Title: A worthy fucking commentary
Post by: DigitalBuddha on December 08, 2010, 12:17:58 AM
Thoughts on Universal Dudeism (ah fuck it, just thoughts on Dudeism. No reason to make it complicated).

** A worthy fucking commentary...............

........Take, for instance, the new religious movement known as Dudeism, or more formally, The Church of the Latter-Day Dude.  Based upon the teachings and example of the character Jeffrey Lebowski (played by Jeff Bridges) in the Coen Brothers? 1998 classic film, The Big Lebowski, Dudeism teaches a largely passive, hedonistic approach to life emphasizing personal authenticity and the cultivation of pleasures that can be enjoyed without engaging in exhaustive levels of work, competition, and anxieties about the future.  As one Dudeist website explains:

Life is short and complicated and nobody knows what to do about it. So don?t do anything about it. Just take it easy, man. Stop worrying so much whether you?ll make it into the finals. Kick back with some friends and some oat soda and whether you roll strikes or gutters, do your best to be true to yourself and others?that is to say, abide.?

The rest abides here - http://religionnerd.com/2010/11/10/the-religious-theft-of-sacred-culture/

** Footnote from DigitalBuddha: The dude in the video in the article starts out by saying that he "worships the Dude and the teachings of the Big Lebowski." It's just like my opinion, man, but I don't see Dudeism as worshiping the dude, or anything else for that matter.

Dudeism isn't about worshiping anything, it is (among other things) about abiding. Worshiping this dude or that dude or that thing or what have you creates false gods and is very undude IMHO.

Back to my oat soda.............

Yeah, I think you got it right, there, mang; worship was probably the wrong choice of word, there. To be fair, Duder was being filmed, was under pressure and, of course, was subject to edit. No worshiping for me thanks, don't think my knees could take it, anyway. (http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n262/cakebelly/37.gif) Nah, mang - too exhausting.

This pretty much sums up how I've felt my entire life, even before seeing The Big Lebowski for the first time.  One of my mother's personal motto's is "Don't sweat the small stuff" and that's something I've kept with me. However, I do think it can be applied to the big stuff as well. From this, I made my own motto which is simply "Don't sweat the stuff".  I like to live my life as stress free as possible, which is why I really dig Dudeism. To me, that's what it's all about, not stressing.

As far as the worshiping thing goes, I'm not too sure I abide that.

"worships the Dude and the teachings of the Big Lebowski."

Maybe what happens here is that it's easy to unconsciously take on the vibe of the general flow of language and thought. Like if someone says to you "what do you worship man?" you might get an answer like this, without that particular dude being into the whole worship vibe at all.

My guess would be he really meant something more like 'resonate with', 'dig', 'tune into' etc'.

I'm digging "tune into" and "resonate with".
