Title: Any gamer Dudes?
Post by: Rev. Gary (revgms) on February 19, 2011, 11:34:09 AM
I do a little gaming, casual, right now I am on Warhammer Online.

Anybody else here a gamer?

There is some talk and research going on that is saying there are positive personal and social benefits to gaming.

Yeah, I currently playing Black Ops on PC, but I am looking forward to Homefront, Brink, and Red Orchestra.

I would go with that research. I know quite a few people I would not have met normally and I keep regular contact with them.

Xbox and PC (wont touch Wii, don't like PS3)

Fallout New Vegas (http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout:_New_Vegas) is my game of choice at the moment.

Klaus, his son, and I, Play Black Ops (http://www.callofduty.com/hub) most weekends at the moment (downloaded the First Strike DLC maps as soon as they came out).

I am really looking forward to Shogun 2 Total War (http://www.totalwar.com/shogun2) (Probably going for the collectors edition (http://hmv.com/hmvweb/displayProductDetails.do?ctx=280;-1;-1;-1;-1&sku=541502), but not the chessboard version (http://www.game.co.uk/Games/PC-Games-and-Downloads/Strategy-Real-Time/Total-War-Shogun-2-Limited-Edition-with-Exclusive-Chess-Set/~r353347/?s=SHOGUN+2+CHESS)) next month, and Skyrim (http://www.elderscrolls.com/?country=en-GB) (out 11/11/11), and also finally Brink (http://www.brinkthegame.com/) (which I'm hoping will  be as huge as the hype suggests it will, and not another Shadow Run).

So no not really a gamer at all.

Gamer Tag is same as here "meekon5 (http://www.google.co.uk/search?client=opera&rls=en&q=meekon5&sourceid=opera&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&channel=suggest)" (my nom-de-web is consistent blogging, gaming, forums, as far as I can make it).

Forgot Metro 2033 (http://www.metro2033game.com/en) on pc, and Civ V (http://www.civilization5.com/) (which I'm not convinced is as good as Civ III).

Dad was in IT from the time I was Ten, we had the original Pong game, Atari Console, and I did a bit on ZX81, until I found the original Elite (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elite_(video_game)), on PC (Pirate Copy) have never looked back since.

I had original pong too, the one you had to tape shit onto your TV.

I miss the days of using a HEX editor to hack the save files of Elite so you had the best guns and loads of money.

It was the most interesting part of the game for me because all the values were hidden in matched pairs in the registry of the save file. Play it, save it, hack the file to see what had changed and by how much.

Ahh those were the days.

Hello there!
I'm a gamer too. Not as much as in the past, obviously (I think I've said it few times, but it won't hurt to do it again - feeding the monkey sucks, man!).
Fallout New Vegas is my next game - so far I've been waiting for the price to come down, I just checked (thanks for reminding, Meekon!) and it's down from ~?40 to ~?15, so I think I'll go for it. I loved first two parts and Fallout 3 is simply great.

Apart from that there's my absolutely no.1 game ever - Europa Universalis (at the moment it's EU3 with Napoleon's Ambition, In Nomine, Heir to the Throne and Divine Wind add-ons). Yes, they're taking the piss with the number of them, but since they're relatively cheap and make the game better I don't mind.
Also, recently I found few nice free titles based on older games I used to play, but now they're simply too old to go back to. So, there's FreeCIV - Civilization clone, Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe (ehm, Transport Tycoon Deluxe clone :) ), UFO: Alien Invasion - UFO: Enemy Unknown clone, and Widelands - Settlers 2 clone. They're all made by fans, so they may lack fancy graphics, but the gameplay is what counts there. And they all have Linux versions :)

@Meekon5: Yes, editing save games... That takes me back. Common practice back on my Amiga 600 days. I never played Elite, but spent hours (days or weeks more like) playing Frontier.

Little brother had a Atari machine I had loads of fun with Powermonger (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powermonger) and the likes on that.

I'm playing X3 Terran Conflict (http://www.egosoft.com/games/x3tc/info_en.php) to feed my Elite cravings now.

Sorry for the size of image there but thats what it looks like.

I got pissed off (US=pissed) with Eve Online because I'm a big trader and don't see the logic in cargo ships not being allowed big guns (bloody PvP-ers). If I'm a trader in a dangerous place I would have the biggest bloody gun I could find.

simutrans (http://www.simutrans.com/) with the British PAK is a good free transport sim that runs off my usb drive on any windoze machine.

I'm a huge gamer.

Almost sad how many hours of passed playing video games, when I could have been doing more productive things.

But, honestly It's very relaxing while simultaneously being exciting and way to get together with people.

I've also had my eyes opened and thoughts provoked through games many times.
Games like Assasins Creed, or Bio Shock. There are a lot of older ones that helped shapped my moral views and gave me a place to be, when I wasn't somewhere else.

I was born in 84,  so I was basically doomed to love video games. My father had an atari, and my brother had nintendo. I took it from there.

I love FPS and definately Fall Out is by far my favorite modern RPG experience, although I went through vegas very quickly.

I do Black Ops too, on 360.

whitebox7 is my gamertag

never got into warcraft, too much time and money on one game for me. I play through em, and trade.

Did a bit of PC gaming back in the early 00's , but mostly Counter Strike and Half Life.

I love space fighter simulators too.

I gotta stop talking about this because I could start to sound obsessed. I'll be playing games until they take them away.

Real quick, I'm pretty sure the DUDE is not a gamer.

He likes to listen to audio tapes of bowling highlights, and mimic the action, which leads me to suspect HE WOULD enjoy
a great bowling sim like,  Ten Pin Alley (playstation 1997?)

I find I have to run both PC and Xbox to get a good coverage of games. I was a die hard PC gamer for a long time but finally converted to the riginal Xbox a few years ago.

I don't really like civ on Xbox (if the game doesn't take a week to play it's just not civ).

Shogun 2 total war is PC only. i like the resource management games. but have always held the theory that you buy games in line with what you played as a kid (for my generation any way).

For instance I was a big table top war gamer so love the Total war series. Spent a lot of time playing with railways (Hornby) so like a few of my railway sims. Adore resource management games where you lose about a week every time you turn them on. Was also a big Sci-Fi fan so anything that gets me close to that (Halo, X3, Eve online). FPS is just any wargamers joy but also links back to Action Man (http://www.actionmanhq.co.uk/frameset/frameset.html) (probably GI Joe (http://www.gijoetoys.com/) in the US). Finally I was, and still am a big roleplay enthusiast so any RPG, but as I said before looking forward to Skyrim (11/11/11 a date no one can get wrong).

Unfortunately where I actually played with Action Man and had to use my imagination to fill in the enemies (until I had two) and the scenery etc modern kids have all that work done for them so (i believe) are actually less imaginative as a result (not having had to really stretch their imagination)

I too am a gamer.  I won't go into my long history or current events on PC or Xbox, but I will say a bit about gaming and Dudeism.

I think gaming can be twofold.

First off, gaming is supposed to be a relaxing, leisurely persuit.  What's more, in today's online age, it can be very social now, even more so than when we had two people on two pads in two ports.  Now we have 4-player set-ups in the same room, either split screen or co-op (Ahhhh, Rock Band... strum strum click)

If you get get into a grove and chill with a good game, be it an engrossing story, stunning graphics, immersive gameplay or a mellowing soundtrack, you can tune into your Dudeist nature through such activities with ease.  I mean, it's all about kicking back.  I know that when I had a more stressful, 9-5 job, I used to long to go home and "kill stuff".  I'd get home and head into a world of hack and slash to ease out my stresses with fictional violence on pixelated victims.  Not a dudely activity in itself, but we know it's a fiction, so it's hardly being a rug-pisser to lop off an e-goblin's head with an ornate e-battleaxe.

Conversely, the second point can be that games, if you get too involved, can be stressful.  I'm sure we've all had gamer rage, whereby the frustrations of our failure (Damn it, why can't I reach that f*ckin platform????) take us into a less than mellow state.  Especially in certain PvP type affairs, when some paraquat who's mastered the game to a godlike level enjoys trouncing you with ease to get his jollies.  That's the indignancy of injustice, right there, man!

Of course, using the Dudeist ethos, as soon as I feel the red mist of frustration approach, nowadays, I laugh it of as something that's merely ridiculous, rather than maddeningly unfair.   So before I get a chance to stress, I find the joke and suddenly, I'm Dude again.

And anythough I'm not much one for online Xbox gaming, I do enjoy knowing what my friends and playing, checking out amusing avatars and seeing what interesting achievements people have culminated.  My gamer tag is TwoBands.

My Dad was a very mean man; he told me that he's bought me an Action Man for my birthday but when I opened the box it was empty. I asked "What gives?" and he said "He was a deserter". Very mean man.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Yer darn straight I did, Dude - gotta keep this golden stuff alive, man - innderdude it to the next generation. For American Dudes substitute Action Man for GI Joe.

I have never been into electronic games, as such; used to play (and paint the miniatures) Warhammer 40K with a friend: that Dude spent an awful lot of money on paraphernalia but was tragically unlucky with Dice. Don't think he ever won.

I've hit a point in Fallout NV that means I may have to start again. After seventy odd hours I reached one of those moments when a character asked "Are you sure you want to do this?"

Now having played Fallout 3 I should have learnt that when they ask that your going towards the end game.

So here I am in a situation where I can't defeat a group of people and I can't "Fast Travel" out, and I can't walk away.

I can't win, I can't retreat , and I can't go back to a previous save.

BUM!

I just can't beat Legate Lanius, and have no save previous to getting to the Dam. I've turned up too early with too few weapons and too little support.

Well, I'm sure you've tried it all, but I had the same problem, and what I did was simply cheat the system. If you have a lot of meds and drugs, USE THEM ALL, attack and disable his legs and/or his sword (it's not worth keeping anyway trust me), use every action point you can, while constantly walking backwards towards the camp, try and find a way to have him stuck on the ground while your high above him. If you strip down to a light armor if you have one in inventory this might help. You can go back and forth between them, don't forget. Also, remember to change any ammo you have to higher grade.

Heh, New Vegas is cool as hell.  I love the music and shit... I keep intending to play through again all evil and stuff, but ... I just get so annoyed at the douchebag Legion slavers (I mean, they're SLAVERS! C'mon!!) and their fucking old-style "Awe Kaesar" pronunciation of the Latin.  Oh, and, can I just say, Dave Foley? Perfect choice for Yes Man ;)

Lately, though, I've been completely junked out on this game called MAG, on the PS3.  It's a FPS with a little RPG (mostly with the levels and skill kind of stuff) that's online-only, and fucking huge!  The biggest mode is 128 v 128.
It's funny; the game has a LOT of nagging little problems (hard freezes, iffy support from the dev) but, it's free to play on PS network, and, I swear, it's like they put heroin in it, despite the fact that that  makes no sense.

Someone mentioned "BRINK."  .. I started looking at that a little bit ago.  Looks promising, I think I'd like it, but my entertainment budget is nil for the foreseeable future, so :/

Yeh when they annoyed me I accidentally killed a few so they attack me on sight (even send death squads after me).

I am really looking forward to Skyrim (check out this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=c9eGtyqz4gY)), which allegedly is the combination of everything they have learnt from Oblivion and the Fallout games.

Once upon a time I played first person shooters online a LOT.
The Original Quake (greatest game ever) and the sequels.
Unreal games also.

Then we had kids and I was glad to sleep once in a while.
Never got back to it but I know what a demanding mistress gaming can be.

Now is the Hardcore Gamer or Hardcore PS3 Gamer?

And what do you mean?

I ask this because Xbox Live has always had a group for the profiles "Professional Gamer", which the godson from hell has always listed himself as, from the age of twelve. So of course Ive taken the piss and explained to him that he and all his little mates listing themselves as such doesn't actually make them "Professional" until they are actually earning money at the thing.

Also I play a lot of games (both PC and Xbox) in fact a large amount of my spare time is spent gaming, i still only list myself as "Recreational".

I say hardcore ps3 because it's all that I play. Just about every day. I have almost 2000 trophies. I don't own any xbox and I don't use pc for gaming because I don't like having to spend hundreds to upgrade my graphic and sound cards every time a new game comes out.

I say hardcore not as being in a group or anything, just because I am dedicated to PS3 all the way. PS3 Fanboy I guess.

I didn't mean anything by it I just like pulling my godsons leg because he gets so serious about it.

Had a feeling you meant exclusive ps3 fanboy.

Spend half my free time with films and half with gaming, and half with alcohol.

Note to all children gaming and alcohol can lead to very antisocial behaviour (drunken shouting at the TV etc) so don't do it at home without a responsible adult present.

Drunken Gaming! LOL. I honestly find I play much better when I'm smashed. I guess it's because the game is the center of my universe at that moment. It's like I'm totally inside the game man. Same with movies. I seem to have a focus for detail in everything that's happening in that film. Now of course I can have an ax murderer standing right behind me and never know it. Not a good thing.

That's right, I just resurrected a dead thread.

I just wanted to talk about a couple of games I am looking forward to the most. Next month Deus Ex: Human Revolution comes out (I am looking forward to this one the most). What got me to post was this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ui9fyvtWVcs&feature=feedu it fills in some back story that leads up to the game.

The other game I am looking forward to is Battlefield 3. Huge maps, 32 players vs. 32 players, and jet fighters should make it that much more interesting. There were some screenshots leaked and they look amazing http://blog.machinima.com/insidegaming/2011/07/18/battlefield-3-multiplayer-screens-details-leak-from-alpha/

That's right dude!

Nowdays I'm playing with friends Marvel vs Capcom 3, a nice & funny game to spend time with the folks.
And I think I'm going to play again Batman: Arkham Asylum, what a great game dude!

Back to Civ 3 for me. a classic and a life stealer, I've got 4 and 5 but I have just gone back to my favourite version.

Playing a bit of Brink as well (a bit of a disappointment that one).

Modern warfare 2, still takes a bit of my time

Godson from hell and myself just released our first map on Halo Reach.

Have to agree with Landshark, Deus ex is a big want, battlefield 3 just to get away from tiny little maps and two second sporning to death games.

The big one at the moment has to be Skyrim (11.11.11):

As for me (as a female) I seem to like the more RPG and also sandbox format games.

I liked Fallout 3, but really enjoyed New Vegas. I've played Oblivion, waiting for Skyrim like crazy. That month is going to be crazy because me and my fiance are waiting for Diablo 3, Uncharted 3, and Skyrim. It's going to be nuts around this house.

Right now I'm playing some older games (like PSX era, including FF7--I replay it every so often, Wild Arms, Suikoden II, Parasite Eve). When a friend of mine comes over we play Little Big Planet on the PS3 (I have the sequel as well).

I got pretty sucked into Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney on my DS the other day, and I finished it, so I guess it's on to the sequel.

I played the first one after a friend recommended it to me. I didn't think I would like it. I've never been so wrong about anything in my entire life. The rush I got from finally nailing someone with the right evidence was better than any rush I've gotten from any other game. I'm so happy they put Wright in UMvC3!
