Former singer of punk band X Ray Spex, Poly Styrene has died after suffering from spine and breast cancer, aged 53.

"The singer?s official twitter stated:

?We can confirm that the beautiful Poly Styrene, who has been a true fighter, won her battle on Monday evening to go to higher places.?

Among their best known songs Oh Bondage, Up Yours! X Ray Spex formed in 1976 after seeing the Sex Pistols perform. The band released one album, the hugely influential Germ Free Adolescents in 1978 and were known for their rebellious attitude and sense of fun.

Real name Marianne Elliot-Said, the singer went on to record a more subtle and subdued solo album, Translucence, in 1980, before retreating from the music industry to join the Hare Krishnas.

Our condolences go out to Styrene?s friends and family."

I didn't know she was ill - thanks for the fun and music, Pol and, above all, the attitude. RIP Dude.

Yes, it is sad indeed. Germ Free Adolescents remains one of my favorite albums to this day. She was making a comeback as well, and was just about to release an album. There are already a couple of the songs from it being played out there. It's different, but not bad. I hope the can release the whole thing.

I loved the day the world turned dayglow.....a pink anthem for my time and place in those days. Dudely blessings to her and her family. Much love.
