Was wondering what the tribe thinks that abiding means?
To me, abiding means that I hang in there and take life it comes. Not trying too much to make it come, or trying too much to stop it from coming. Just doing what life expects and take' er' easy for all the sinners out there, as the fella once said.
Abiding is going with the flow, or, if you want, going against the flow, but doing it with style, class and a bit of humility. Either way, not wanting to fuck with anyone.
Abiding means to agree to disagree if debating in a family restaurant over coffee, or smoking a righteous one with other dudes while you contemplate all the shit around you.
Abiding means its OK to be a fuck up sometimes, being a deadbeat, a loser, someone the square community won't give a shit about, but at the same time, winning the battle of life and sharing some of the spoils with your buds.
Fucking a, abiding comes natural to people, its all the madness that causes us to be undude, if we let it get to us, it ends up knocking us over the line and putting us in a world of pain while we end up unabiding. Fuck that, relax, abide, have a cold one and enjoy the semis. So, someone pisses on your rug, get over it, shit happens, just do what comes natural, stop by the old man's pad behind the gate, and grab a new rug to the tie the room together. On the way out, stop by the ole' cash machine and take care of business. Stopping of course to enjoy the scenery and a toe or two.
If the landlord comes around looking for the rent, offer him a j and let the dude know that you'll slip it under the door in a day or three. All in all, in good times or bad times, just say "fuck it, lets get us a lane and go bowling."
What does abiding mean? Fuck me, that's an easy one...when life tosses you a lemon (which sometimes it does), make it into lemonade and have a nice long refreshing long island iced tea, after that, its all good.
My point, Dude, is why should we settle for the twenty grand that a small minded life will bring, when we can keep the entire million that abiding will bring. Am I wrong? That way you can pass with a smile on yer face without feelin' like the good Lord gypped you.
Welp, that about does her, wraps her all up............Abide, dudes. Always abide.
I've always thought of abiding as "being cool." However, "being cool" can have a totally different meaning for everybody that reads this. When I think of "being cool" I think of lot of things described above. Things like taking it easy, keeping your cool, treating your fellow dude like you'd like to be treating, looking out for your pals and not letting them die face down in the muck, etc.
I don't know if I'd really condone stopping by the old man's place and helping myself to a rug, but some situations do warrant drastic measures.

1. To conform to; comply with: abide by the rules; had to abide by the judge's decision.
I've always considered to abide to be to obey. Specifically to obey the supreme being, whose will is often tough to grasp. This may be a little deep for dude philosophy, so if you are into the whole brevity thing, just think of abiding as to Abide by the Golden Rule, and do what you can to fight evil.
In dudeism, abide becomes some sort of eastern thing, so it can even be said that The Dude Abides by the Tao
Takin' her easy for all us sinners...
Fuckin a
abide- if you dont know what it means, then you probably dont abide.
two types of people in the world..
1) those who abide
and
2) those who listen to the eagles
and i hate the fucking eagles, man
But you can't hate Joe Walsh.
yes i can, and do.
i will not abide another eagles reunion, especially if its during league play
even away from the Eagles? "But seriously folks", james gang ..
So giving up instead of facing conflict is Dudeist? Well if Kevin is reading, I submit this:

No, i think he was right, but finally the fucking toe was a lie.
As if it's impossible to get some nail polish, apply it to someone else's toe.
I think it's interesting how everything the Dude does is based on his relationships with people and everything Walter does is based on money.
Yeah, that's why the Dude Abides. :)
From the book "I'm a Lebowski, you're a Lebowski" (The bible), Chapter one "I won't say hero, ´Cause what's a hero?.Pag.7
Abide:
1.To find somebody or something acceptable or bearable.
2. To endure or withstand /archiac)
3. To have the ability to say, "Fuck it.Let's go bowling"
to be able to forget about the fucking toe. But that's like, just my opinion, man

Thanks for writing this, Dude! That pretty much sums it up.
Abiding= enlightened hedonism.
1. Do no harm
2. Enjoy life!
I'm sorry I still can not accept "Do no harm" as an ethic to abiding.
I refer my learned colleagues to the scene from TBL in the car park where the Dude stands against the Nihilists and does a fair bit of harm.
It is a very nice idea and if everyone lives by it fine, but I still say when some fascist is trying to take what is yours, or trying to rape your Girlfriend/Sister/Wife/Mother, then some harm must be committed.
"Avoid doing harm to others at all cost" I can agree with.
or
"Harm only as a last resort"
When some ass wipe tried to mug me I stood my ground, alright he hit me with the knuckle duster he had been waving around and claiming "This is what I'm all about!". I'm not sure if I hit him but I walked away from the incident with my phone and all my money and cards etc.
Unfortunately I truly believe there will always be that type of human paraquat who will try to feed on what they see as the weaker individuals, and there will always come a line that once crossed demands action not leafleting.
All in my humble opinion of course.
(notice I have not even begun to go into the problems with "Do no harm" and the ex-wife attacking me with a serrated edged knife).
Actually I'm not even sure I agree with:
Quote from: Duddha on July 31, 2011, 08:45:23 AM
Abiding= enlightened hedonism.
Abiding is your own thing, if it works for you, do it.
Personally I count myself a bon vivant. I can be a bit of a hedonist, but don't see that as necessarily part of my Dudeism.
Do No Harm is not Pacifism dudes...not the way I look at it anyway. It's trying to live as harmless a life as you can...within reason. It's not good men doing nothing in the face of evil.
But of course...like Abiding...we leave the fundamentals to each to figure out for themselves. After all, it's your life dude, and no one has the right to tell you how to live it. All we asks is you consider how your actions effect everyone else.
From the http://donoharm.us web site:
"We believe that the first and most basic moral law is, "Do no harm." Because we can feel pain and suffering, we can imagine the pain and suffering of others, and we can act accordingly to minimize the harm we cause.
What does "do no harm" mean? Ultimately it means to give thoughtful consideration to our actions. ?Do no harm? simply means to consider how our actions may affect the world we all share, to be compassionate in our dealings with all creatures, and not to thoughtlessly despoil our planet."
I own a gun, and if the time ever arrives that I need to use it to defend my own from human paraquats I will not hesitate...I will not initiate violence...but I will defend myself and my family.
The whole purpose of the Do No Harm message is to help create a kinder and more compassionate world...one that I would like to live in. One we can all Abide in.
From http://youtu.be/q3Xy8YaJH5U
I have a wish.
I wish to live in a kinder and more compassionate world.
We can philosophize and meditate about what do no harm means, and delve ever
deeper into the essence of doing no harm, but the simple truth is, all that
philosophy and meditation, all that searching for the essence, means little
without a kind and compassionate world to practice in.
If we are to create a kinder and more compassionate world, our simple
message of "do no harm" must make its way into the hearts and minds of those who
need it the most - all 7 billion of us
I have many friends of all different religions, beliefs, backgrounds,
politics, social status and just about any other diversity you care to think of.
When we get together, we do so as friends, and we enjoy each others company in
spite of everything else. Yeah, we argue a bit, but we all respect each other
and our differences. In fact, I think it just may be our differences we
enjoy about each other most.
But one thing we all know; if one falls down, the rest will extend a helping
hand. If one is under duress, we all will come to their rescue.
We know and trust each other not to take advantage, or do any harm.
That is the kind of world we should and must have.
In that kind of world doing no harm is not a hard thing to do, it's not
something we even have to think about, it just comes naturally, in fact, in a world
of friends doing no harm is easy.
We need a world of 7 billion friends.
Thank you for being one of them!
well said cckeiser. I think that enjoying the pleasures life has to offer needs to be accompanied by an ethic of not harshing anyone elses buzz. Those two rules make up the tipsy two legged stool of enlightened hedonism, but can be a powerful metric. Having a jay on my porch brings pleasure and does no harm, but having a few caucasians and driving around does.

I believe that is why the Buddha is smiling. ;D
CC and Duddha yes it is a beautiful and worthy ethic, and I admire you both for trying to live life that way, but as usual (it being a favourite crusade of CC's) my point was missed.
I don't object to your ethic what I object to is the statement that was made:

For you yes, your abidance may be so, but for me no.
I am very happy for the pair of you in your "Do No Harm" ethic, go fourth and live your lives as shinning examples of this life style, I admire the fact that you share a dream of a better world, but much as I have problems with "prayer", and "evangelism", I also do not see "do no harm" as part of my abidance, and do not see any of these as essential to Dudeism.
I'm sorry no matter how many times you quote http://youtu.be/q3Xy8YaJH5U, you still have failed to convince me, as a credo it over simplifies the beauty and intricacy of life that includes both the yin and yang of violence and harm.
All you are doing here is evangelising a point of view that I have given due consideration to and find lacking.
Much like the Dudeist Christians, I have no problem with the Dudeist No Harmers, or Dudeist Enlightened Hedonists, but please stop trying to tell me what my abidance should be.
I abide as I abide, you abide as you abide.
I go against my own creed and finally say:
Abiding = Wu Wei
Do without doing, be without interfering. Abidance is taking the water course way.

CC you've been here long enough to know how I roll. ;D
I just object to the "This is the way it is" type statement.
I agree some people feel they should have an ethos, let them find one that fits.
I just worry that some people present their opinion of Dudeism as the only way.
When the joy of dudeism is it's personal.
We've each arrived here by our own personal paths.
My real answer to the question "What does it mean to abide?" is I can't tell you because to abide my way is unlikely to work for you.
I am always conscious that we the opinionated only represent a minority here, even as I type this the stats say:

Yep, thought better of it just a little after posting. Another time I should have said Fuck It and deleted the reply.
The Ethos then becomes: This may not be Nam...but There are No Fuckin' rules.
You Abide your way, and I'll Abide my way.
Fuck the Officials down at the League Office...They can Fuckin' Unpost it! ;D
Yeah, I like that. 8)
CC I prefer you actually post the reply.
Argument is not shouting at each other, slagging each other off. Argument is how I test the level of my belief in a point of view, through discussion and reasoned counterpoints.
For all I know my point of view could easily be wrong, if we don't discuss it here I could spend the rest of my life fooling myself.

Now that I like.
Dudeism for me has always been a religion of realisation (like Zen), one day I heard about this concept, liked it and was able to say that fits (most of) the way I feel about things.
Please don't ever "not post", remember this is a convivial discussion between friends down the pub not shouting match, as I said I could be entirely wrong in my point of view, but I won't know unless others state their points of view, and I am able to measure mine against that.

I am actually dyslexic, the best spell checker in the world is google, just paste the word that wont work for you in there.
For instance:
Quote from: Google
PASSIONETLY
And google says:
Showing results for PASSIONATELY. Search instead for PASSIONETLY.
The reason google is so good is it doesn't use the same way M$ Word (or the forum here) uses for spell checking which is an
heuristic algorithm (http://students.ceid.upatras.gr/~papagel/project/kef5_5.htm) based on rules preset by programmers, it uses statistics, it shows alternatives then gives you the statistically highest probability.
I love it.
Besides the Dude, to me Bruce Lee puts Abiding well in his famous quote ?Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless - like water. Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup, you put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle, you put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.?
To me this embodies the Abiding state.

After reading this thread (good one, too dudes...) what keeps rattling around in this nogin of mine are the words of the Stranger following Dude's acclamation of abiding: "It's good to know the dude is takin' er easy for all us sinners". "takin' er easy" is a basic proverb of dude like wisdom, IMHO. I don't think there is much argument that a dude would live longer and be healthier by takin' er easy. And I think a dude would have a better and more productive life by takin' er easy; even if a dude wanted to succeed at slacking.

At the risk of picking holes, if you see the Coen brothers interviewed on the subject of the religious aspects of TBL they are just perplexed and don't really understand. So to be more correct we imply the religious aspects they never had an intention for any of it to be interpreted on a religious basis.

Lately my favorite quote has been a Bruce Lee:
Notice that the stiffest tree is most easily cracked, while the bamboo or willow survives by bending with the wind.
Mark it eight dude...
I think it's going with the flow, yet standing up for what you believe in. Most of all, takin' 'er easy, man.
For me it's a couple things:
- Generally keeping a level head about things
- Taking life as it comes, not worrying too much about the 'big picture', or the future or the past.
- Knowing when to fold 'em
- Enjoying the simple pleasures in life instead of constantly striving for something big and grand
- Respecting people's opinions, espcially when I know I can't change 'em
- Knowing when to respond to something, and when to just ignore it

I don't know really but to contiune with the quotations: The best of man is like water,
Which benefits all things, and does not contend with them,
Which flows in places that others disdain,
Where it is in harmony with the Way. /Lao Tzu.
Then i agree with doing a bit of harm at times is justified.
One thing i'm curious about though. Is there a sort of dualistic relationship between the abiding dudeist and the square community?

Not exactly sure what you mean by "dualistic relationship", but if by "square" you mean "uptight", then there is indeed lots that dudeism has to say about that. Not that a dude holds grudges against squares, but that the "take it easy" ethos will pervade a dude's way of relating to others, square or not...
BTW welcome... grab an oat soda and pick a lane!
I mean that it a given that there is a diffrence between the dudely way of life and the way the square/uptight community lives. What im curious about is if there is some shared sorta destain between the two. Setting aside that the abiding ways of the dude always will prevail, what is the normal dude's view of the uptight community?
