Title: The Book of Dudeku / The Dudeku Book / Dudeism Annual
Post by: cakebelly on January 09, 2011, 06:15:25 PM
Firstly, thanks to CC for sorting out the  new board for us - the reason the heading has an identity crisis going on is because we haven't officially decided what to call the project, yet. That doesn't matter - what matters to us is that as many Dudes as possible make a creative contribution. You can sling haiku, prose, poetry, lyrics, jokes, stories, artwork (or just contribute ideas), photos of yourselves, your tattoos - what-have-you. Eventually, we hope, to put it all in a book (to raise cash for  - we don't know yet; a Dude project or KIVA, we'll see and consult). The layout - direction - of the book will take shape as we go along. Maybe it will become "The Dudeku Book" - only you can decide by limbering up and Dudekuing down. I am sure I'll have to come back and edit this (nothing is gospel, here). Anyway, Uber Dude and myself will be happy with any contribution you make. I'll leave the floor open for Uber who, I am sure, would like to clarify the fuck outta all the crap I just typed. Let's fuckin' do this Dudes - c'mon, let's roll. Please look at the other threads on this board for other ideas on contributions (or add a thread yourself).

I guess we'll keep this page (thread) for haiku and Dudeku

Since the thread idea started in the Haiku thread, I wanted my first contribution to be a Haiku.  I do notice that there was some discussion about having anything about the "the dude" as a character.  I could totally modify that to be about dudeism instead of the dude.

Lets get one thing out of the way though, is Dudeism 2 or 3 syllables?  I could see it Dude-ism  or dude-is-m

No need to modify - unless you want to fool around with the same haiku and post it again, that's cool. I've been getting along by thinking it's 2 syllables. Discovered this site yesterday (think its meant for kids, but so what); if in doubt try it out: http://www.howmanysyllables.com/words/where.html (http://www.howmanysyllables.com/words/where.html). Dude is 1 syllable and 'Dudeism' is not officially a word, as such, so we can do what we like with it.

I thought it was 3 but, hey, this is LIKE 'nam.  There are no rules.  Glad to see all interested parties.  Please chime in if you have a topic heading as we will eventually break this up in to subheading and, if it becomes a book, chapters.  Great work everyone.  Let's throw some rocks!!!

All dudes come to roll...

Here's my work from the starter thread:

Okay, here's one of my haikus.  I call it Hai-Oooo....that hurt!

Hit my funny bone
What idiot named it that?
Ouch! That fucking hurt!

Then there's Hai-Fu

I wrote this haiku
Just so I could say Kung Fu
So...What's it to YOU?

Hai-Brew

Home from work at last
crack open an ice cold beer
Ahh, much better now

(This is an old one...from when I was among the employed)

I'm Duderino
If you're into brevity
You can call me Dude

Haiku fever abounds
I fear I started a plague
Caucasian could cure....

I am loving this
The world is full of Dude-ku
No need to thank me... ; )

Colbert Report here
The Uberdudes have eaten
Breakfast for Dinner.  : )

Hello there Caesar Dude
Greetings appreciated
So glad to be here

I found Dudeism
It feels like a family
So good to be home...

It is hard to stop
After you catch the fever
The Dude-kus roll out...

I have one black cat
one more cat that is orange
Linus and Tucker

Must stop haiku-ing
Have too much school work to do
STOP SUCKING ME IN!

Or just tell me to "Shut the fuck up, Donny!"

New shit's come to light
Cakebelly's name now makes sense
Eats cake...turns to shit

I will start posting some new stuff in the poetry section.

Here are mine from the earlier thread....do what you wish with them....

As some are replies to to other dudes...maybe they could be collated some way, otherwsise they don't make sense....just a thought.

Peace.

We are done bowling
sit on the rug meditate
Ignore nihilists

I am extremely proud
But let me not be too vain
Pride befalls the dude

The dude smokes the weed
the sacred herb that mellows
judge him not my friend

oat sodas taste good
but so too the caucasion
weed is the icing

The cops work in shifts
The nihilists killed my car
But I will abide

Will no one else play?
Does my haiku not inspire?
I am ashamed dudes.

I have been inspired
But the lack of responses
Have wearied my soul

I have been called tart
From someone who surely knows
Son of a baker!

In everything
I excel or die trying
I thank you my friend

The dude has a stash
The ringer is quite empty
Finishing my coffee

I have been remiss
Uberdude  let me say high (sic)
Always a pleasure

Greetings are easy
The forum's sometimes quiet
And I miss people

I am addicted
The curse has it's hold on me
Haiku on the bus

I have two black cats
They are my familiars
Luna and Willow

I like to drink beer
Smoke the occasional J
Caucasian to end

The filthy Haiku
Has me firmly in it's grasp
Will they arrest me

Cakebelly flatters
He writes Haiku for the dudes
Caesar Dude thanks him

Feeding the monkey
This dude is extremely tired
No time for Haiku

Alliterative 6 word memoir haiku:

Eventually;
Everything emotional,
Ends in emptiness.

Rhyming 6 word Memoir Haiku:

Unexpectedly;
However belatedly,
Love came gracefully.

Sorry, should have come back to this, sooner: some sources put 'ism' at 1 and others at 2 syllables (talking about net resources). I guess you should go with what ever feels right for your haiku (although, Uberdude is probably right with the 3 syllable take).

Sorry, should have come back to this, sooner: some sources put 'ism' at 1 and others at 2 syllables (talking about net resources). I guess you should go with what ever feels right for your haiku (although, Uberdude is probably right with the 3 syllable take).

For our inner Walters:

"In contrast to English verse typically characterized by meter, Japanese verse counts sound units known as "on" or morae. Traditional haiku consist of 17 on, in three phrases of five, seven, and five on, respectively. Among contemporary poems teikei (fixed form) haiku continue to use the 5-7-5 pattern while jiyuritsu (free form) haiku do not.[8] One of the examples below illustrates that even the traditional haiku masters were not always constrained by the 5-7-5 pattern.

"Although the word "on" is often translated as "syllable", in fact one on is counted for a short syllable, an additional one for an elongated vowel, diphthong, or doubled consonant, and one more for an "n" at the end of a syllable. Thus, the word "haibun", though counted as two syllables in English, is counted as four on in Japanese (ha-i-bu-n). This is illustrated by the Issa haiku below, which contains 17 on but only 15 syllables. In addition, some sounds, such as "kyo" (きょ) can be perceived as two syllables in English but is a single on in Japanese.

. . .

"Some translators of Japanese poetry have noted that about 12 syllables in English approximates the duration of 17 Japanese on.[12]"
