bar though, I've had lots of difficulty to get bartenders make it as short as I'd like to. Just like pointed out by meekon5, it's at least 3/4 liquor and just a splash of creamer(be if half-and-half or milk) else all you really taste is milk. Or is that just local 'style' to make it loooong here in Finland?

Oh right, and I'm a newbie here too. Not new to Dudeism though and hopefully not too much out of my element.

I dunno about all that 'special maine ice', organic milk, and no vodka business...doesn't suit my inner dude, but at least it's an ethos.

i'll just stick to my oat sodas. lotta good recipes here tho dudes.

I think I'll try non-dairy creamer version next time I get the opportunity.

that would be:
3/4 vodka
1/4 Kahlua
non-dairy creamer(powder),
ice

I don't know if I can conjure up "the most dire of circumstances", but it'll count as preparing for those hard times when nothing else is available.

Don't do the powder dude. I gave it a try and all it did was clump up and make a mess. Maybe if you dissolve it first, but adding the powder to cold Kahlua and vodka just doesn't mix. 8)

May not be Dudely but...

Bourbon Whiskey Neat on ice.

Doesn't get any simpler or better. Especially if accompanied by a fine cigar and a nice comfortable chair and a camp fire.

I suppose I gotta see the film again, 'cause I'm pretty sure there's no problem when the Dude does it. Perhaps it's the attitude?

Temperature might play large role in it though, it's same with cocoa milk powder - mix it in cold water and it lumps up, but try same in warm water and no problem. The Dude does mix his beverage from bar so all but the ice is room temperature, perhaps that's enough.

I'll report the results here if I get to it.

Gotta agree on that, nothing beats good cigar and soothing yet manly surroundings, no matter what the preferred beverage is.

And Fucking 'A it's dudely. It might not be the sacramental beverage, but just chill out man. The Dude Abides.
