Title: Vivian Maier (unknown) Photographer
Post by: cakebelly on January 07, 2011, 01:19:52 PM
Fascinating video about Vivian Maier: a recently discovered (now deceased) street photographer (huge cache of her work found in an attic); can't wait to see more of her work: http://www.b3ta.com/links/Photographer_Vivian_Maier (http://www.b3ta.com/links/Photographer_Vivian_Maier)

Have to say I think portraiture is a lot better when its done in black and white.

I can't recall being as captivated by a story/video - for a long time - as I was today with Vivian Maier's. Genuinely excited, too - imagine finding the stuff; very cool. Ms. Maier, apparently not seeking validation of her work just quietly lived for her art. What a Dude, Dudes.  8)

Her photographic style and technique showed discipline and control. In other words, she wasn't all over the map trying this or that latest fad. She seemed to stay focused on her art and shunned silly special effects or flashy gimmicks. She caught the reality of what was seen by her camera lens.

She, IMHO, wasn't after "perfection" as much as she was photographing realism. Though her technique could be said to be at a "professional level."

As you can see in this photo, there is an element of the unfocused, but she captured an interesting moment in time regardless...

Or this photograph where she captured something beyond the camera lens; a cold day in Chicago. Why a cold day? These women are standing in the sun light to warm up and I'll bet 100 to 1 she didn't ask them to pose or even plan the photograph. She just caught it as it was...

I'll bet that this women might very well go down in photographic history as one of the "accidentally discovered greats of the 20th century."

Right now, all seems to be quiet on the Dudeism front. Hopefully a "troll patrol" on the forum will help keep the lanes clear.
