Hi everybody,
actually I have just dropped in, so please forgive me if what I'm talking about is no longer an issue.
My point, uh, my question is: What is the stranger really saying in the bowling alley?
Is he saying: Sometimes you eat the bar which is how it sounds to me and what the English subtitles say he says and if so what could it mean...: "eating a bar"?
Or: Is he saying: Sometimes you eat the bear, and sometimes and so on, ... which is not what it sounds like, but what would make sense to me...and if so, why does he pronounce it like this?
Actually my mind has become rather uptight about this question, so if anybody knows what I'm blathering about, I'd be much obliged if anybody pooled resources.
Thankie
brother_erwin
Welcome, brother erwin, good to have you here - the answer to your question is 'bear' (but that's partly due to the fact that I couldn't think of anything funny to say about a 'bar' eating a Dude ;D).
I always took it that it was a euphamism for getting really drunk (eating the bar). After all I have fallen over in enough of them and landed on my face on them. (meekon5 UK Olympic face sliding champion 1984-date, so I started drinking late).
Much obliged for the quick responses, fellas! Much obliged.
It's Texas Twang for bear.
I heard "Sometimes you eat the bear, and sometimes the bear eats you." log before TBL.
But then I'm almost as old as the hills myself.
Actually I was watching the ending of the 1962 Mutiny on the Bounty, and I'm sure the narrator said something along the lines of "Sometimes you eat life, sometimes life eats you" just as the credits began to roll, now I could have been tripping but I can't find the footage online (for once) so can't prove this one way or the other.
Thankee, cckeiser, I think Texas twang settles the issue here.
And "A good day to you" from Germany, but keep writing, please ;)

Thanks, but not sure if congrats are in order here. It's not a job, I'm just helping the forumdude out.
I also help moderate 2 other dicussion boards and have the Do No Harm forum of my own on Yahoo.
Not that there is a whole lot to do on any of them.
In fact I just signed onto the PBA forum to talk about wahsam, dudeism and do no harm.
I guess I don't make a very good first impression! 8^)
But that's ok, I grow on people.

Actually, new shit has come to light.
I found "bear" being spelled "bar" in a poem by William Blake, namely in Auguries of Innocence, where the verse goes like this:
He who shall train the Horse to War
Shall never pass the Polar Bar

It's a great work in the spirit of the dude, so I recommend checking it out, if you don't know it yet.
Faithfully,
brother erwin
